Well I got the Foundation in, I have water and Conduit for elec run from house underground to Shop, Radiant Heat is in 4 200 FT Loops. Hopefully framing will start this week, Shop will be 28 X 28 with 10 Ft ceilings on the first floor and 8 ft ceilings on the second floor. Back of shop is about 4 Foot under ground with sides sloping down to 2 Foot toward the front.

SOme pic's show snow fence $200.00 worth to try and keep chickens out so there not eatting seed and some show where I had to dump all the dirt that cam out, I used it to raise a spot in the back where I plan to put a pole barn.

Cool. What are you going to waterproof the foundation walls with? Are you going to use fiberglass batt insulation or spray foam?

BLACK Z
10-07-2012, 16:04
I am unsure yet, I am going to tar the outside and Prob use fiberglass for insulation. I love spray foam and used it in parts of my house But not sure if I want to spend that kinda money.

If you're going fiberglass, use spray foam around windows and doors, and at any wall penetrations. You should also use it between the concrete and framing as that is a common heat leakage point.

I am going to use OSB on the inside walls, and ceiling, I got all of the lumber from the local saw mill for framing and siding, and I am putting on a Metal roof Grambel style, its going to have a barn feel to it. I am not doing regular garage doors, I am going to do 2 8 ft Sliders.

Omg, I'd get that checked out before I worried about a garage!! Do you have a well for drinking water? I'd stop using it immediately.

I use a 199,000 BTU tankless to run my 1600ft^2 basement floor and my domestic hot water. Its been in use for about 5 years and works very well. Originally I used a 50gal power vented water heater to heat just my floor and it barely worked at all. If you think about it, the tubes in my floor hold about 5 gallons of water. With the tankless, it gets up to temp fairly quickly. With the power vent water heater, I had to heat 10times as much water when I needed heat. It was bad.

BLACK Z
10-08-2012, 08:02
Jumper it makes sense and that is what I was going to use, Prob not a 199,000 for the radiant but a tankless unit, but a lot of the research i have done say's not to use them. I guess thee is a prob with a closed system because the tankless is looking for cold water and the water that comes back is still warm or hot.

1/2 or 3/4. Only difference will be how much air the system will hold. If you will be doing a lot of work with an impact gun or a paint sprayer get the 3/4, work is th same just material costs difference

Code is 4 wires, 2 hot, 1 neutral, and 1 insulated ground. If you are wring it yourself make sure you main box has a ground bar in it sometimes they don't and you have to buy me separately and out one in. Also if you used GFCI outlets one GFCI outlet can handle 5 more outlets/circuits down the line for 6 total per breaker.

BLACK Z

Loking at the ampacity charts , 3ga. wire is iffy for a 100 amp service . Why not use #2 ? It's more than adequate and a lot more common . Hell , in this part of the country , 3 ga. would be a special order item . Nobody stocks it .

Nice looking shop.

My house came with a 30x32 shop, with 30 ft ceiling.

For the most part, pretty nice, But I'd suggest sitting down, and figuring out EXACTLY what you want, before you make any permanant decisions (doors, bays etc)

And plum in plenty of extra power outlets. Best thing about my shop is I have a 2 110 outlets, and 1 240 outlet, every 6-10 feet. So I can power anything, from just about anywhere.

Per my charts and master electrician sub contractor not even close to iffy. 3 gauge CU is code for 90 degree THHN. Now if it is a special order item then I can see using 2 but other than that no need to.

I am trying for a barn look, that is why I am going with a barn door in the front, The opening is going to be 16 Ft when done, I am unsure if I should go with 2 10 tall by 8 wide swing out or if I should with two 8 Ft sliders.

I am going to run plenty of outlets, and lighting.

Here are a couple things I will change on my next garage. 2 story 24x24 garage
Recessed lighting lumber still gets close to the lights even with a 11.5 ft. ceiling
another 1 or two 240 volt outlets
outside hook up for a generator for power outages, I use have to run a cable through a window to the 240 outlet to power my house.
surface mount for electrical
run the electrical high on the walls for the horizontal runs
lights everywhere
network and phone wiring

I used engineered lumber for the beam and floor joists, so I don't have any support posts in the middle of the floor.

If I many make a couple of suggestions, in case you haven't already got them covered...

On the exterior, underground walls, I'd go with asphalt and two layers of roofing tar paper, asphalted before, in between, and then a final layer... with 2" fiberglass board for insulation and drainage. Backfill with 3/4" or larger crushed stone.

I'd also recommend two 'French drain tiles' -

http://www.basementsystems.com/basement-waterproofing/french-drain/exterior-french-drain.html

- so that if one gets crushed you don't have to dig anything up.

If it's not in your plans, I'd add a true 50 amp welding circuit. My electrician failed to calculate the power loss and my 30 amp circuit turned into a 16 amp one.

Good luck and have fun!

110 amps is more than 100 amps. Like I said 3 gauge is code for 100 amp service. No need to use 2 gauge for 100 amp service unless you just like to waste money. Codes are codes for a reason. Also unless You will be running a welder or a massive compressor or some other sustained high amp load 100 amp service is more than enough.

I have decided on a Garage door which was ordered today, instead of going with the barn style sliding doors,

All of the framing and the bracing is out of 2x6 Lumber all from my buddies saw mill ( it is stamped and graded lumber )

Both sides of the trusses will have storage, Ill have four doors to enter one in each corner.

Still unsure what to do for heat up stairs, any ideas? I was thinking elec base board or some type of hanging heater.

Also not sure what to do on the outside after the wood has dried, Paint or stain or leave it natural?

