So, tonight my church is having a big event with expected large crowds if it is anything like last year. It is going to be at a neutral site so that people will not feel unwelcome. It is an alternative to Halloween. We do it up as a celebration of fall harvest, kind of like Sukkot.

Went to the doc today (disc issues in my back still). On the way home, I decided to stop by the 45th Infantry Division Museum. It was cool. I took a crapload of pics with the cell phone (wasn't a planned trip, so no camera with). Some didn't come out so good, but still worth the trip.

Everything went well tonight. Good crowd, and all stayed peaceful concerning the visitors. Kudos tonight to Leavenworth County EMS for coming to the event, and staying all the way through. We had just enough homemade chili and hotdogs along with some other stuff to satiate appetites. It was all good, and I think we all had a good time ministering to the community.

Howdy guys! :wavey:

Been a little busy lately and haven't had much time to post. We got quite a bit of rain, wind and wet snow from Sandy. Our power was out for around 36 hours... In the midst of all of this we had low light qualifications. Nothing like shooting in the dark when it's 35 degrees and blowing rain/sleet!

I have mental image of Hack & co workers qualifying in middle of Sandy, bobbing up and down in the flood waters wearing life jackets tethered to a rope strung along the firing line, with only the tops of targets risng above the water. "Men, course of fire will be modified slightly today, head shots only." ;)

it's been a crazy week. We had a PO quit without notice because he won the lotto or some crap, and that left us picking up the slack. I was told not to even worry about keeping hours down as long as the work gets done.

Next week is my wife's birthday and I still haven't a clue on what we are going to do for the weekend, but I lined up a babysitter and I do not plan on being in the same area code, preferably time zone as my children. Split decision between wine tasting in Northwest Michigan, or something in Chicago area. Other suggestions?

It really saddens me to think this is what our country has become. We used to stand on principles and morals, we did what we felt was right because we were informed and because it's what we believed, not because it was popular. And we weren't so effing scared to get our hands dirty and do a little work. We didn't expect anyone to do for us, and we were alright doing for ourselves. We aspired to be better, now we just aspire to skate by. I really wanted to shed a tear tonight, not because Obama won. But because Obama won through the downfall of Americans as a whole. Lazy, ill-informed, with an entitlement attitude and deathly afraid of an honest days' work. What has become of this great country? That's why I wanted to shed a tear.

so Obama won, will be interesting to see what follows from a foreign point of view. He has lots of supporters here but I am not sure what to think about it. Have to say I do support free medical care, even more than just for life threatening situations, but the economical USA is an absolute mess. Being the world police is expensive but necessary, nonetheless there is too much industry connected to that in the US, that it seems it doesn't really matter who becomes the President.

The two party system also is not really a good idea when it comes to democracy.
I fear that the country is going down even more.

We are done. Done. This country will not be recognizable as it goes down that road.

People were bought off with promises of free stuff from other people's pockets. Entire populations, hoodwinked, and do not see the truth, of the socialism foisted upon them en masse, as they clap and cheer while liberty dies.

Keep the care packages. Be our sponsors when we apply for asylum to your country.

No insult to anyone out there, but foreigner support has no bearing on our presidential elections. It's our president, not the world president. What other countries like and don't like or want for us, is not necessarily what is good for us, and usually, it is not, because we are hated more than liked on the world stage by numbers of countries.

When Obama was touted as having support by China, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, etc., that was not a good thing, because those countries do not have our best interests at heart.

Obama is a weak president and other countries see it as weakness that we have him leading the world apology tour.

That's the truth. It seriously had me worked into a migraine; not fun. To say I'm disgusted with this country right now is an understatement.

Blame America, turn his back on Americans getting killed, say sorry for everything other people get mad about, bow to other leaders, this is not how my president acts. My president is strong and proud and stands up for America, no matter what.

Well, I got called to work overtime today (I'd signed up if they needed me to come in on my off day); they had 4 or 5 go out to the ER on daywatch today. So I hurry up and get ready and drive all the way in to the hospital (about an hour and fifteen minutes to an hour and a half), just to get told when I called to confirm where the guy was at that they managed to get guys covering him on straight time (by roster adjusting people), and they didn't need me after all. I got two hours of OT just for showing up, at least, but it's still annoying when I cancelled plans to do this then had to try to salvage what I could of them.

