I took a few .22mag revolvers to the range today, one was my NAA mini...

and the other was my Ruger Single Six..

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/3003/22magreport004.jpg

Ammo was primarily the new Hornady FTX 45gr load, supposedly developed for short barrels, advertising reliable expansion and decent penetration.
I did have some CCI Maxi Mag +V also, a 30gr jhp bullet.

The Hornady ammo uses the plastic thingamabob in the nose to assure reliable expansion. From what I've seen on jello testing, it works (Brassfetcher).

Velocity is good too, chrono data I've seen puts it at 1000+ from a Ruger LCR (inch and 7/8) bbl and 940fps from a 1 and 1/8" NAA mini.
My mini has the longer barrel (inch and 5/8), so 1000fps is probably realistic.
The Ruger SS with its 6.5" barrel is safe for 1300+fps.

Shooting was done at the local grossly overcrowded indoor range. Max distance there was 50ft. Both revolvers worked fine with the ammo, no misfires and only one keyhole was observed.

The Mini is more accurate than people typically give it credit for, I did all my shooting at 30ft.

I had one bullet keyhole, good sauce overall.

With the Single Six, I shot the CCI stuff at 30ft, 20 shots in the head of target Blue Guy, and the rest was 50ft efforts with the Hornady ammo. Each group went just at 3" or an eighth under that. I'm sure the gun and ammo combo is capable of well beyond that, but I rushed things a little.

I like this ammo. I wouldn't go as far as saying it puts small .22mags on the level with .380acp as some do, but it definitely gets a bit more efficiency and a good bullet for short barreled guns....a nice thing for us Mini owners or folks who like the J framed .22mags for protection.
I can say it felt stronger in shooting than the CCI and other .22mag loads I've used in the NAA revolver.

Great report and nice shooting!:wow:

I love the .22WMR! It's a great round with plenty of power and easy to control. I think it would be a great round for women because of it's low recoil.

I find that my KT PMR-30 is a HIGHLY formidable weapon!

That Kel Tec is definately badass. The FTX load in a gun like that would be a pretty impressive with 30 rounds at your disposal, and zero recoil.

I paid $460 for mine on Gunbroker about 6 or 8 months ago. I was getting the magazines from buds gun shop for 21 dollars each:whistling:

I could probably sell everything in that pic tomorrow for $3000 or more!

Not that I would:supergrin:

I love mt PMR 30, very fun to shoot. Proud to say i sold my tan one for MSRP to a nice guy who really wanted it. I could have gotten double but i'm not into gouging. The dude was thrilled & that made it worth it.
