While detouring around an accident, I was rear ended by a fully loaded work van. Dude said he hit the brakes and they failed. Four inch intrusion into my trunk, his van fared much much worse, tore off his bumper, ripped out a headlight, bent the hood and part of the frame bent under into the wheel. Ford Fusion > crappy Chevy van.

I got a free ride to the ER, on a backboard which should be registered as a torture device. Nothing broken, neck and back sprained real good, doc says to expect to feel way worse the next few days, and rest a lot. Got good drugs, will try not to drug post. Much. Just sayin'.

My mom was in a similar accident, though there was hardly no damage to either vehicle. She started feeling pain in her neck/back a week or so later.

I got ice, ice, baby!! I will switch to heat in a day or so.

I am not mad, I know it was an accident, but I wouldn't be shocked to learn he was texting or looking down or something.

Also, cause it was a twisty two lane rd they couldn't get the stretcher right up to me, so I had to stand up, lean against the backboard and do a trust fall  I am not a skinny woman. That was possibly the scariest part of the whole thing! Maybe of my life! I was sure they were gonna drop me and wipe themselves out.

God! first the deer and now.......Sorry, hope you feel better soon.

I feel for yah. In the 1960's I was rear-ended and it shortened my Plymouth 4-door's frame 18" (by a Cadillac at over 100).

Anyway, I had a big bruise on my lower back and over 50 years later I have times when I can't walk without bed rest.

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE the possibility of soft tissue damage. It takes a while to resolve problems.

I do find relief at the worse times via Relafen. About a dozen in as many years.

Side note: I was buying earrings for the G'daughters and I wondered if you ever tried to make short chain maille strands for earrings? Just a thought.

My fault, I shouldn't have worn my ears to the office Christmas party. :p

Ok, so I slept very poorly last night, was up every two hours or so. On top of everything, my cough was acting up, and coughing hurts to begin with, even on a good day, so that sucked.

As long as I stay on top of the meds, it's not horrible, but I'm definitely not pushing things because I can really feel it when it wears off.

I haven't felt too loopy, but apparently I sent all sorts of incomprehensible texts and emails while just utterly exhausted. Been dozing on/off all day, just ate and will prob doze again. I figure if my body wants to actually sleep I'm not gonna argue w it.

My wife got rear-ended about 9 days ago. The other driver (lady) fessed up to it as her fault, right away. To help things along--my wife and the other driver are both insured by the same company.

My wife called our insurance agent right away and we got the car in to be checked/repaired. Also, our agent said to go ahead and start the Chiropractic and Massage therapy treatments right away and to send the bills to his office.

FYI, our Chiropractor (a neuro-muscular chiropractic specialist) said that the bad effects take about 7 days to fully manifest in most cases. Wife agreed with that--she went in for the first chiropractic treatment and then went for her massage treatment in the afternoon.

Our chiropractor is akin to a "rock star" within the chiropractic world because he has doen so well with his specialty and he is highly requested whenever chiropractors have workshops and seminars to advance their professional abilities.

Following my wife's first adjustment by the chiropractor, his secretary blocked out times for up to the next 6 weeks--if required. We do not give a second thought to him over booking her appointments. He simply does not need the additional business and he is a consumate professional.

With respect to the massage therapy, my wife said that the chiropractor wants the massage people to work on her neck because it is so tight that the chiropractor could not make a decent adjustment for my wife's neck.

Based upon some prior experience, we already know that whenever you get a lot of chiropractic adjustments and/or massage therapy done, you are dislodging a lot of "junk" that has been locked up in your tissues and or joints--so you also need to drink lots of water to flush that stuff out of your body.

Mrs. VR, be sure to holler if you want to know anything about my wife's treatments or any suggestions that may be helpful for you as well.

It just seems like quite a coincidence that your unfortunate event happened just as the therapy for my wife's similar event has begun.

We both wish you well---do not hold back on getting all of the necessary treatments to get you back to normal.

Please heal well and quickly!!

Mrs. VR

Thanks all!

Random southpaw, I was just saying to my husband that I probably need to schedule some time with out PT/Chiro/massage people. I think it might mae better sense insurance-wse to see the back guy first and let him confirm the need for PT, rather than self referring. My head is better but my back feels worse again. I hope your wife heals quickly.

whoever said it may take a week to realize the extent of stuff....last night my jaw was bugging me some. It woke me up at 3am with excruciating pain. A visit to my dentist this afternoon confirms I fractured a molar. I guess i snapped my teeth together pretty hard.

I'm seeing a diff dentist in the practice monday morning to see if it's salvageable with a root canal. in the meantime, i I am medicating, putting ice and heat on my face and randomly sobbing. I HATE DENTAL STUFF. I burst into tears at the dentist, and I think i scared the techs. I"m just really really not a fan of all things dental work related.

in the meantime, i heard the quote for the car damage today. I'm not sure if it's ok for me to post until things are settled, etc, so i wont say a number, I'll just say it was not an insignificant amount of damage. I'm still not MAD AT the guy, but I"m feeling less zen about it as the week progresses. And i have little sleep. and I accidentally bite down on this tooth. :faint:

Thanks. The pain meds are helping a lot with the tooth especially. I'm thankful for that, although it wore off in my sleep so I woke up at 6:20 this morning feeling pretty terrible. I'm considering setting an alarm tonight so it doesn't get to that point again. I also pulled out my dreaded night guard and am keeping it in my mouth 24/7 to keep my back teeth from touching. It's uncomfortable but beats the heck out of the alternative!

