Anybody got experience loading with this combination? I have a good idea where to start but didn't realize the spread between min. and max. were so far apart. Obviously any information gotten from here will be cross checked and I will start 10% below any loads and work up to them.
I am going to get my dies set up and deprime/ resize/ reprime while I wait to see if I get any responses.
Thanks,
Rob

I haven't used Sierra bullets but I have loaded 185gr. tc jacketed bullets over 6.5gr. of Unique loaded to 1.200"oal.

It's a good accurate soft shooting load.

Well where do you want to go? Unique is a good choice for max loads w/ the 185gr bullet but for lower vel, you want a bit faster powder for best results.

I just want target loads using these bullets. They came with the Dillon. I have enough money into 9mm and 10mm right now. I also need to know if the damn cases with SP's in them affect the load data.

Depending on which LP SP primers you use, you can expect to lose 20-30 or so FPS with SP. It makes sense...the SP have less primer compound in them, so they contribute less to the gas pressure.

Have used unique with great results, also wst for great practice rounds.

6gr of Unique, maybe 850fps, may burn a little dirty there. I wouldn't go any lower.

Alliant website says 8.2gr. of unique as max. If I reduce by 10% as a start at 7.4 I am going to start there and work up.

I've run this load at 7.2 Unique and it moves a Remington 185 grain HP along at a good clip, for me, not a target load.

Check these pages out, Doc has 7.2 unque as a max load with a 185 grain JHP JSP.
http://www.reloadammo.com/45loads.htm

I got 975 avg FPS checking my note book with this load

I'll pull the test loads I have worked up and start over. Not a big deal. I'll start at 6.2gr and maybe work up to 6.5gr and see what happens. That should give me a good target load. This is why I never load more than ten test rounds when I start.

I use a lot of this in about everything pistol I shoot/load for, old guy, started with Unique:)LOL
The new stuff is a lot cleaner than what we old guys started with.
5.8 to 6.2 should give you a good decent load with 185 grainers with a good solid crimp.

Problem i syou can not get a "good solid crimp" taper crimping the 45acp. Unique will run @ low pressures, but just doesn't burn well there; unbruned powder & huge vel spreads. I would not go below 6gr, if you want less vel, drop to a faster powder like W231.

I use this combo myself, with a LOT of Unique, too much to list here. A really snappy round!!
