View Full Version : Need tires for a cummins 2500, help
Just want a decent tire that wears well on my old 99 Dodge Cummins 2500. Currently running 235's so as long as I get something more road worthy, doesn't matter brand. My Michelin LTX's don't wear so well, even with rotation they round out too soon. Currently looking at Cooper Discoverer ST line. Anyone have a recommendation as to what good all season tire I can get that does well in snow and ice, as well as wear better than my current michelins?

Should be running 245's on that truck with stock rims.
When I got mine I bought 16" x 8" rims and run 265's on it. I ran Bridgestone Dueler Revos at first and they ran OK, but have ended up running BFGoodrich KO's now for two change outs. Tough tire that I get about 55,000 miles out of.
I agree that you should go up at least one size.
I am getting ready to put the 2nd set of Wrangler Duratracs on my Duramax, I like them a lot.
Don't buy cheap tires and scimp of the load ratings. This is a truck made to carry stuff and the tires are rated for a load range of "E", if I recall correctly.
I once a 2001 Ram 2500 with the Cummins and I got over 75K miles before I replaced the tires. I really could have gone even more, but I wanted fresh meat on there for the new buyer.
Thanks guys, no I never buy cheapo tires, just looking for a good E load rated tire that wears longer than the Michelins I have on it. I don't care much about big zombie crusher tires, I want performance and mpg to be optimized. 245s would be fine with me. The truck came with monster tires on it, traded them out immediately for stockers. Will take a look at some options in 245 and see what it gets me.
I ran the LTX/AS on my Cummins 3500. They are lame in the snow, but the wear was better than any other tire I ran.
Have you looked at alignment, ball joints (which the Cummins eats like Pez), etc?

The Toyo M/t's have been proven to last 50k+ on heavier trucks. Technically it's a "mud tire" but it really rides more like an all terrain tire. They're nowhere near as loud as any mud tire I've ever ran. Not even close. And they handle everything quite well.
I haven't checked the smaller sizes, but the 37's are E rated, so more than likely the smaller sizes are too.
I too had those michelins ltx's on the truck for the first 2 years I had it. They're the worst tires I've ever ran on anything. They're not cheap either, for what they are.
I'm running Nitto Dura-Grappler (road tire) on my Super Duty in the summer and Firestone Destination AT's during hunting season/winter .. Both are excellent tires and are "E" rated. I get better wear on the Firestone's , but the Nitto's see more mileage ( spring /summer) . I priced both sets at Tire Rack . I took the quote to my local tire dealer and he beat their shipped price to me.
If Michelin LTX/AS's are wearing prematurely, nothing else will either... I've seen more of those tires go 80k+ than any other with BFG'S coming in second.. I have a 2001 Dodge, and I either run Michelins or BFG commercials... I bought my truck with Firestone Transforces on it, and I'll admit they were a pretty dang good tires and I've talked to others that liked theirs also... I guess I may go that route if I needed new tires and the deal was right..
I've seen alot of Cooper tires over the last 11 years, as my Boss puts only that on our fleet vans due to him being buds with the tire shop owner... The 3/4 and 1 ton vans do marginally well, but the 1/2 ton tires on our 1500 vans are without question the wimpiest and most spineless tires I have ever seen... We've got 6 fenders and 2 sets of tail pipes smashed up to prove how these tires sling belts off like no tomorrow... Bought a few personal vehicles in my immediate family that have had Coopers on there from the previous owners, bad luck for us... They're great tires unless the vehicle is actually driven...

Got a great deal on some Cooper ST MAXX tires, getting them on next week.
Might take a look at the Kumho tires. I put a set on my truck last year after a number of people on this forum highly recommended them. They still look like new after a years use. I'm using 265/75 which is a step up from originals. I was concerned about noise but these tire are low noise. Check out the Kumho Road Venture AT which come in load rating C, D & E.
I have BFG KO's on my 06 3500 CTD Love them, but I don't pay too much attention to life I'm just too hard on them.
Going from Michelin to Cooper would be the wrong way if you seek better quality. The Michelin should be a good brand, after them I'd look to Bridgestone/ Firestone.
Load range 'E' too I'm sure.
the Michelins wore out wayyyyyy too quickly and I have experience with the Coops, got a decent deal and am going to get the Coops. A little over $600 for the set, good for me with regard to tire prices these days. The Michelin LTX's I have on there are cracking on the sidewalls and rounded out on the corners, with proper rotation. Perhaps they are too soft for a heavy Dodge rig.
On my 3/4 ton Suburban I have had excellent luck with Firestone Transforce HT's. I went from 245's to 235's and couldn't be happier.
I run a Toyo Open Country A/T have had them since 2007 and put about 40 k miles on them. Still plenty of life left not even close to the wear bars yet. I ventured into the tire business once upon a time and learned more than id ever care to admit about tires. That being said Michelins in my experience are one of the longest lasting tires on the road. We pushed Toyo's almost exclusively at my shop after testing several different brands. That being said if my wholesaler would have been able to get Michelins I would have sold them too. If yours seem to be wearing prematurely you have something else going on. Alignment, tie rod ends and a slew of other parts all effect tire. Straight axle trucks create even more wear due to the way a tire scrubs while turning. I personally rotate the tires on my 2001 Chevy HD about every 5000 miles. The heavier the front end the more wear etc. I would be looking for a fix to whatever mechanical problem is prior to putting new shoes on your truck though. The Cummins weighs about 6-700:more pounds than your typical motor. That is a lot of extra wear and tear.
Cracking on the sidewalls is usually indicative of dry rotting. How old are the tires? Stay away from silicone based tire dressing ie. ArmorAll if you want them shiny use a teflon based dressing.
What size do you need? The LTX MS are one of the longest wearing tires out there and usually come with a warranty to back the mileage.
I have BFG KOs on my 2001 Tahoe. With the low number of miles I drive, I doubt that I will wear them out.
From now on, any big truck or SUV we have will have KOs as replacements.
That's a tough tire.
