Some of the most beautiful 1911 grips I have seen are smooth. With that said, all of mine are rough textured, usually the typical diamond pattern.

I have not shot a 1911 without a rough textured grip (like VZ Grips)

Is it more difficult to keep a consistent grip with the smooth grips?

I have no use for smooth grips

Smooth grips on a bobbed J frame carried in your pocket will facilitate drawing although I put Hogue rubber back on mine, see;

Currently have VZ frag grips on a carry MA Classic Commander, aggressive but not painfully so, see;

If I were to have smooth grips on a 1911 would have to be ivory..not!

If you have a proper grip on your pistol then checkered or smooth, it doesn't make a difference. None of these guns are heavy recoil guns.

I just do not like smooth grips. Nothing to do with recoil.
The pistol could be a .22r or 10mm, I have no use for smooth grips.

If you want smooth grips, you better have a checkered front strap.

Smooth grips are nice looking on fancy looking pistols,

but for a shooter, I want textured grips.

(Hey Greg, does this look familiar?)

Looks a lot better than when I had it!

I prefer checkered grips for the 1911s that I shoot more than I carry.

Smooth grips are great for not tearing up clothing. I had smooth grips on my Baer TRS when I got it. They are not great for doing lots of shooting. Now I have Davidson Horned Lizards which have softened, but not lost their bite.

I've never had a problem with these:

Same here! Put skate board tape on the palm side, and finger grooves on my Glocks, and the best grips to date on my 1911's are the Simonich Gunners.

I will admit though, no rough texture, or, rubber, for pocket carry. Make that no rubber for any carry!

I really lie VZ grips & Larry Davidson's grips.
As for wood, only Esmeralda's checkered grips for me.
