View Full Version : Profanity
Is it just me, or do you find the use of profanity as distasteful as I do?
I try to surround myself with quality people, so I find it difficult to listen too or read profanity. I unconsciously equate it to individuals of low character, morals, and intelligence. I understand in the real world I may be wrong a fair amount of time, but in the eyes of the beholder, “Perception is Reality.”
Thoughts?

I know some exceptionally fine people that curse like ******* sailors
Surrounding yourself with people that you deem "quality" based on the words they use, is a recipe for heartache. Thinking that 'perception is reality' is beyond dangerous, moving into the foolish area, when judging "quality".
That said, I don't mind profanity in the least around a campfire with a bunch of beer guzzling buds out for fun. In a local mall, not so much

I don't think it's acceptable in most circumstances.
When I was discharged from my first Army tour, way back in 1978, I had the bad habit of using profanity. It took a few months to correct it. I was saying F this and that to everyone. Not a good thing.
I think it's also a sign of weakness, especially amongst younger folks who try to be 'cool'.

WTF dude! Are you saying that I am some type of f€£^%#¥ low life who has the morals of two bit w{*%[? Or that I am some under educated f&}~ tard. Just kidding, as I get older it seems the colorful language is getting worse and I hear more women than ever using it. But I do not judge them or have a standard by which I hold them, due to their vocabulary.

I agree.
There are outstanding people that can make their Mother blush. I have issues overhearing it, or reading on forums. Once I see or hear it, my brain shuts down and I could care less what is stated afterwards.
Perhaps it’s the lack of respect it implies. Curse around your friends and buddies. I, however, am not one of them, so a little common politeness would be appreciated.
Bhaaaa… perhaps Im just in a ranting mood. ( I missed nappy time)
I am horrible. I guess I get it from my father, he can't say good morning without a couple bombs in there someplace.

Well, there are times that no other word can properly relay the sentiment.

… as the sole requirement, YES. Words are only one of many a person can use to get “vibes.”
That said, I don't mind profanity in the least around a campfire with a bunch of beer guzzling buds out for fun. In a local mall, not so much
agreed.
Amongst adults, I could give a ****. Around families and kids, just be respectful of your surroundings.
A lot of people correlate profanity to blue collar people, but you'll hear it just as much amongst white collar execs
Some of the most elegant speakers are some of the biggest thieves and scumbags you can find.
Judging someone by their language is not very productive. For decades people from the north thought that Southerners were uneducated based on the tendency of Southerners to speak slowly and with a "drawl". . .

I find your fear of words distasteful
For me, common profanity is neither here nor there. Use it, don't use, I can ignore it or acknowledge it.
That being said, I do enjoy someone who can use profanity effectively, like a master painter using a brush, in a given situation. It is an art that I just never could master...........
Well, there are times that no other word can properly relay the sentiment.
No doubt.

Sorry, but when I hit my fingers with a hammer by mistake, I am going to cuss. Please don't come over for dinner if you don't like it.
My wife doesn't like the fact that I use "profanity". I got it from the culture of my career choice. Sometimes that is all some scroatbags understand.
I use it in the proper context and environments so WTF do I care?
It's funny you bring this up. Ollie North spoke at our church this past weekend and talked about all the soldiers he knew that cussed yet prayed and carried a Bible around. Go figure.
I also walk around the house in my underwear and on rare occasions, you might catch me picking my nose. :whistling:

Around adults I use profanity without a care, around kids that's not acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

I cuss like a sailor and have no regrets or shame about it. But I also know context is paramount. When at work or in a setting where it's not appropriate I moderate my language out of respect for the context I may be in not for the people within the context with me.
When the need arises I can be quite articulate and eloquent in my speech, but in many cases I choose not to utilize these skills as it sets the stage of keeping people wondering. And it sure is fun for me to keep people wondering "what the hell?!"
So when they make the false assumption of my character, intellect or cranial capacitance to communicate beyond the low brow level I have the upper leg on them. Generally they find themselves rethinking their original assumptions after a very brief dialog.
Either way... doesn't really bother me all that much. Then again I also see being told how I need to clean my language up as yet another attempt to control my right to speak freely, just one more aspect of political correctness.
Profanity is interesting. I've read all cultures have the concept of profanity. It's odd to me though that certain words are arbitrarily deemed inappropriate or even sinful to some. Why is damn a curse word but not dang? Or **** but not poop? There must be some instinctive need to have curse words; why else would most every culture have them?
To me it depends on where and which words. In some situations sh** may be acceptable but ******* is not.

I love swearing as a form of expression, but it does lose it's effectiveness when overplayed. Some words hold a great deal of impact when used by an "artist" as Kilrain mentioned. I do try to curb it around kids and in certain mixed company. In honor of this thread: ******l blood fart.

Cursing eh.. I rarely r to never do, but I'm just saving it for when I really mean it.
Over using it is what annoys me and waters it down..
If you use it all day, when you're really mad you won't have anything good to say.

Like everything, it has its time and place. The vast majority of the time, I have no problem with it. There are certain instances where it will give me pause, cause me to give the speaker's thoughts less weight, or maybe even cringe a little.
For instance, I can't stand to hear my wife say the "F word". That's one of the cringe inducing uses. Folks that make a religious point followed with a string of "bad words" lose a lot of credibility in my eyes.
One one hand, I find it ridiculous that words can be considered "bad". Why is "heinie" okay, but "ass" is a curse word? The same can be asked of "heck" and "hell". On the other hand, though, I do react to the words like they have an inherent evilness to them in certain situations.
I curse a lot... in my head. But I consider it a point of pride that my wife and kids have never heard me swear. Weird disconnect, I know, but there you have it.
Then there's my 'neighbor'. He's a sometimes visitor to his trash heap of a lot. It bugs me that even though he's 200 yards away I can clearly hear his f'n this and that and various other expletives. Come on.

if you whack your thumb with a hammer, no one expects you to say "golly, that stings!"
but if you can't go a couple sentences without dropping bombs, you should probably expand your vocabulary.

Well, there are times that no other word can properly relay the sentiment.
Exactly.
Not to mention, they are just words. The social stigma put on them is rediculous. I find it more disheartening that someone, such as you, OP, actually fall victim to the associated beliefts that words are bad.
I say what I want, but respect those around me. Example: I may tell a story during Christmas dinner with the whole family present. If it adds to the story, I'll use the word "s___". However, I would not utilize the "f-word" at a Christmas dinner (or any other time with my mother present).
I bow to social stigmas, too. But only because it seems polite and respectful in some places. :embarassed:
I unconsciously equate it to individuals of low character, morals, and intelligence.
That is the wrong !@#$%^& way to *&^%$#@ judge people. It makes you look like a ^%$#*&# !@#$%.
Your friends of "quality" might shock your prissy sensibilities.:wavey:

Don't really care...they're just words. I know some pretty intelligent people (smarter the general population) that curse like anybody else...it doesn't seem to be making them dumb.
As far as myself, some days I can't go without cursing every other word...other days I'm pretty tame. Depends on the mood.
(And if you think hanging around people that don't curse means they are "quality" friends...be ready for the disappointment)

I curse like a ****in sailer. Dunno why, just started in the oilfield, continued through construction, driving a truck and now as a (private) CO.
The residents at work know they've pushed my buttons enough when they hear "Are you ****ing kidding me?" come outta my mouth.
But I can moderate my language and have quite a large vocabulary, I just don't use it much, I get tired of the blank stares.

It's the darn worst habit I ever had. I try everyday to watch myself and I regret the times that I use profanity. Wished I never swore in the past, it took me watching/hearing my own brother talk and cuss that made me realize this.

If you can't be profound, be profane. Lol
I used to be terrible. Then one day I just stopped. Can't stand to hear it much. That said, based only upbringing, I will toss in a few D's S's and such in a week. My moms influence. Lol
2movie notes:
1. I have My Cousin Vinny on DVD. Won't watch it unless its on TV. Swearing ruined that movie.
2. I have the Rocco F scene of Boondocks Saints running thru my head on this thread. Lol

I don't do it much. I think it all has a time and place. If I am working on something, playing a video game.... that's when I cut loose. In public, I keep it under wraps. I guess socially the anytime I will use profanity is if I am telling a joke (in an appropriate situation).

Highly intelligent and moral people can still swear. /thread
I swear and curse, doesn't bother me any when others do it around me. It's just part of the english language, and I don't see any reason to not use it as it's intended to be used. If I'm around people who don't want to hear it, and say so, or kids whose parents don't want them to hear it, I try to mind my Ps and Qs, but stuff will still slip out occasionally.
If people are really adamant about it though, and get really pissy and defensive about it, I just move on and find someone else to talk with. But I certainly won't try and surround myself with only people who swear a ton. I base my judgement of character on more than whether or not swears come out of their mouth.
It has it's place.
However, the thug culture is making it more a part of everyday expression, in spite of it's lack of necessity. It has it's place, just not in normal everyday conversation.

There is a time and a place for it. The time is not "every other word". The place is not "everywhere you go". I will swear occasionally, but not at work, not in public, and not around strangers.
