“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.”

As a native Texan, let me say that "Big Tex" will be missed at the State Fair, but it's not like the Alamo burned down or anything.

It was a 50 foot statue made of plyboard and chicken wire. How long did anyone expect it to last?

I don't expect any flags to be flown at half-mast over this.

It was mostly the giant clothes that burned. They replace them periodically anyway.

It'll be back next year.

Being in Austin I have to listen to all the longhorns crying about it.

I, like you, don't give a crap either way.

That's your problem, you're in Austin. Not Texas.

Don't forget that in this forum there are subjects that don't really matter to some people and that there are subjects that do matter. It helps to be thick skinned around here sometimes. Keep your chin up and move forward

What exactly was the cause of the fire? It seemed to start somewhere at the top. (I saw the video on the internet)

As I type this I am feverishly getting stuff for my son's elementary school costume parade...

A burned straw cowboy hat...check
Jeans to shred and burn the ends...got em
Ugly western shirt to get same burn treatment...looking tomorrow at thrift store
Men's size 7 boots...making some calls and might have to splurge

Friday, Big Tex lives on.

This will be surprising to Dallas area residents...because Fair Park is so well maintained and clean...but a defective outlet by his left boot sparked the blaze according to the news last night.

I suggested the same thing to my son for a costume, except I wanted to combine the cowboy with a human torch costume so that he had flames...he and his mother were offended. Told me that I only find humor in this because I am not a true Texan!

If "Big Tex" qualifies as a historical figure and a little fun at his expense is too taboo... It has nothing to do with being a "true" Texan.

As Tex was en fuego the Dallas Fire Department was knocking down one liners live on the radio, and it is still fodder for radio hosts here locally.

I have found that its best not to take the absurd seriously, but to each their own.

It's so big and ugly only a Texan could love it. While everything might be bigger in Texas, that sure doesn't make it prettier. :tongueout:
