View Full Version : Looking for first 1911.....

I am looking for my first 1911. I am not too familiar with what is what about them. I have done a lot of reading but like the internets always do, you hear the good, the bad, and the people that talk without having any knowledge on the subject. My goal is to spend about 1000 dollars on one. I know people talk highly about RIA for a cheapy, but I handled one then a springfield and the springfield felt way better for a few hundred dollars more. No one around me carries anything in stock other than Remington R1, RIA, Iver Johnson and STI. Ones I have really been wanting to check out are the S&W and Sig Sauers. I kinda have my eye on a Sig STX but am not familiar with their 1911's. Anyone have any first hand experience with Sig 1911's? Also are there any others out there for my 1k budget I should be looking at that aren't mentioned? My features I want are preferably stainless, must have a beavertail and decent sights.

This is the STX I have been eyeing pretty hard:

For a first 1911 I'd look at getting a more traditional design than sig and s&w. not saying they are bad at all, but If i5 was me I'd look at Springfield , sti and ruger. And add an updated design model like sig and s&w later

You don't have to spend 1k for a good 1911. The ruger is really nice and so is the Springfield range officer. I hear great things about sti Trojan and ranger

I just have one I ended up with 'accidentally' a handful of years ago. Yes, it's a Taurus. Haven't shot it much but has worked fine. There are some dedicated 1911 forums, .org & .com have a lot of specialized info posted.

STI would be a good choice.

if you'd be willing for forego beavertail, I'd recommend a Colt. Colt would give you a traditional, basic design, with a sold platform to "race-out" in case you wanted to add a lot of custom work. I have one a Series 80 and I love it. It has one thing no other 1911 will have: it is a Colt.

A step over that is probably the Springfield Range Officer. Also a great design, though a bit more modern. I've heard great things about it.

I'd stay away from the RIA or the R1. Not terrible guns, but you will outgrow them quickly, as you sound like a serious shooter.

If no dealer carries them nearby, you can always order online - this is becoming a more common and accepted way of getting what you need. Just my thoughts here. Good luck with choosing!

I'd look for a used Dan wesson heritage or trp. It's a little over your budget, but I think it'd be worth it If you're really wanting SS. The ruger sr1911 is pretty good, but I wouldn't spend a dime over 650 on one. Mine had a few different casting flaws and I had to send it back. The good news is, they have good customer service.

I don't have any experience with sig or S&W.

I'm sure they make a SS Springfield load and that would be a good choice too. I'm sure more will chime in, but these are the only ones that come to mind.

My first 1911 is a Sig RCS. I love it. I've only put 200-300 rounds through it but it hasn't hiccupped yet. And it was about $1000 out the door.

If it makes you smile, go for it. I don't own one, but Sig puts out quality pistols, so I doubt you'd feel like you made a mistake. I have Colts, STIs and a LBrown and like 'em all.
