What's the best friction tape for the front strap of a 1911 that is not checkered? I specifically want to use it on a Springfield EMP 9 that I love to carry.

Just get whatever grip tape you can find from a hardware store. Or...go here (http://www.skatewarehouse.com/griptape.html) and get some sweet colors.
Truly no need to over think it. I use grip tape on my Colt Commander.

I've used the 3M type (almost as abrasive as sand paper) in the summer months when hands are sweaty at the range.
Look in Home Depot and they'll have a decent selection including some rubberized type if it works for ya.

I gues I'll take a trip to Home Depot then, but basic black will be fine lol.

The rubberized is the best,.....IMO

Another question. Do the grip panels go over the tape?

I do with the ones I have installed, helps the tape from peeling

Great. Then I don't have to trim it perfect on the sides.

I allow the grips to overlap about 1/8"
