Most will say cop, firefighter, president, pro baseball/football/etc., doctor, right?

Well what do you think an all black inner city 3rd grade class wants to be?
My dad works with someone whos wife works in a inner city school in Toledo OH. She ask them what they want to be. Every single one said they wanted to work at the gass station. She was surprised and asked them why. They said "so we can still get gov. benifts". :faint:
And we wonder what is wrong with America.

I used to go to the College Library and pencil copy reference texts, because I was too young to check them out.

I wanted to be a Police Officer.
I wanted to be just like Sky King!

GRIMLET

I wanted to be a medic
Maybe it was Gage and DeSoto on Emergency! back in the '70's

I wanted to be a soldier.
Maybe because we watched a LOT of John Wayne movies at our house, not to mention, my fathers military career.

I wanted to be a LEO.
Maybe because I watched Dragnet, The Andy Griffith Show and countless other LE themed shows.

Luckily, I have been all and am very grateful to live in a nation which allows me to choose my chosen direction in life.

I would think those youths described by the OP would rather want a rap/sports/dealer lifestyle.

I was influenced by the media growing up, why not them?

I'm really going to be depressed if there aren't at least a few posters in this thread saying how much they wanted to be an accountant.

I wanted to be an astronaut, president of the United States, a geologist, fighter pilot, engineer, inventor and rural delivery man for the post office. I was well on my way to realizing all my aspirations until I was thwarted by one thing: girls.

Beat me to it. When I was really thinking ahead, probably in 4th grade. Usually I probably wanted to be out of school playing.

I wanted to be in the NFL.

I was really wanting to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, or Dallas Cowboys... I was picky though, I was just too good to play for anybody like the Jets.

This many years later... I followed my dream and made the NFL thing happen for myself. I actually ended up with the Packers the past few seasons.

OK actually I took money from my Joe Schmo job and bought an XBOX and play Madden...but the excitement is still there ::supergrin:

A kid...with all the joy and wonder at what I had to learn. In reality I was already being prepped for adult life and had a long way to go educationally and life knowledge.

No regrets...just had a lot to learn as we all should and do.

OP.... Nice story. But your dad works with somebody, who's wife is a teacher in Toledo?

And every kid answered the question the same?

Please please let me know what your neighbor's, cousin's, dog trainer thinks about all this.

I skipped 3rd grade so can't really answer. In 4th grade I figured I would run my father's business one day. Silly me, he came home one day from work in 1973 and announced he'd sold the business. He said my brother and I showed no interest in it. Nevermind we were both WORKING on the production floor at the time. When we pointed this out to him he just shrugged his shoulders and got drunk.

Omg, me too. My brothers used to make jokes about pirate treasures and sunken chests up until I'd already started college.

In 3rd grade I wanted to be a lawyer. I did a research paper on baby Louise ( first test tube baby) and enjoyed it, and had a vague idea that lawyers did research.

Well, I married one.

I wanted to be an inventor scientist.

I later learned that science has (mostly) progressed beyond being Doc Brown in your garage and is now mostly done in some of the most soul-sucking environments on the planet.

I am applying the same passions elsewhere, though.

Fireman/Paramedic, my grandma let me watch EMERGENCY! reruns after she picked me up from school every now and then when my parents were working. Johnny and Roy got it done, but they never showed the calls we really go on.

I switched to Fighter pilot for a year or two but that one kinda faded.

Astronaut or "computer man". The astronaut thingy didn't work out, but I was a computer man. I got a home computer in the 7th grade, and by 8th grade, I was writing games for money.

Then I changed to Firefighter. Been doing it since 16 and professionally since 22.

A 4th grader.

Over in one reply

I was more of a firestarter than fighter
I liked wrestling but the WWF had not yet taken hold of me
I had already gone through the cop phase
If you had asked me a few years earlier I would have said boxer, because of Rocky, but I'd already figured out that only in movies do 2 white guys fight for the heavyweight title.

So the only thing left was army man. I grew out of that by 18 though.
