You're giving a lot of credit to Godfather Part 3.
The first two Godfather films were among the best Mafia movies ever made...Part 3 was complete crap IMHO.
I'm going to have to watch the Godfather movies again since I can only recall a few things, but for some reason I remember liking The Godfather 2 more than The Godfather. The Godfather 3 is pure rubbish.
Thought Casino was better than Goodfellas.
Casino is the best of all of them in my opinion...one of those I like to watch from time to time. Can't say the same for the other movies.

The helicopter ambush was intense though.
To redeem myself, I own GF 1 and 2 on Blu ray. Did not get the 3rd. Also have Goodfellas and Casino on Blu. Another one I own is Mean Streets

The Godfather is not only the best mafia movie, it is one of the greatest movies of all time. That said, the first time you see a movie is when it makes it's greatest impact. I was too young to appreciate The Godfather when it was released. I VERY much enjoyed Goodfellas, even more than The Godfather.
I had a MUCH better understanding of organized crime at the time of Goodfellas, as I had gotten to know a few wiseguy types over the years.

My Blue Heaven.
While I truly enjoy the Godfather trilogy, (especially GF I and II), the absolute best 'mafia type movie' is:
"Once Upon A Time in America".
Period.

That scene was off the hook! Seems like I remember another scene, something about a parade that was pretty awesome too. The movie itself wasn't great, but it did have a couple really cool scenes.
MOST ACCURATE...

I enjoy all of the above movies. But the best IMO wasn't even a released movie. It's the Coppola Restoration of the Godfathers I and II. Synching the two movies so they go chronologically in order.

Yes.
I love GF I and II, but "Once upon a time..." was a better film, IMHO. While still having all of the mafia stuff. I just cared more for the characters and the storyline, most people in GF I didn't really give a ***** about.
Another movie I really like is "Heat", not sure it qualifies as "mafia" movie though.

I wimped out and didn't vote. I love all of them equally. Although Goodfellas and Casino are both 10's in my book, there is no way in good conscience that I could ever cast a vote against GF.
Even choosing between GF I and II is too difficult. I'll just watch them all and enjoy them. No voting.

Casino and The Departed get my vote.
Out of the ones you listed, Id say Goodfellas. There are soooo many more that should be on that list though.

The Godfather was a romanticized version of the Mafia. Goodfellows was closer to reality. "Donnie Brasco", even more so.

A close relative is retired NYPD Detective whose career spanned from the 1960's to the 80's. That is what he has told me. Also that they were much more difficult to infiltrate early in his career as opposed to when he retired.
EDIT: He also said the Russian mobsters were more loyal and ruthless and ran a tighter ship.

I think Goodfellas might be my favorite. I liked them all a lot. I might watch them all again over the next week and change my mind. Who knows.

Yes. 3 IS watchable if you see it on it's own. 2 wasn't anywhere near 1.
Casino and The Departed get my vote.
Two other epic movies. Great writing and cinematography in both.

I dunno. I think they were more civilized in the 40's and 50's than they were in the 70's and 80's.
Seems they adhered to the rules a lot better earlier in the century.

Great thread. I voted Goodfellas, which is just one of my all time favorites, but wish Casino was on there. Those two are tied for me.
Oddly enough, my wife and I hadn't seen any of the Godfather's up until a few years ago. We rented them all and sat to watch them all in one go. One was bleh. Two was meh. We didnt have enough energy to even try and watch three. They just didnt do it for us.

I see a lot of people voting for Casino, and although I liked that movie a great deal, there's one nagging gripe that I've got which puts that film out of my "Top 5" for mafia movies, and that gripe is that Joe Pesci plays the EXACT same character in Casino that he played in Goodfellas. Same attitude, same timing, same facial expressions, EVERYTHING. He doesn't even bother to vary things up a bit with some unique quirks or different mannerisms. Only the names of the two characters differ.
Don't get me wrong, I love Pesci's portrayal of a sociopathic, loose cannon mobster...I just liked it better the first time he did it - in Goodfellas.
Also, don't forget A Bronx Tale and Eastern Promises.
