The German government's gold reserves stored underground in New York have not been audited in 30 years and they are concerned..

Do they no longer fully trust the New York Federal Reserve?
There have been reports that German government officials were refused permission to "visit" their gold stash "for security reasons".
Hmmm.

I wouldn't trust it either. Didn't you see how Bruce Willis had to fight off the East German ex-patriots or otherwise the gold reserve would have been stolen!!!

Especially the past 15 years!

Bro, Obama is in office.

Kick back, relax.

Let the man hand you a check!

Let me tell you this - watching Bruce Willis and Samuel L Jackson kick some butt in NYC while sending your girl out with your EBT to buy Slurpees and Donuts from 7/11 is MY KINDA DAY (week/month/etc, it never ends)

In 2004 or 2005 I got the opportunity to take a "tour" of the NY Fed Reserve. I know nothing about any gold bar from any foreign country that might have gone missing soon after.

I don't understand why they would let us hold it in the first place.

Well, gold is one of the heavier elements in the periodic table. :whistling:

Well, when the world's economy really gets to SHTF, wouldn't it be better we're holding "their" gold than they holding our gold? After all, possession is 99-percent of the law... and gold is heavy... and needs to cross an ocean (or two) to get returned home.

And at the NY Fed Reserve, "their" is not only Germany!

No, the bars are there, but they're gold-clad and filled with tungsten.

A Bundesbank official says the reserve are not stored with some “dubious business partner," but respected bankers.

:rofl:They would be prudent to reconsider this, and take whatever they can back home.

Okay, I don't want to hear anymore complaining about Republican politicians saying something stupid.

Am I missing something? How did the German Gov't get US to store their gold? Its not like the Germans are in some African wasteland - why don't they store it on their own soil. To say nothing as to how it got there in the first place???

Depends on when it was stored. Remember for a long time Germans under the protection of the US with strong reason to fear invasion from the east.

I don't understand why they would let us hold it in the first place.

Because in the past foreign transactions were settled in gold, and often settled with US Central banks acting as the broker moving Country A's gold to Country B's vault, all in the same bank. When the world went away from gold, a lot of countries left their gold here.

This.

At one time, a country's wealth was based on the gold (and silver) standard. And after WW2, many nations in Europe and Asia were in fear of the Domino theory. So they elected to store their gold here.

Besides, during that era, normal banking practice was to offer every new depositor a free toaster! Who can resist that?

We have had a military presence in Germany since the mid 1940s.

I understand that the initial placement of troops on German soil was met with a bit of resistance.