I got a free ride to the ER, on a backboard which should be registered as a torture device. Nothing broken, neck and back sprained real good, doc says to expect to feel way worse the next few days, and rest a lot. Got good drugs, will try not to drug post. Much. Just sayin'.The days follwing an accident are always worse as the shock and adrenaline are gone and the injuries have time to set in. I have unfortunately been there on several occasions. I have chronic back problems from mine that can only be treated with pain management which I refuse as all it involves is pain killers and anti inflammatories. My problems tend to get aggrivated every 6 months or so leaving me almost unable to function. When this happens, I see the chiropractor for several weeks until everything settles down to a tolerable point and start the cycle over again. Thankfully it appears this will not be the case with you, but the next several weeks are going to suck even with the pain meds.

As far as the backboards, I have to agree. My most recent accident, fortunately in 1998, sent me to the hospital on the board with a neck collar. It was absolute misery. Stupidity on my part, but I did not have my seatbelt on as I was just going down the street from where I was. I ended up hitting a deploying airbag then going over it to hit the windshield with the back of my head. I didn't realized there was a small piece of glass in the cut digging into the board until I was in the ER. One of the most painful things I have ever been subjected to. It could have been far worse though considering the lack of a seatbelt in the equation. Needless to say, lesson learned.

Hope you feel better soon.

I survived a minor motorcycle accident many years ago, but 5 months later my back went out. No doubts about cause and effect. Yes, I did land on my head. How did you guess?:uglylol:

I think you have about 2 years to settle or sue, but ask an ex-lawyer to be sure.

Don't try to tough it out. Back injuries have repercussions that show up much later. Seek all the medical help you can.

Very true, no evidence of injury.......until there is.:faint:

well, i saw the periodontist today. Tooth is coming out on the 28th (to allow me time to taper my prednisone), unless the pain gets significantly worse in which case they are not waiting. :sigh: Because of it's location, he wont do the implant part at the same time as the extraction and bone graft, so it's going to stretch things out, meaning we are looking at a long wait before we can settle.

I'm seeing the ortho on thursday about the back spasms.

on the good side, i've lost like 5 lbs since the accident. I guess not being able to chew has it's uses.

You know your periodontist, so perhaps no need to question the bone graft. However I was told the same thing by one, saw another one who is a well-known implant specialist in my area...teaches, lectures, etc. He was adamant...you don't need a graft, you just need for the body to heal itself. Tooth was extracted and I waited and all went well. Went to a different doctor for my daughter (born without lateral incisors). She had the baby teeth, but no adult teeth followed. Genetic defect on my wife's side of family  Anyway, she was told something similar...just wait, no graft needed.

Just tossing it out there for your consideration...which you may have already looked into.

Good luck!

I hope this is all behind you soon, ma'am, and you can get back to being your usual, sunny self that we all know and love and --- yes, we fear you as well.

Wow ...I've been so busy over the last week that somehow I missed out on your saga. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

However, I am enjoying your drug-enhanced posting.

Finally got my car back tonight. Smells like paint fumes, but it looks so pretty! Guy said " looked like he hit ya pretty hard!". Gee, ya think?

Tooth is holding steady for the most part, i just REALLY have to keep my night guard in overnight and not chew on the right side. I'm torn between dreading the extraction and just wanting it over with.

I saw the ortho, and I'm starting pt ths week. He said expect it to be another month before I feel totally normal. ( well, normal for me!)

It really does take time. Keep up with the PT as it will definitely decrease your recovery time.

I had the back spasms as well. They were just brutal because they would come go out of no where.

Also, make a list of all your appointments and physican's names for settlement time.

Hush you. Baaaaad Night. Woke up a lot. Heat helps. Right now it feels like I went a few rounds with Ali before Parkinson's! I am sure tomorrow will be better. Trying to sleep as much as possible. My biggest concern is that the gortex won't stick and I
Up a creek. The reason a graft was necessary is that my tooth/bone structure are very thin to start with as a consequense of havi g such small spaces ( yes I know, haha).

Wow. hope you are feeling better soon. I had a similar accident in 1991, rear ended by a Doctor I worked with, he was doing about 55 when he ran into me, stopped in traffic. I ended up in the back seat with the trunk, which was also in the back seat.

I hurt every day, but I'm functional.

It will take a while to feel normal. Heat is your best friend. I tended to save the pain meds for only at night, and toughed through it during the day. I was NCOIC of a narcotics vault at that time. Didn't want to be on them any longer than I had to be.

Best wishes. Do what your physical therapist asks you to do, even the homework.
