SA Scout Squad, bone stock, brand new, unfired for 3 years.

Got a burr up my butt a while back to do something with it and then got side tracked. The burr is back.

Not looking for a max trick out. Don't want to leave stock. Trying to decide what I want to make it.

Open to ideas if anyone wants to offer any.

I bought one and I'm very happy with it.
Money pit? Only if you want the accuracy of a bolt action rifle. Love it for what it is a Military Rifle with 2 to 3 MOA accuracy.
Do what you can do to tweek it a bit, Buy a second stock and have it fill two roles with a nice Sadlak Scope mount.
I like mine, just hate the haters right back by enjoying it.

Thanks for the info. This is kinda where I was torn. Bring it back and put traditional glass on it or leave it forward and put an aimpoint. I've got one of the scopes you mention laying around with some others

I agree with the trigger job.

Well, how do you plan to use it? Shooting from a bench for tight groups? Running and gunning? Punching holes in paper? Or all of the above?

Yeah I know, right? :faint: Not sure. That was the point of the thread. Trying to figure out what to set it up for. If I had a purpose for it it wouldn't have been sitting unused for 3 years.

I'm not a big rifle guy. This was an impulse buy when I stumbled on it. What can this gun be good at?

So I thought about it some more and unless someone gives me an idea to get excited about I think the primary use for this gun will be laying on a blanket punching paper. Therefore I'm thinking byf43's direction. Mount existing glass on the sadlak mount, bipod.

byf43 or faawrenchbndr - any particular bipod?

I've got an AO Weaver dot reticle 36x scope laying around too. I think it would be fun. Wonder how it would hold up? I've only used them on rimfire before.

It's an M1A, it can be good at whatever you want it to be good at (within reason of course). I've always had a special place in my heart for the M14/M1A so I'll admit I'm a little biased.

Based on your answer I'm going to assume you just want a general blaster to have fun with. My advice, all you need to do is throw an Aimpoint on it and it will do anything you need it to do. With some trigger time you could be hitting man sized targets at 500 yards with that set up.

General blaster is a good descriptor.

They are money pits if you make them more than what they really are. A battle rifle.

About the only thing I've added is an XS 24/7 tritium stripe front sight.

Have you considered an FAL? G3/PTR? 16" N6?

stocks?

If you dont want to spend $1000 on a stock but still want adjustability take a look at these options. I have one of these and its got alot of bang for the buck. Oh yeah and its made in the USA. No its not superninjafied aluminum & titanium but at $300 theres no way it could be at its price point.

Aimpoint Pro.

It's got a 2 moa dot and 30000 hour battery life, all for $400 msrp but can often times be found for $350 ish. You won't find a better dot for that price.

Stick a govt 3x9 on it and pour money into ammo ...become a superlative marksman with it. That will be more impressive and useful than any crap you can bolt onto it.

Im minute of beer can at 200 yds w mine and have also taken a deer with it. Full size model w birch stock, cleaning kit scope and extra 20 rounders....thats it.

Great. Right now, today, I wanna buy something for it because I wanted to go to the range and couldn't get out of the house in time.

So I ordered the aimpoint.

I won't deny that I have enough mass to absorb a significant amount of recoil.

M1A is a curious choice for that application. QUITE CURIOUS INDEED...

I just brought it out to play in a 3-Gun match for poops and grins...unlike all those wussies with their puny ARs. :tongueout:

Have you considered an FAL? G3/PTR? 16" N6?

I love the looks of the FAL, but every time I put one to my shoulder it just doesn't feel right. I've shot an H&K91 and I just like the M1A better. There weren't really any AR-style .308s on the market back when I bought it.

With the sights on it as is, I say, do some competition with it...as is. Hi Power, 3 gun, whatever. After a few thousand rounds downrange you should become sorta, almost proficient with it.

Wood or synthetic stock? Heavy little buggers with the wood, but it does help.

Gas valve setup? Might consider playing with that if need be.
