Hold my beer.....

Went from feeling bad about the carnage to glad I didn't have a mouth full of drink.

Well, if it wasn't a natural gas explosion, it was too big to be a Meth lab explosion. So, I suspect someone was playing with some ordinance and it didn't end well.

Wow, that picture is just scary. I hope that never happens in my area.

Nice suburban neighborhood just doesn't strike me as an HQ for a militia group.

It wasn't their home that actually blew up, it was the house next door.

About 40min after the blast, a police spokesman said natural gas was suspected, then they backed off that and said they don't know. That's pretty much been the official word since. NG has been cut off to the entire neighborhood while they try to figure out what happened. Discussed this pretty extensively with another GT'er today trying to figure out what happened (I live about 3mi from where it happened)

Way way way to big to be a meth lab.

NG seems the most likely possibility, but there had to be a LOT of gas in that house for that to happen on that scale. Those houses don't have basements to my knowledge, so I doubt a basement was "sealed off" and basically turned into a big NG bomb. Any natural gas leak would have a significant odor, not to mention, the house is still going to ventilate a significant amount of the gas.

Considering most residential gas pipe sizing in the city, is going to be anywhere from 1/2in, to 1in inside the house.... it obviously wasn't the "house" gas lines that caused this. The "city" gas lines, typically can be about 8-10in.. which I imagine could probably do something like this.... but i have no idea "how" it would have happened.

Tragic situation for sure.

I live about 10 miles from there and it was a very large thunder like boom at my house.

The speculation is that the gas had been leaking in the empty house for awhile and it filled up most of the inside and that the larger pipes were not the cause:wavey:

It just seems like most of the gas would have gradually seeped out before building up that much that some ignition source caused that.

We were asleep when it happened. It woke us up, and I don't know if it was because we were asleep or what, but... I figured a transformer blew. Then I started hearing a bunch of sirens, etc.. Even at that point, it didn't dawn on me they were going to "the noise".. I figured they were headed to a bad car accident or something.

Being that it was in your home town is what probably hit a nerve with you. Believe me, there is senseless death on the news here too every night, and I see some of it first hand. I don't grieve about it, I just move on. Maybe I'm just paralyzed to it at this point.