Would teh radiant from down stairs hat second floor?

Could I hook up hot water baseboard to the second floor?

Would the hot water heater that Ill prob use for the radiant be ot enough for the base board on the second floor?

Got the windows in, door upstairs framed out and saddle in, I also added a Brace at the peak to reinforce it for the Antique Block and Tackle BARN PULLEY system that I got that still is in working shape.

Sofits are also in on the front and I started to put the outlet boxes in.

Per my charts and master electrician sub contractor not even close to iffy. 3 gauge CU is code for 90 degree THHN. Now if it is a special order item then I can see using 2 but other than that no need to.

Can't go by 90 degree column, have to size by term. lugs, which almost all are 75 degree. You can only use 90 degree column before derating, since this is a single phase feeder with not more than 3 current carrying conductors, derating is not necessary.
I'm pretty sure #2 is 115a @ 75 degree and #3 copper is 100, but I don't have the book in front of me.
Also OP, this will be a sub panel, so all grounds and neutrals have to be seperate, and do not install the bonding screw that may come with the panel. So you'll need a ground bar and a neutral bar.

BLACK Z

Elec part confuses me, The ground bar and neutral bar should be inside the 100 amp sub panel?

di11igaf

Elec part confuses me, The ground bar and neutral bar should be inside the 100 amp sub panel?

Yes, you'll have your feeds which I'm guessing you'll pull off your main service panel from your house. I believe you said you already ran a conduit, so depending on what size you ran you may have limited yourself as to what size sub panel your going to install. If you ran at least an 1-1/4, you can do a 100amp sub-panel. Basically you'll need 3- #3 copper thwn conductors and 1 #8 green ground. Put a 100a 2-pole breaker in the house service panel(this protects the wires going to sub-panel) and feed the main breaker in the 100a sub. You could do a main lug panel without a main, but you'll be screwing yourself as there's many more restrictions, so just get a panel with a main breaker. #3 is an oddball size, so you may have to upsize the wire to #2, but you may find 3 stocked.
You'll also need a ground rod since its detached, so drive a ground rod and run a bare #6 from the rod to the ground bar in the sub panel. Your #8 ground from the house panel will land on the sub panel ground bar, one of the #3s will be neutral, landed on the neutral bar, other 2 are hots.
Keep all grounds from the garage wiring on the ground bar, all neutrals on the neutral bar(even though they're together in the main service, they can only be bonded once, which is why you must keep them separate at the sub panel)
This is NEC minimum all local jurisdictions have their own electrical requirements, so your area could possibly need something different.
BTW - really nice garage.

The orange trees? I had to take down some Plum trees, and I was able to save a Apple I think well see in the spring.

So I will need a ground rod. That sucks unless I buy a bunch of wire it'll be in the front and may stand out unless I can hide it some how.

1 or 2 rods? I know at my house I have 2. How far from the building?

Ground rod , no biggie it got a patina and I don't even see it.

Heating , I got radiant floor , three speed pump , wood with propane back-up. It's 78' x 38' and it takes about two days to heat the floor but when it does , what can I say , Beautiful job.

Here is the front pretty much done except for the Top door, The Picture of the two small 2x4 is the support for the dowel that goes into the building that holds the rope. The weather stripping for the garage door is behind the door trim used a Dado blade to cut the grooves.

The Pictures from the field show the 300 Plus foot Ditch that I put in last year you keep the water from coming off the hill to fast or to much, it keeps it off the main yard for the house, the itch is 6 foot deep at it's deepest and is filled with ditch stone, it empties to a stream on both ends, the dirt that came out of the ditch went ont eh downhill side to act as a back stop.

I really like the lighting fixtures over the garage door. Nice detail.

2 fixtures give it a good visual balance with the windows above them and should throw some good light.

Thank you, I plan to finish the upstairs off, My Buddy who owns the Saw mill where I got all of my wood from, Makes finished Tongue and Groove and other types of wood for finishing, or I may go rough for the cabin feel.

I used SER into the House and URD from Shop to a J Box under porch where it meets the SER. I Have a 100 Amp service, all of the circuits are 20 Amp except for the 220 for the Welders and Compressor. I'll Take a Pic of inside the box next time I open it, It came out real nice.

DOwnstairs I have 2 dual 4 Ft lights above the Bench on there own switch, I then have 8, 8 Ft quad Lights spaced evenly though out the shop downstairs, I have them on 4 switches so there are two per switch and I have them in squares so I can light up certain areas. This shop lights up very well. Upstairs I have two lights in the storage areas, 1 in the hallway and I also have three ceiling fans with lights down the center.
Outside I have a motion flood light and two Barn style lights above garage door and one above main door.

Beyond beautiful.

Now you need a huge, concrete driveway, and a really fast/beautiful car.

I have a Old Fast restored Z 28 Camaro in my other barn, Plus Quads Snowmobiles Motorcycles and all of that other stuff. No need for a Concrete D Way, I live on a farm adn want to keep it old fashion, The Dway is Crusher run smooth and pretty dust free.

That hay/dutch door is scary. I know I would fall out of that dang thing. Shop/garage/barn looks great!

Beer starts flowing, friends are over, someone goes up stairs....foot steps heard going towards the door.

Then, through the vista of the open lower carriage door we see the friend hit the ground HARD.

Yeah, I'd add a little porch or something. Probably be a nice view too.

I like the 'barn lights' over the doors. Where did you find those? I've been looking for something like that.

I have thought about adding a Little second story porch, that maybe be in near future.

I think they came from Barn Lighting or Barn Lights.com. Not the cheapest things but well made.
