What am I doing wrong? Cruddy pic but I am trying to clean my first 1911 for the first time. Trying to take my mind off of things.

I have slide back. I install pin into guide rod. I carefully release slide and let the pin stop slide but the slide hits the pin before it gets to the breakdown notch!

Please help?

Thanks! :dunno: :embarassed:

I don't know why SA wants to complicate something as simple as a guide rod. I prefer a tool less break down for my TRP and replaced the two-piece with a full length one-piece guide rod (http://www.midwayusa.com/product/845414/cylinder-and-slide-1-piece-full-length-recoil-spring-guide-rod-with-recoil-spring-plug-1911-government-stainless-steel).

OR replace with GI style, plug and rod.

Guys, I can tell you that he's is talking about the bull barrel model, not the two piece guide rod.

...big difference

Yep. Taking the slide stop out helps...

Retract the slide.
Remove the slide stop.
Install the tale down pin into the guide rod.
Allow the slide to rest upon the take down pin.
Remove slide.

Now that you pointed it out, the bull barrel is quite obvious even in a poor photo. :embarassed:

That's what I did when I had a 1911 with a one piece guide rod:supergrin:

I was able to use a paperclip with a smaller diameter than the allen that came with the gun. That allowed the slide to come forward enough for the slide stop to meet the notch. I cleaned, lubed, and reinstalled. Seems to be good to go. Thank goodness for you tube!

I heard stories about times when there was no you tube or computers! How did you get by?

I believe the manual recommends the use of a paperclip.
