View Full Version : Win 231 and 230 FMJ
I am going to start using 231 tomorrow for the first time for .45 rounds. What are some loads that you are using. I was thinking of using around 5.4 and maybe run some at 5.6. Does this sound like a good starting point.
I been using 5.3 of 231 with a 230 grain hardball. Accurate as hell. I think 5.6 is close to max in some books.
Winchester 231 comes a few ways; perfect, really good and pathetic. It is my second favorite powder but working up loads is a patient mans game. Try some Ramshot Zip. Usually cleaner and more accurate, very similar to 231.
6.2gr is the max in the Speer book.
WIth a 230grRNFMJ o/ 5.7gr of W231 @ 1.1255" OAL, that makes about 840fps in a 5" 1911 or XD. Make sure you are loading FMJ & NOT plated. A plated bullet will want a bit less powder, between jacketed & lead data.
I wouldn't start at the mid 5s. If it were me, working up a new load for a gun I would start closer to 5-5.2 and work up in increments just to see what feels/shoots best in your pistol. Maybe you'll end up at 5.6, but you also could decide that 5.2 is just what the doctor ordered.
FWIW I load x-treme plated 230g with 5.1 of W231. It makes PF for IDPA in my 1911, but just so.
I am trying Clays and like it a lot so far.

5.2gr Win 231 + WLP + Rainier 230gr @ 1.265" makes ~750fps out of a G21
