Have my eyes out for a pig/deer/home defense/zombie AR-10 style 308. Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.

How much do you want to spend , and what is important will you be running it supressed ever?

OP don't forget to take into account some (negative) opinions are based on a second or third person experience.

Probably never shoot supressed, though I'm not 100% sure. I've eyed LMT, LWRC, DPMS, POF....

the LWRC REPR is around $3500-$4000.... If you're thinking of spending around $3000, just buy a Larue and be done with it.

I had all the 308's at our range about a month ago.

I would suggest the LMT/SCAR based on price point and reliability.

The OBR was cool , but was balking at lighter weight surplus ammo , and if you want to feed your 308 cheap the Larue will not be as reliable with lighter surplus ammo.

If you want to feed it match ammo all the time buy the OBR, one of our snipers was so impressed he traded his REPR for the one we we were shooting.

The SCAR impressed the hell out of me lightweight and very accurate with good ammo.

Bushmaster has their entry-level for about $1100.00, otherwise the price just goes higher for better quality. I'm not a DPMS fan.

The Bushmaster is a DPMS

ptr-91....

done... it can shoot about 3 MOA and it can eat everything.

delayed roller blowback, magazines for $7 each, all kinds of fun can be had.....

They should be about $1500 or so.

I know right bushmaster actually sold the rights of their 308 and design to RRA.

The remington 308 is actually a DPMS with a Remington made Barrel I think this week

how about building to suit with a Mega Machine Ma-Ten receiver set?

i was looking into this but have spent alot of time researching a FAL and now im debating which battle rifle i really want. and from my screen name, you can see its a 3 way decision.

I'm building a DPMS compatable style now with a CMMG matched Billet upper and lower JP enhanced bolt Young Chromed carrier, LotharWalther polygonal barrel and a troy extreme rail for now till Noveske comes out with the NSR rail for a 308..

Have a CMC flat trigger coming.

Had an FAL and a H&K 91 and a Gallil liked them, but the AR style is so much more user friendly from an ergonomics standpoint they are a much slicker system.

Neither will have a trigger as nice as a good AR trigger, and I had Williams trigger jobs in both...

This, and this.

Also, I'd say .308 is probably not an ideal caliber for HD use unless you live on a significant amount of land, and are more worried about threats outdoors.

.308 inside a home..... :wow:

I have a DPMS that has ran flawless for me with every ammo I have put from Radway Green, PMC, Federal and all other types of my reloads. If it gave me problems I would be the first to tell you, but it honestly has not. With that being said I am thinking about selling it to upgrade to more than likely a POF .308 or SCAR 17. Possibly an LMT or LaRue but am fond of the Piston AR's now since I am in love with my LWRC M6A2. I would like to have a REPR but am not paying that kind of money, I would rather spend it on a high end 1911.

A bunch of the guns you listed I dont have any experience with. I have owned two though. I had the dpms lr 308. That gun sucked. It would not cycle half the time and was not very accurate. But I know some people have had good luck with them. So if you get a good one great but they are hit and miss. The gun I currently own is a pof 308. And I can say I love this gun. It eats anything I feed it and is very accurate.

But most of the guns on your list are top notch so it is hard to go wrong.

My Armalite (10A4CBSF) is a great rifle. I havent shot any cheap ammo but Ive never had a failure of any kind in over 700 rds. It's also sub MOA. I got mine for $1449.00(16"ss). You cant go wrong with an Armalite. I've never had a problem but I've heard that their customer service is excellent if you ever have an issue.

I have a Rock River LAR-8 that drives tacks out to as far as I can shoot. I've got nearly 4000 rounds through it and it still makes me smile every time I shoot it.

Maybe I'm going against the OP's intent for wanting a .308, but here it is:

I don't trust a 1MOA gun until it proves 1 MOA at 500 or 600yards/meters.

Very few people are capable of shooting one MOA to 600 yards.
At 600 yards it is more dependent on shooter skill and discipline than inherent accuracy or 1/4 inch difference in groups at100 yards.

Well I scrapped the whole AR-10 idea and am going to stick with my bolt action for the 308. I did however pick up an amzing POF 415 5.56! :)

I'm a black rifle newb, so I find myself googling up acronyms all the time.

Note to other newbs: If you google 'POF', do NOT use the "I'm Feeling Lucky" option, unless you want to be led to a sight where a LOT of people are looking to get "Lucky".

