I live in one of those "recently built neighborhoods in what was rural land before it got sold & developed". i.e. across the street outside the subdivision is cow pasture and lots of cattle...at least lots for a city person like me. I just got home from running an errand, and when I got to the entrance to our neighborhood, I saw a uniformed city police officer walking the side walk on the edge of the neighborhood holding his pistol. I stopped along side him, rolled the window down, and asked what was going on. He said he was investigating gun shots. When I got to the house, I went out back and didn't just hear gun shots...it sounded like a shooting match. I've heard what I thought were shots before, but usually its just a few slow one. This was lots of rapid shots, possibly multiple different firearms (calibers) judging by the difference in some of them, and most sound big.

I know there's a Lion's club turkey shoot going on, but it's a few miles down the road in the opposite direction this fire sounds like it's coming from. I actually wonder if it's another group having their own turkey shoot on some non-developed land, and they don't realize they're inside city limits.

Other than calling the PD and bugging them about it, is there a way to find out whatever they found? If I did call and ask about it, would they likely tell me?

The worst they can do is tell you to mind your own business and hang up on ya, leaving you in the same situation you are in now, wondering what's going on.

If you call & identify yourself (name, address, phone number) they're more likely to give you the info.

I wouldn't worry about it.

If it happens again, then you can be reasonably sure that it's just people having a good time.

I don't think that meets the hunter orange requirement.

How can the City extend their limits into the country? It's either the city or not.

If they don't tell you, just file a FOIA request.

Hell, if you want something done right, do it yourself. Next time, when the firing starts, just walk towards that direction and see for yourself what's happening.

If you call up the police, give your name, where you are, say that you heard the shots close by and want to know what is going on since it was so close to you, they might be willing to give up more info. There is such a thing as a freedom of information act, but I don't know anything about it, other than saeeing "Such and such got this info by the freedom of information act" on news articles. So it might not be of any help what so ever, but you might want to do some research and see if that will help get the info you want. I don't know if it will or not, like I said, I don't know much about it, I've just heard that it might be a way to get information that otherwise wouldn't normally be given with a normal request.
