My recently purchased Gen4 G20 came with magazines like the one on the right.

The one on the left is a Gen3 magazine and the one in the center is a Gen4 G21 magazine.

Which type magazines did the early G20 Gen4s come with? Middle or right?

GT member plouffedaddy can answer your question. If he doesn't see this thread and respond, send him a PM. He purchased one of the first Gen4 G20 pistols sold in the USA. See this relevant thread: Just picked up my Gen4 G20 (updated with pics...) (http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1427215)

Interesting that they are shipping new Gen4 mags without the rectangular, center ambi cutout. Few people will miss it since only early Gen3 G21SF pistols with the (ill-fated) ambidextrous mag release require the center notch. Good riddance I say.

Makes sense! That center cutout was for the failed and now discontinued ambidextrous magazine release. (I wondered when Glock was going to get rid of that worthless cutout.)

I thought maybe they were keeping it for a future HK style mag release.

Lefty here (switched over my glock to lefty release as well) and I have not had any mag release issues with my 9 or 40 in various mag capacities.

So what is the ambi issue?

My Gen4 G20 (4/12 born on date) came with the mags in the middle. I also have a Gen3 G20SF made 12/12 that came with the mags on the right.

At least Walther is building a Pistol with a conventional magazine release like most pistols use.

No, no, you are using a Gen4 with a reversible mag catch. Back in the day Glock dropped a G21 with a AMBI(left AND right) and i think at one point they had big plans for all glocks to be ambi (hence the rectangle notch)

I have a Gen3 G21SF with the ambi release and picatinny rail. I have not had one problem with this pistol..It is one of my best shooters..So whats the story behind the failed and now discontinued ambidextrous magazine release? Was I lucky getting one that was NOT defective?

I have one that 'sticks.' I've been meaning to send it back but just haven't gotten around to it....

The ambi would've been a good idea if it had been reliable...I wonder how well the other brands' ambi releases work
