Media Suddenly Muted on Jobless Claims

Last Thursday morning, the headlines on National Public Radio were jubilant. "Jobless Claims Drop To Lowest Level In More Than Four Years," they crowed. NPR's anchors repeated the news in their hourly and half-hourly updates. The sudden, seasonally-adjusted drop--from 369,000 to 339,000 new claims--was touted by NPR and the rest of the mainstream media as timely evidence of economic recovery under President Barack Obama.

This week, jobless claims have soared to 388,000--a four-month high. NPR explained, correctly, that both changes were largely the result of the fact that California failed to process all of its jobless claims last week and therefore submitted an incomplete report that was rectified this week. But it did not bother to revisit its cheerleading from the week before, nor did it try to imply broader conclusions about the direction of the economy under Obama. The headline is: "Jobless Claims Take Sharp Jump: Rose By 46,000 Last Week."

Truth always manages to float to the top like an unwelcomed turn doesn't it?

So Jack Welch was right. Larry Kudlow is going to be crushed. He told Welch that no party screws with those numbers because then nobody can trust those numbers, and if you cannot trust governments numbers, the earth stops spinning. Yes, I know. Kudlow is an idiot.

Isn't it a coincidence that Moonbeams state did something that would help Obama.

Well, it's already been determined here that the jobless numbers are rigged, so I'm assuming the conspiracy theorists here support the media ignoring "bogus" numbers. Otherwise, they'd be changing their tune, and we all know conspiracy theorists never do that...

The adjustment is timed so that it doesn't affect the unemployment rate for this month. How convenient.

Many of the Obama truth squadders were posting that very thing. Anyone who thought those numbers could be fudged in any way was a conspiracy nut.

Score one for the conspiracy nuts.

Truth is nobody knows what the actual numbers are. It's all conjecture at this point. Dems say it's low while Repubs say it is actually high because people stopped looking. You will never be able to get meaningful statistics on this issue.

Just go on Shadowstats. That guy calculates unemployment based on the pre1994 change in the calculation and based on depression area type calculations.

It's an eye opener. Romney at least brought up those that quit looking and claimed over 10% unemployment in the last debate.

Being cynical, at least a little bit, can be a good thing. At a minimum, consider how the message may benefit the messenger.

Are you surprised that the media looks the other way when BHO and his cult... er... administration lie? :wow:
