Im all for motorcycles, theres nothing better, wish there were nothing but 2 wheel personal transport but these moped drivers are C R A Z Y.
For some reason they prefer the inside lane of super wide general access major highways where there are 3,4 or 5 lanes all traveling at over 65....except them. There they are, shrieking along, leaning over the handlebars at their top speed of a governed 35, no helmet, no license, no insurance and no care about anyone else on the road.....see all the red brake lights and the cars swerving to the right ahead? ...its a moped.

Whats wrong with these people?????????????

Actually, they're scooters. Unless it has pedals, it's a scooter.

Not if they cannot maintain a speed that is the stated minimum speed. In your state on major highways I believe it is...40mph?

They are pulling them over here if they are blocking traffic or causing a dangerous situation. Don't know if they are being ticketed or not.

I haven't been privy to the moped wave sweeping the country. What did I miss?

Heck, I don't think I've seen one since 1979.

It's been awhile since I've last seen a real Moped.
All laws and statutes that governs the use thereof refers to them as 'Mopeds' yet the current crops are not really mopeds.

As opposed to all the perfectly sane sport bike riders who dangerously weave in and out of traffic at high speed or perform wheelies on city streets.

I see mopeds around here fairly often. They're usually to the far right along the stripe, almost like bicycles are supposed to be. I have no issues with them.

All I know is that the last couple years mopeds have been ALL over my town. Everyone seems to have one. Whats really funny is that there is a group of about 8 or 9 kids, probably 16-17 years old. They ride them around town in a group like a motorcycle club. They act like little hard asses. Its the funniest damn thing Ive ever seen.

They are all over Athens. One time I saw the entire UGA football team riding them at once, lol. I cant stand mopeds, they are so dangerous due to their lack of speed and acceleration.

On a side note, it is hilarious to watch them go up a big hill near my house. I love it when a person on a moped gives me the biker wave when im riding. I just stare at them like they are crazy when they do it, especially if i have my mirror visor down.

Which car exactly? Id love to see that in person, because the 50cc scooter/mopeds that i see seem to top out at 45 mph. Nothing like hearing the high whine of a scooter running close to max rpm's at just a little above inner city speed limits. Econo cars back then werent near as fast as ones these days, but at least they could reach interstate speeds.

Here is a Honda Reflex scooter ( I don't really consider anything over 50cc a scooter , they are really small displacement motorcycles IMO ) 250cc at the Horizons Unlimited meet up. It has been all over literally.

That's what happen when you ride Japanese, Taiwanese and ChiCom junks. Italian 50-cc mopeds can crack 50+ in stock form and maybe a few more with minor mods.

Maybe the capability was there for higher speeds, but, we followed one of these in the left lane that was pacing alongside a Tractor trailer rig doing 45 MPH on a divided Hwy for 20 miles, and backing up traffic , before he decided to pass and use the right lane.

Some states do not require a driver's license to ride a moped so they're perfect for those with suspended licenses. Scooters on the other hand require not only a license but a class M endorsement if it lacks pedals. HH

I hate that our country is becoming a third world crap hole where people have to ride those stupid machines to get to work or the store. Pretty soon you will have hordes of them with mom and dad and three kids on them. Or guys hauling bricks or cement blocks to job sites on them because that's all they can afford.

I had one in 1986. First generation called a Chevie Sprint, made by Suzuki, Japan. 2 dr, 5sp, NO A/C, 12" wheels with top speed close to 70MPH. Resembled a tin can on wheels.

Got a consistent 54MPG on the highway.

Still sought after in my area.

I know dozens of people who ride them because they get well over 100 mpg, require no tags, registration, insurance or class M endorsement. I don't think the joke is on them... HH

'Round here, the riders of these miniature speed-bumps are mostly grim faced dui recipients ...when you see a guy riding one of those in the middle of winter, a semi-permanent grimmace frozen into his expression, he ain't just saving gas....

I have seen many nearly get killt on the roads here, they are smaller by far to a motor-cycle , which are difficult to see , also....

A nuisance, they are....but, ya gotta get around, so most try to be careful near them...

I've seen one of these Aholes cut through a parking lot, and jump onto a sidewalk and zip across the crosswalk just to avoid waiting at the red light. He had to be doing at least 30mph on the sidewalk.

Here is an image I took off google maps to show the sign in the window. I also enlarged the sign a bit.

I was following some college girl on a scooter a few weeks back. I was on my bike and she pulled up next to me in the lane, I let her go first when the light changed. I shot her a weird look because she was wearing gym shorts and a tank top. She shot me a weird look because I had a riding jacket, full face helmet, gloves, jeans, ect on.

She low sided when she tried to take a right hand turn at 30mph through a very crappy intersection. I was laughing so hard; but I stopped to help her pull her scooter out of the road.

There are easily several hundred scooters in my town, never once have I seen anyone even close to being properly dressed for two wheels at an even moderate speed.

OP, I once had the displeasure of being talked into having someone on a scooter follow me to a particular parking lot, which once there, we would take my vehicle to the beach. I had to keep pulling over and waiting. The max speed limit for the roads I used was 45 mph, and yet, the scooter couldn't stay with me doing 30. Although frustrating for me to keep pulling over to the side of the road and waiting for it to catch up, I did wonder how the people in the 'slow scooter caused traffic jam' I saw in the rear view mirror felt. Now I know.

Those things are great for those High School and college students not caring when they get to their destination.

I putt-putted it up Mount Baldy and then let gravity helped me go downhill on Glendora Mountain Road. I hate to say it, but I could have passed any sport bike. The road was so tight that whenever I was my bike at any speed at all, I'd be gritting my teeth. The damn scooter is so light and agile that I wouldn't need much to flick it from corner to corner. Wasn't even close to leaning it over.

Maryland law requires them (50 cc max) to be insured and registered. Mva issues a decal to stick on the rear fender that can't be removed like tags. Not sure if the operator needs a driver lic or has a age min. The law has cut thefts of scooters and the amount of them on the road by haft. Now, in Baltimore city.... It's the Wild West.

I dont know how they get away with it but I personally know one person who rides a 150cc scooter and have heard of others that do the same yet they have them registered as 49cc scooters not requiring insurance or motorcycle endorsement. This is in Florida by the way and we have the anything under 50cc law.
