I've just been using bulk patches from walmart and academy. However, I was wondering if it might be more economical to use old tshirts, socks, rags that are clean.

Anyone else do this and are some materials better than others?

I just use old t-shirts. I have a box I put them in just for cleaning use.

Scraps and rags are free but vary in absorbency and thickness which makes wrapping a jag aggravating.
A friend does fancy quilting. A yard of cotton flannel and a few minutes on her cutting board let her present me and her husband with a big supply at low cost.

I just use bulk packages. But when cleaning a shot gun I use paper towels with a patch in the front. Patches are cheap for the price of 1 gal. of gas I can clean a gun 20-30 times.

I have purchased material from stores to use. Cut to size for different calibers. Cheap way to get patches.

for my Brown Bess musket, (yes I shoot one), I make my own.

For all my modern firearms, I buy them.

I only cut patches if I run out. Then it's 100 percent cotton. Quality patches are pretty inexpensive from Brownell's. Patches for the rough stuff, cotton t-shirts or other rags for wipe downs. Old bed sheets, T shirts, socks and old shirts. Pretty much any old cotton cloth.

Buy microfiber towels at Walmart. They're washable/reusable. Use them for wipe down. Q-tips for tight spaces, and patches for the bore.

For my AR15 I use store bought .22 patches as it can be tough to get cut up pieces of tshirt to fit the jag and barrel just right.

For shotguns I use old tshirts and socks cut up.

I don't use cotton rags because much of the material is, 'polished' and varies in absorbency and thickness. I buy the largest packages of bulk cleaning patches that I can find - and in the largest size patches - and then I cut them to fit for each caliber. (Wal-Mart is NOT the best place to buy bulk patches. Suggest you try Amazon or elsewhere on line.) ;)

I like the GI patches but old T-shirts work in a pinch.

For $3 the bulk Walmart ones are fine. Cut to size & that's it.
