A couple of months I was off duty and met a lady and we hit it off pretty good. We saw each other a couple of times but she had never asked what I did and I had not told her I was a cop. Anyway, we we had just got back in my car and she asked if I had a pen. I told her yeah it is in my center console. She opened it and saw my spare set of handcuffs in the console. She did not say a word, and looked at me like I was Ted Bundy. I did not hear from her for about a week. I finally called and got a pretty cold response until I explained but now, she says she really is not that into cops....go figure.

If they don't wear Hoppe's #9 for perfume, I'll pass. That's my acid test.

LOL I work with a girl who says H #9 is her favorite scent on a man. Her dad was a cop and she has always loved the smell.

If I ever find one who wears Hoppes #9 and has a fetish for big chain saws, I might have to re-think this whole marriage thing.

I guess it depends on how your family was brought up to see cops.

Some saw them as a threat, while some saw them as the "Good Guys".

You were probably lucky that she broke it off considering her view of cops. There may have been a good reason in her family, to fear the police

To hell with her..... If she can't accept who you are, then there's no reason to give her any of your time.....

And what Janice said too.....

Exactly. Better this way than getting more involved and then who knows what she'll do to get to you, including getting you fired so she can take another cop off the streets. I have heard stories like that from my IA buddies.

Yeah, you are definitely better off without her, if she has a dim view of cops. You don't want her placing you or your career at peril.

In the future, if this would occurr, tell her you are in the porn movie business.........She may surprise you too.

I'd seriously wonder if there were warrants for her or her relatives. It's better to have spent some time and $$$ now then a lot of time and $$$ later.

My wife and I had met at group gatherings a few times, and one night my sheriff's deputy buddy and I stopped in the coffee shop a bunch of these people frequented. My now wife came up behind me and started playing with the cuffs I kept tucked in the back of my belt...

It is difficult to develop relationships on the job , many people have preconceived opinions. Some places are better to meet others. I met my late wife at a Hospital...one thing good about them other than the pain from a twisted knee are a lot of single people!

I think it's kind of strange she went out with you a few times and never bothered asking what you do. I mean, wouldn't that be one of the first questions that would be asked?

Anyways, like janice and the others said....good riddance. I can't imagine what her family history must be like, or even her own history for that matter.

Speaking from my own experience, it took my wife a long time to get used to the job. Actually, she probably never did fully get used to it. Now that our older son is showing interest in LE I know she isn't happy about it, though she isn't saying anything.

I agree. "What do you do?" is right up there with "where are you from?" Then consider all of the times when work might come up..."I can't that night, I'm working", "my buddy from work saw that movie last week", etc, etc, etc

Probably dating a reserve so she didn't have to feel guilty about taking a real cop off the streets for a few hours... :whistling:

We're a force multiplier.

Maybe she is afraid of the hours, worrying if you'll come home from work every night, something along those lines rather than something nefarious. ultimately ends up the same, though.

Not much different than any daddy that is overly protective... besides, it makes for a great plot for a bumbling romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant. Oh wait, that's already been made, minus the cop part.

Let's just say I know of one fellow who was more than overly protective, but mostly because of the grizzly business he was into in Philly.

Honestly it's been so long since he has been here that I don't remember his family pictures too well. I know he had relatives in other parts of the Northeast, (cannot say where). If it gives you any clues there have been TV documentaries with him being one of the prime subjects talked about as to criminal history.

Inside he was actually fairly decent for a criminal type. He almost always offered a little Italian food that he made from ingredients that he "came by". Of course, those of us who were smart enough knew that it wasn't good to partake of that. In a way I actually miss him. He used to keep some of the younger set in line. We used to have him and some others from the Northeast, in on RICO and what have you.

Yup, just move on & forget about her. Juat curious, did she mention why she "just wasn't into cops"? I can recall from my military days, alot of the girls who said the same about military guys was because either she or a girfriend of hers had been screwed over 1 time too many by a military guy, so they just don't bother w/them anymore. Kinda like we do w/badge bunnies or dispatchers, but I digress...
