I have seen that a few times, he really trust his equipment but I don't think it would be that hard to do. Everything locks in place but it would be real bad if just one part of any of it failed.

Good heavy equipment operators are a joy to watch. Good engineering in the tower, the pads that lock the treads when the weight goes on them don't look that big, just big enough. The only thing I would worry about would be if you broke a track or had a hydraulic failure while way out from the tower.

Or the engine quits.

He did not appear to be a terribly great operator.

The mechanic said I'd blown a seal
I said, "Fix the damned thing and leave my private life out of it."

The machine is built for climbing the tower. It is always mechanically locked to the tower. The hydraulics have lock valves on all the cylinders so if the engine stops or a hose blows it wont fall.
