"The winner of a roach-eating contest in South Florida died shortly after downing dozens of the live bugs as well as worms, authorities said Monday."

There are a handful of things I would not do for a Million Dollars.

Eating a live cockroach would probably be near the top of that list.

:puking:

My guess is anaphylactic shock. Stupid way to die, eating roaches...

I remember some time ago, a woman died of water intoxication after drinking large amounts of water as part of a radio call-in contest.

It's probably a good idea not to ingest unreasonably massive quantities of anything at one time.

None of the other contestants got ill, so that largely rules out bug poisons or other pathogens.

My guess would be he either had an allergy or some pre-existing condition.

Either way, that's irresputably discusting way to go out!

I'm surprised the guy on the "Man against Food" show on the Travel channel doesn't go face down in a plate of French Fries,or ultra hot wings sometime.

He'd never even notice a few roaches in some of the slop he eats.

Duly noted: This is not the way to gain the radiation immunity of roaches. :faint:

One of the comments says 'never mix roaches and worms'.

By the way I live in Deerfield Beach where this took place. Only about a mile from my house. I will be interested in hearing the actual cause of death when it is determined. Is it possible he asphyxiated on the vomit? Eye witnesses in the news reports are saying he was vomiting profusely and his face was covered in roach parts. There is a video online that shows this was a pretty big event with a packed crowd in the store.

Roaches check in, but they don't check out...

Like suicide bombers, you just gotta wonder what the heck were they thinking? He died eating live roaches. There are some dumb ways to die and surely that must be near the top of the list.

Please... someone tell me he said "Hold my beer, and watch THIS!" before doing the deed.

I wish we had the opportunity to see one hour into the future. I wonder what that knot head would have thought if the preview showed that he would be dead in the next hour from eating live roaches? It probably wouldn't have made any difference.

Stupid and sad at the same time. Doubt it was anything to do with the bugs. I have eaten cockroaches, big North Carolina ones, they aren't that bad unless they aren't totally dead when you swallow them. Had a First Sgt. try to one up us when we were eating bugs in the field one time, he had a giant one, like four incher...he was holding it up to show it off as he ate it...it ran down his throat for him. Talk about wretching for an hour. Too funny.

Those big NC grubs from the swamps of Camp Lejeune were worse, slimy and nasty. Black beetles taste like corn nuts. Grasshoppers are yummy and some ants taste like licorice.

Military SERE has a how topic on identifings bugs to eat. A cockroach would be the last thing on my meal plate & I would pass on most of the other crawling creatures.

The grasshopper is not to bad. Please don't ask me how I know :tongueout:
