Picked up a Smith & Wesson Model 10-5 (Police & Military Special) with a 2" snub nose chambered in .38 Special today at the local Gun Show here in Indianapolis. The guy wanted $550 plus tax. Said he could do $500 cash out the door. I gave him $475 out the door. Minor wear... in excellent shape for being from the 1960s. All the others I've seen we're pretty beat up. Christmas present for my father. How'd I do? A few other booths had one, but they were all comparable price wise. One was a 10-3 for $375... covered in rust pits. Chose the best looking one.

Oh yeah!!! I got the M10-5 snubbie earlier in the year in really good shape for $500 out the door too. I wouldn't pay that much for a regular M10, but the snubbie...she's special.

Sounds like a nice deal to me. The short barrel models generally sell for more.

Yeah, I found a few 10s with longer barrels for around $250... in good shape around $300. I was specifically looking for the snub nose.

You did well, congrats!

The model 10 is one of my favorite S&W models, I have several of them. For snubbies I have a 10-5 round butt made in 1969 and a post war pre model 10 square butt made in the late 40's. No frills, these guns are strickly business and a pure joy to own and shoot.

Enjoy!

Very nice. Around here the K frames seem to be creeping up in price.

Is there a website that has a serial number look-up? The guy told me it was from the 60s, but don't know the specific year. I could always call customer service I suppose. Anyways, is there a website to look up build dates by serial number?

I am not familiar with a website however Supica's wonderful Standard Catalog Of Smith and Wesson has a great serial number reference in it. If you post the serial (or the first part of it) I am sure someone will let you know what the book suggests.

The 10-5 was in production from 1962-1977.

This should answer your question.

Post number 5. Look for the K frames, yours should be a C or D prefix. Or just post the number, I'll look it up for you.

Now you'd need a nice Milt Sparks Model PMK holster for it and you're set.

I love K frames.

About a year ago I stupidly passed up on a similar snubbie Model 10 for $400 and haven't seen one since near that price range.

They make a great range gun for when you need a break from the 442, 642 etc...

Nice

I walked away from one of those at a gunshow last year.
500 NIB. I still kick myself for passing. I really didn't need it as I have a snub nosed model 15.

Hey thanks! The serial number is D319465. The guy said it was from the 60s, but who knows if he really knew. It doesn't really matter to me, but I'd still like to know.

The book lists that serial from 1969-1970. Your serial number is high in that range so I would say 1970. It makes sense since the gun does not have the diamond magna grips that they quit making in 1968.

A Great Find. I have the same S/W M10 six shots....I love it...I'll never give it up. Enjoy your snub nose. I always take it to the range with the g19 and g20. I love using the speed loaders....

I had that exact same model 10 many years ago. While on a long trip, moving everything I owned and dirt poor, I traded it for a set of tires.

Wish I had it back.

If it's as good as it looks in the pic, I'd say you did pretty good!

Hard to go wrong with the K frames, especially a 2" like that one in such nice shape.
I have a SPD mod 10-5, worn finish and round butt, awesome shooter though.

It has some imperfections, but on older guns I don't mind. Kinda tells where the gun has been I guess. I just hope my dad likes it. After all, I bought it as a gift for him... but after shooting it, cleaning it, and toying with it for two days I really want one of my own. Maybe he'll give it back to me one day!

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. If I had two I'd give you one just so you could have it back... but you had to do what you had to do.

Surprisingly for a 2" barrel it's pretty dead on at HD range. I only shot one box of ammo through it. I didn't really do any long distance shooting with it either. Why only at HD range? It's a present for my father, he's 70, and that's all he'll use it for. Just wanted to make sure it fired well before I gave it to him. His birthday isn't until December so I have plenty of time to range shoot until then. I'll let you know how it groups at longer distances. I'll probably go sometime this week. Anybody recommend any ammo? I run Gold Dot JHP's through my Glocks... thought about picking up a box and seeing how they shot through this old buck.
