10mm pressure signs and velocity

I haven't loaded for handguns in a while and would like some input.

Here's the rundown: First let me say that I don't shoot Glocks. I owned a 21 for a while, but it never grew on me. They are fantastic weapons, but with me it's an ergonomic thing. The reason I'm posting here is because you guys have the most rabid 10mm fans and most comprehensive 10mm forum on the web. Glock Talk is great resource for all handgunners.

I just got my custom Delta Elite back from Rob Schauland at Alchemy Custom Weaponry after a 9 month build, and am in the process of working up some loads. I shot 3 loads over the Chronograph today (125 rds total.) Everything shot well and I didn't notice any overt signs of overpressure, but I did notice some extractor marks on the case heads.

The chrono results are as follows: *All loads utilize a 180 gn XTP seated at 1.257" and Starline brass.

7.6 gn Power Pistol, CCI 300:
Average 1,069
ES53.02
SD17.60

8.0gn Power Pistol, Fed 150:
Average1,086
ES 74
SD 22.33

9.2gn IMR 800X, WLP:
Average 1,105
ES 82.98
SD 26.03

How do these Numbers sound?
I'd like to get 1,200 fps W/ a 180gn bullet, but don't want to break a very expensive pistol in the process. I really don't think 1200fps would be pushing the envelope too much. On another note, I have shot the Buffalo Bore heavy 10mm through it with no problems. Advertised MV is 1350fps, but I did not confirm this with the chrono. It did feel pretty stout though!

The gun is a full-house custom job with all the usual goodies plus a Storm Lake fully supported, ramped barrel (critical for high pressure rds IMO.) I'm also using a 22lb Wolf spring.

U can push it a lot more. 1200 with a 180 gr xtp is easy. Beyond easy. The extractor mark is not from pressure. I am guessing being a new gun its from a sharp edge.

Go to 10 gr of 800x. That will hit it. I shoot 10.8 under mine.

Power pistol I never played with.

If u want that speed with a really great shooting round very accurate. Get some longshot.

9.2 gr longshot under 180 xtp will be between 1250 and 1300. A great med hot load.

Thanks for the info. That was a good observation about the extractor. I've had the pistol 10 years and just had it completely rebuilt and that includes an new Ed Brown Hardcore Extractor. It never crossed my mind.

How many firings do you usually get out of your brass? With .45 & .40 I shoot em till I lose em. Can you do that with a 10mm at 1200fps

Wow thats a really nice Delta Elite!!! I agree with you that the ergonomics and feel of the 1911 is better, I just wanted something in 10mm and couldn't afford to get into any of the 1911's in 10mm. All your brass looks fine, the primers are just gonna be flatter then a low pressure round like the .45, theres no way around it. Don't forget even your "light" loads pushing a 180 @ 1100 FPS far exceed the energy produced by 45 acp, heck even 45+p loadings don't touch it. From my experience barrel length makes a HUGE difference in the 10mm, and you having a 5 inch barrel should have absolutely no issue attaining 1300 FPS with a 180 grainer. I'd estimate around 10.7-11 gr bluedot would do it (11 gr. bluedot clocks high 1300's out of my 6 inch bbl). I'm surprised you didn't get more velocity with power pistol, my fav. power pistol load is 8.5 which clocks right on the nose 1300 from my 6 inch barrel, but I think you can go more cuz people on here have gone up to like 9.7 gr power pistol under a 180, and keep in mind one of alliants old manuals said 8.7 power pistol with a 180 JHP produced 33,000 PSI and high 1200's FPS from a 5 inch barrel, you got room to add more pressure

From my 4.6" stock G20sf, 8.5gr Power Pistol (8.7gr listed max) averaged 1205 fps. Your longer bbl should give you even more. PP meters well and is very consistent. Nice Delta Elite!

Thanks for the compliment on the Delta! It was the first 1911 i ever bought & its been a great pistol, but after sinking enough money to buy 3 glocks in it it's even better! I can't even articulate how fantastic it turned out.

I'm going to work up some loads at 9.5 & 10.0 grains of 800X, and go to 8.5 & 9.0 with Power Pistol. Ive got the 180 & 135 gn double tap at home, and I'm curious to chrono them. I'll be surprised if I get the velocity they claim, but I know those suckers are scootin'!

I get 1166 fps with a standard deviation of 21.77 fps out of a G20SF with KKM 4.6" barrel when loading 8.2 grains of Power Pistol, WLP primer, and 180 grain XTP with COL of 1.263". No signs of high pressure and I am sure I could safely get 1250 fps out of it, but I really prefer Accurate No. 9 for 10mm.

Quite possibly, however, I have used Remington 2-1/2 primers...I chronograph at least a string of 10 from each batch of loads and don't have any notes that they had a significantly different velocity. I prefer the WLP because they feel to be seat a bit tighter in Winchester brass, which I have a ton of. Of course that doesn't tell you squat about the CCI primers you are using (I only use CCI for 12ga shotshell and muzzleloaders). The point I am trying to make is that I would be surprised if primers made more than a ~10fps difference. I wager barrel/bullet fit, land type, and freebore would affect velocity much more than primers (assuming the same type...not substituting magnum or rifle). It isn't like we are comparing two of the same guns and barrels.