Tonight I went as watched my nephew and his band play in a battle of the bands competition. I'm not at all comfortable in places like that, but they played great and even won the round. Now they'll play Saturday night for all the marbles... well, actually just a guitar as the grand prize, but they could probably sell it for $1k so they'll have some rent money for a month. If you hate the way snow feels under your feet, you'd REALLY hate the way it feels on the end of a shovel... about 500 times in a row! Actually it's good relaxing work when it comes, but my old shoulder and back aren't up to it like they used to be.

The guitar has been pretty fun though. I've played since high school, but not much the last few years so it's kind of motivated me. My kid plays and totally loves the thing.

Downside is I looked up the value online and about crapped my pants. $2700. Kind of hard to justify keeping it just because the kid digs it when it could go to a lot of other stuff.

Oh well, you only live once huh?

My buddy did the same thing. Went to DEA and would call me all the time. He says he spends about 20 days straight sitting in his office playing solitaire, and then goes out 1 day to do a raid or a buy or whatever, and then sits around again until the next one. He says it's terrible.

I'm sure he's working cases but I get what he's saying... tons of desk time and not a lot of field time doing exciting stuff.

Yeah exactly. My friend Tracy worked a rural area outside of San Diego. So they just watched people. An informant would cough up a name and then they'd watch the guy until he did or didn't do something stupid.

At least in a patrol car you can create work for yourself if that's what suits you.

The pay, if they count my corrections experience as "sworn" experience (I am sworn; just some agencies don't want to acknowledge it as far as experience), will be roughly what I'm making now, plus a higher uniform allowance and $3,100/yr "state incentive pay", so that's not that big of an issue. It would mean the hiring process all over, and a 24 week academy plus 24 weeks of FTO, but overall, I think I'd be happier with it. I just realized I'd really rather work the street than inside the fence, or like y'all said earlier, even most of the federal-level investigative positions. So, I'm emailing one of their recruiting officers here shortly to see if my experience counts. Regardless, I think I'm going to do it within the next few months.

Dude, if I was +27 again, you know what I would be doing... which is... doing what I did back then... again... and having a blast while doing it too.

Seriously, you got a career, good head on your shoulders, just put yourself out there, and women will flock to you. A good guy is hard to find and they know it.

Too many losers out there with no real job, no goals, beat them, disrespect them, can't treat them right, etc. When a woman finds a good man, they know and latch on. That's actually what you have to be careful about more than not being able to find anyone.

I lost mine once, went to the ER and washed my hands. Was early on, the ring was kind of loose, so when I dried my hands with the paper towel, it came right off with the paper and ended up in the garbage.

Luckily I noticed it was missing as soon as I sat back down in the waiting room, and ran back to the bathroom to tear the garbage up and found it...

But that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when you think of what you're going to say to the wife... Contemplating it for real is bad enough, can't imaging having to do it for real...

Yeah, every once in a while we have a good hands-on that then gets watered down because someone got soemthing bent the wrong way. I know there is a risk in that kind of training, but can you imagine if football players only ever had contact in games and not practice? Boxers/MMA fighters?
What if firemen never.... oh wait, bad example.

Anyway, I don't think the first time someone pops you in the mouth should be when you're already on the job and in the middle of an incident. I'm not Billy Badass, but I've had my bell rung a few times and know what to expect next.

lawman800
11-20-2012, 19:40
I've said this before. If you don't get some full contact experience in ya, and you want to be a cop, you'll be in for a rude surprise the first time someone on the street pops you one or tries to fight you.

You can learn all the magical techniques and have a master tell you that if you punch here, he'll go there, then you kick here, then you grab there, and then twist here and he falls there... yada yada yada. It's all fun and games until you get popped the first time and you are like... WTF? That hurt!

Anyway, when we do FoF and go hands on, the instructors do wear the RedMan suits and we can go a little harder than usual. I've taken off an instructor's helmet with one blow under the chin. They had to call it after that, but at least I know it works.
