View Full Version : Generic Cover Letter
My college's career service office wants a copy of my resume and a cover letter to keep on file for recruiters. I've written cover letters before, but how does one write a cover letter that isn't addressed to anyone or any specific job title? A general resume I can see, but I don't see how its possible with a cover letter.
Tagged because I want to know as well.
Dear "Hiring manager" or Human Resources Director"
I am interested in a [management, Architectural, administrative, avionics, etc...] position with your company. My qualifications are as follows...
I can be reached at 555-555-5555
Thank you for your consideration
This is my suggestion as I have written many cover letters in the last 2 years and have some that are pre written for convenience. My "Adams Resume Almanac" says you should address the cover letter to the "hiring authority or the human resources director" and you should always know the name of the person you are sending it to, and if you don't... call and ask.
I was told in the few interviews I have had that it was my well written cover letter and professional resume that got me the interview.

Dear (insert name here),
How about them (name of local sports team)? I have often longed to work at (insert company name) for years. In fact, my dad is a big fan of your products. I know your stock has done (well, poorly - pick one) and I'm excited to be part of the team.
Thank you for your interest. Watch out for that (insert upcoming weather event).
Lack of sincerely,
My name here.
