I just got this colt today and is missing the front sight, how good are these? And what's a good value for a good condition pistol like this one?:wavey:
I'm replacing the grips and I think I will go with the hi viz front sight:supergrin:

Remove those grips and check underneath, they trap corrosion
rather badly.

Looks great.........

i already checked and cleaned the gun . no rust or damage found. i just need the front sight to fire test it.

Before you get grips you kind of need a front sight! I'd send the slide off to Novak's and get a new sight installed properly.

I don't know if it was a good deal . I paid $550.00 out the door, I need to find a good front sight.

Good deal even if you have to pay to have a front sight installed.

I've seen other brands selling for 1200.00 at the gun show and could not resist this one at that price.

Colt would be your best bet. You can install it yourself if you care to.
Will need a front sight staking tool, look for one at Brownells.

THe Gold Cup National Match is the best that the Colt factory turned out as a production gun.

It is intended for bullseye shooting and will prove to be VERY accurate. As a result, it may not have enough recoil spring for full power 230 gr loads. You might want to research this because I don't recall how it works out. Ideally, you would probably shoot a 185 gr SWC (jacketed) bullet at mid-700 fps. I shoot a 200 gr LSWC in mine but that isn't nearly as accurate as the Hornady SWC.

I suppose there may be some custom guns that will be about as accurate but at nowhere near that cost.

Any competent local gunsmith can stake in a Colt front sight.

In the beginning, the gun was called the National Match. Then in the 1970s it became Gold Cup National Match. Sometimes in the late 1990s (I think), it was renamed the Gold Cup Trophy.

Currently Colt has two lines in the Gold Cup model: Gold Cup Trophy in stainless steel and Gold Cup National Match in blued.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money but still would get a decent set of checkered wooden grips then call CDNN Investments and order a set of checkered Herrett's Stock grips. These grips are not the super fancy wood that Herrett's would sell as custom grips but they're still highly serviceable and not bad looking at all.

Esmeralda is a very talented woman and makes some elegant grips but they're in the $100 range or more. I don't know if you'd want to spend that much money for a set of wood on a $550 gun. If you do, then go for it. I spent enough Esmeralda grips to probably buy a fancy pistol.

I didn't realize you still had the front sight. Those don't normally come out once they are staked in.
