View Full Version : Recommend .45 ACP and 9 mm S-D Ammo...
Hi, guys! :wavey:
I've got a big ammo purchase pending...
In 2007 I paid $5.99 and $9.99 for fifty rounds each of 9 mm and .45 ACP practice ammo, respectively, and brought in several thousand rounds of both... I also ordered several hundred rounds of Double Tap in 9 mm, 10 mm, and .45 ACP self-defense ammo...
I'm also looking to cycle through my supply of Double Tap 9 mm, 10 mm, and .45 ACP ammo, and I know there have been great strides made in 9 mm Self-Defense Ammo (like Federal HST 147 Grain +P 9 mm), and I'd greatly appreciate any input and links to info and vendors!
Thanks, all!

Kyles Gun Shop, HST, Speer Gold Dot in 50rd boxes
Winchester Ranger 127 grain +P+ in 9mm and the Ranger in .45 also; or the HST in either seem well regarded. The Gold Dot in 9mm also has alot of fans and use.
9mm 124/127 gr +P/+P+
45 ACP 230 gr +P
Speer GDHP, Winchester Ranger T-Series, Federal HST
Personally I run;
9mm Winchester Ranger T-Series 127 gr +P+
in my G27 with a Storm Lake 40-9mm barrel and G26 mags.
They have been clocked at ~1240 fps from a G26.

And 45 ACP Winchester Ranger T-Series 230 gr P+ in my HK45C.

I'd say you should be good to go with any of the better known, street tested ammos. But as for purchasing, you can't go wrong with http://www.sgammo.com/

This, plus the 127gr +p+ Ranger T-Series equals awesome SD ammo at a price you won't be afraid to shoot every now and then at the range.

Stick with premium JHP Speer/Federal in bonded and non-bonded or Remington bonded ammo as a general rule and you can't go wrong.
tnoutdoors (http://www.youtube.com/user/tnoutdoors9/videos?view=0) has some excellent tests you can access to help in your search.

Ammunition Depot had the best price on Federal HST 9mm 147 Gr +P and .45 ACP 230 Gr + P:

Use promo code: preppertalk1 for 5% discount...
At over a dollar a cartridge, shipped, I see my days of shooting Double Tap's 10 mm 135 grain Noslers is coming to an end...

P.S. Here's some very nice practice .45 ACP ammo, with useful brass, at $16.99 for 500+ rounds... That's the same price as CCI Blazer...

to tell you the truth all the latest high tech ammo seem to do the job. Critical Defense seems to be the latest LEO fad. All are expensive, but then again you only need it for SD.

I like what I've learned about Hornady's Critical Defense ammo and am glad to see someone else mention it here. It is my current choice for SD ammo.
HST, Gold Dot or Ranger T in 124+P for the 9mm.
HST, Gold Dot or Ranger T 230 for the .45.
