My old hometown in Idaho of about 20k people had a murder about once a decade or less.

This is the 2nd murder in less than 6 months. Since moving here 4 years ago, I've heard of at least 10 murders in the area, and 4 within a mile from my house.

This is supposedly a conservative and safe area...

Any crime professionals have any idea what could be driving the huge increase in crime around here? The economy? Drugs?

And no, it's not due to illegals. Only 1 or 2 of the murders involved any racial group other than poor white trash...

I really want to sell my house and move back to peaceful Idaho, but my wife can't stand the long winters there...:steamed:

He moves in. . . People start dying. . .

Hmmmmmmm. . .

Hello Behavioral Analysis Unit, I'd like to report a suspect for you to investigate. . .

Seriously though, I'd say:
Sucky economy + Drug use = Major crime spike.

5 of the murders happened at apartment buildings, one behind a church late at night, and the others I know of were at regular homes in decent neighborhoods...:dunno:

Where I work and live, we have, on average, ten to fifteen homicides a year. Most are either drug related or passion related.

But traffic fatalities claim, again on average, 20 to 30 folks a year on our city roads. I would guess that it is the same in your neck of the woods. Probalby riskier to drive in your area than live in your area.

Damn beat me to it. Vart Didn't you move there to get AWAY from crime.

Don't feel bad just next to my little suburb is suppose to be an even nicer suburb filed with McMansions and a "supposedly" excellent public school system.

All I got to say is everyone I met from that sleepy little well off suburb is stone cold crazy. The kids are weird, the teens are wannbe white gansta rappers, and the Moms are either raging alcoholics or strung out on Perscription Meds. There is only 300 people in that town and there have been several murders, including one murder suicide. The best was a husband who beat his wife's head in with a hammer, then he took a shower, then called 911, confessed and asked "to be picked up, please."

A cop I know there said he was sitting on the couch watching the TV, calm as could be, just like he was waiting for the cable guy to show up.

Sometimes small town stuff is just crazy.

Just visited Prescott on an Arizona trip. Looked to me like you won't find a much more peaceful place anywhere in the US. Are there no murders in Idaho?

No, they can't afford the population loss.

Most homicides are drug or relationship related, you can bet those follow that trend.

The article suggests that it is a mother and son who were murdered. Not always of course, but more than a few women who are murdered are murdered by a husband or boyfriend. As said by others I also suspect that this may be a murder by a husband/boyfriend or drug related.
Some suggest that murder may actually be one of the easiest crimes to prevent individually: Avoid drugs and don't associate with criminals and gangs, if you have an abusive spouse leave him immediately and move far away with no forwarding address, and avoid employment or frequenting convenience stores/gas stations especially at night.

Something like that happened when I was a kid a quarter mile from our home.
That was one of the reasons I became a kid with his very own gun. A S&W model 67.

Thanks Pops

** UPDATE **

http://www.prescottaz.com/main.asp?SectionID=1&SubSectionID=1&ArticleID=111757

Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction...

Turns out a 28 yr old male was cleaning an apartment with his 44 yr old brother and 72 yr old mother.

The 44 yr old brother and the mother get into an argument, so the brother goes to his aprtment next door and gets two handguns, comes back and kills his mother.

The 28 yr old brother tackles the brother, they struggle, and he shoots the older brother several times, killing him. He then calls 911.

I bet those involved looked like this:

Older brother:

A very much agree with this. How much of the violent crime is done by/to gang members or drug users/dealers?

If our media were actually there to help us, they would preach this, and always explain how it relates to each violent crime.

Well said, and true I believe. I would add bars to the list of places to avoid. Random murders get lots of media attention, but represent a small percentage of homicide cases.

If I lived in a place like the OP describes, I would be among the 'on alert' folks who carry all the time with one in the tube.

Definitely an uptick in homicides in my area the last few years. When I was a kid a guy stabbed his mother to death and that was big news here for a while, every couple of years you'd hear of one, now the area has a couple a year. Mostly seem to be either domestics or alcohol related.

At least around here, outsiders have less of a chance of being shot in a trailer park. Killed by a meth lab explosion maybe.

Vart, tragically this is what is becoming all of Arizona.

Im guessing my parents will gone around the time I am able to retire and I am leaving AZ and moving to someplace like northern Idaho.

Arizona is becoming a haven for gangs, junkies, welfare dirtbags, illegals and liberals all from California.

They eff'ed up CA so bad they are moving here and are in the process of eff'ing up AZ too.

Unfortuately, Im stuck here another 20 years.

Yup....the only thing the our TP's have going for them is they are smaller and spread out. If our TP's were one big unit like the 'projects' it would be the worst..

I lived in rural Central Texas while in the Military, somewhere in the late 90's Meth hit like a tornado here.
Tweekers on my doorstep at 9 am asking for "gas money", used needles in my front yard etc.
I could see it comming and asked for help from LE when the needles started appearing in my yard, they said needles weren't an issue.
It all hit the fan when a neighbor of ours about a 1/4 mile away shot his Mom when she walked in on his cook. After the rolling neighborhood gun battle I moved in to town.
Every time I hear about crime in my area it's the cooks, tweekers, or street pharmacutetical specialists having a disagreement.
I've seen what this stuff does to people and I just wish they would lock them up or shoot them on sight, that crap is pure evil.

I'm still wondering why people think the neighborhood somebody lives in dictates how stable they are. Going by that logic, everyone on GT should be dead by now. Multi-millionaires murder their spouses or commit suicide all the time, and they live in nicer homes and neighborhoods than any of us here.

+1

That is what I was saying in my post. I see more drug use in the high end neighborhoods. When Mom and Dad both work high end professional jobs and you are a teen in a big house, with your own car, and a couple hundred dollars in your pocket, you can get involved in a lot of bad things.

We see teenager with scholarships to ivy league school end up dead from herion or meth ODs all the time in the rich neighbnorhoods around here.
