Was wondering what is your view on friction retention vs snap/velco hold for mag pouches when carrying in the woods.

Depends upon a lot- a quality carrier of either type will serve you well if you take care of it. Either design can, and has, failed.

I have just one twin magazine carrier (it's a friction fit) that is just holds just as tight as it did when I bought it twelve years ago. Even to this day, it'd take a pretty severe tumble or vicious snag from brush to dislodge a mag from it.

Just make sure you get a quality carrier and you should be fine.

I have never lost a mag out of my HSGI TACOs using only friction.
