Well think about it this way. If they circumvent the rules this way, why would other employers not follow? Could very easily be a sign of things to come.

So you now work a 40 hour a week job and your employer decides to cut you back to 30 hours. Of course they will expect you to work harder and complete the same amount of work in a shorter time, for less pay, why wouldn't they?

So you say I will just quit and find another job. Maybe? But if you are not very highly trained and special in your field it will not be that easy. The average worker is very replaceable today. There are more people willing to work for less than at any other time in history.

Of course the democratic party will just use these tactics by big business to further fuel the so called struggle between the classes. When in reality they are just trying to keep their head above water.

Not circumventing rules... The Affordable Healthcare Act has made it prohibitively too expensive for Darden to hire full time employees. Since full time employees are too expensive, they'll hire part time until that becomes too expensive.

Unintended consequence of making a business with 50 or more people required to offer a benefit.

Without this Act, companies have been hiring PT employees for years to get around benefits. Nothing new here.

All ready a common practice. Wal Mart, among others, hires many part time people to avoid giving benefits.

We can pay more for healthcare, or we can pay more for our Wal Mart, et al, purchases. America is unusual in tying healthcare to employment.

Cutting hours to avoid paying benefits is nothing new. Of course we can expect it to get more prevalent as the benefits' cost continue to rise. Unintended consequences anyone?

Right ... Nothing new.

But ... Benefit costs to employers were / have been increasing yearly at an accelerated rate ... well before Obamacare. It is one of the cornerstone reasons FOR Obamacare ... to reign in the ever increasing acceleration of healthcare costs. The trajectory was unsustainable.

It may have been one of the reasons, but the net effect of Obama care has been to increase premiums for the insured, see changes and cuts in coverages that aren't mandated by law, see employers offer the cheapest (to them) coverage available and to see the pool of those who are no longer on private insurance grow. I don't see any of the above as a good thing.

But i thought servers and others in the business only made $2-3 dollars/hour? They rely on tips for income.

Average $25/person for dinner, not counting any drinks, I think the chain could well afford to provide some type of basic care plan.