.308 for HD is just stupid. Way too much gun. Blast indoors will be disorienting to say the least. Suppressed, maybe, but still, misses will go 2 counties over.

Larue makes the most accurate AR pattern .308 on the market if you do a little research.

You will pay for that however. The scar is a 1.5-2.0 MOA gun depending on ammo of course. But, price is lower than the OBR.

I recently went through the same search that you did. I had a DPMS SASS which was a great rifle, but decided to upgrade after I really started enjoying shooting .308 through a semi-auto platform. For the price, DPMS can't be beat IMHO. Some folks put down DPMS because they went through a rough spot with quality on their AR-15s; however my experience is that their AR-10/308 models are built to a higher quality. Plus the DPMS SASS came in second behind the Knight's model for what eventually became the military's M110. That's pretty impressive in my book, especially considering the Knights' cost about three times the price of the DPMS SASS.

It really boils down to what you want to spend. You can check out my recent thread: http://www.glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=19567134#post19567134 If you want to go high end, I would strongly recommend the LMT MWS. I chose the LMT MWS after a pretty long search. I studied all the top tier brands. I chose the LMT based on their great customer service reviews, the fact that the British Military chose them as their "designated marksman rifle," as well as the incredible accuracy reported by so many other users. Plus I like the fact that you can remove the barrel with just two bolts, and change to another caliber based on LMT's other barrel offerings. You also may want to check out the semi-auto forum on SnipersHide.com. I almost bought a POF, however several folks have had terrible customer service experiences with the company, which is an automatic disqualification in my book. Plus their piston system is proprietary and accordingly the availability of after-market fixes may be limited someday. If you have time to wait, you can custom order a GA Precision GAP 10, which by nearly all accounts is outstanding and their price, depending on the options you choose, approximates the LMT and LaRue. Have fun in your search! Please post some pics when you get her home!

i also toy periodically with the idea of getting a 'nicer' AR-10 variant, but i have the dpms lr-308 with 24" heavy stainless barrel and it is sub-moa all the way out to 600 yds with fed 168 match hp, but only after i put a geisselle trigger in. a big heavy gun though, definitely not something for home defense or lugging around the woods and hills for deer.

there are a lot of good AR10's out there and to be honest i don't think you can go wrong with any of the brands mentioned in this thread. if money is no object i'd choose the SCAR 17 because mine has been 100% reliable with exceptional accuarcy for a battle rifle. the SCAR 17 is incredibly light and compares to a 5.56 in the recoil department while most of the other rifles mentioned weigh a few lbs more than the SCAR.

I owned a DPMS AP4 and foolishly sold it to pay off some bills. I know some folks bash DPMS but my AP4 was a great rifle at a very reasonable price with decent accuracy and it was always 100% reliable. based on my experience i wouldn't hessitate to recommend DPMS to anyone looking for a AR10 at a reasonable price. I recently purchased a SIG716 because I got it for a great price, $1400. i haven't shot the 716 yet but the rifle appears to be really well built and i've read good things about it so i'm confident the 716 will perform.

My choice for a 308 is a SCAR17. Very accurate has been dependable. Weighs a less than a AR Style.

As a rule, and this is just MY rule, I don't like ambi guns. I've had an ambi gun dump a magazine on me because the weapon bounced off my kit, hit the button, then the mag tumbled down the hill. Not an ideal situation.

However, buy from Grant with confidence.

After looking at many I got an AR10A4......it kicks some serious tush! Have had no problems, seems to feed all brands of 762X51, very accurate will Mil spec ammo, but really likes Fed. gold Match....sub MOA at 100 yards.

I seriously considered the Colt 901 until they announced that the modularity kit (which allows the user to replace the .308 upper receiver with a 5.56 receiver) wouldn't be sold with the rifle. That said, the reviews I've seen have been pretty positive. However, a lot of the parts are proprietary to Colt meaning that spares may be difficult to come by. As always, just my $0.02.

Just ordered a Bushmaster XM10 3F Moe Midlength Carbine from Bud's. I wanted a Midlength in .223 but the price bump to .308 was a no brainer since I have 5 AR's already in 5.56. Ordered 6 Pmags and a case of Federal 150FMJ which is what this gun is for. I have a few other .308's for long distance and paper punching. I know it will be a good rifle for it's purpose. I didn't need it but wanted it thanks to the election turnout. Things won't get better for a while.
