I'm looking for non-Ruger mags for an older SS/walnut Mini-14 in 10,20 or 30 round capacity. I see ProMag, Tapco and others. Suggestions for better quality would be much appreciated.

Why the resistance to Ruger mags?

I have the Mini30 (yeah, heard three other people have the 30 also...still looking for them...)

Everything I've seen when using them says non-Ruger mags are bad juju in a Mini-14. Constant failures to feed, etc. Not to mention durability issues.

Mostly unavailability like the rest. I want to add several alternatives along with the Ruger's to wishlists so whatever comes in stock, I can get something. Would prefer Ruger as they should be 100% reliable. Just want some viable alternatives and I have no experience with anything else.

OIC...

ProMag doesn't have the best rep out there, according to the forum chatter. I have a few Tapcos for my 30 and haven't had a problem with them. But this is for my Mini30...no experience with the 14.

Before ruger started making mini 30 hi caps I went through several aftermarket mags, most of which were garbage.

Ruger magazines, no substitues.

The Ruger forums are loaded with home-shop remedies to "try" to get, specifically ProMags, running in the 14s.

A partner gave me a hand full of Promags for the Mini. He happily handed over five 30 rd and a 40 rd. I could do nothing to make them reliable. The 40 f2feed so badly that it has bent the cartridge into an almost L shape (has to be dangerous). Tapcos have been hit and miss, mostly miss.

Ruger OEMs have been flawless. My 0.02 is to save your money through not buying after markets for the Mini.

After I bought my GB model I started buying Ruger mags. I have a total of seven 20-rounders and two 30-rounders. I also have a couple Tapco mags for it.

I haven't shot it yet but I have no doubts that the Ruger mags will work perfectly.

Like others have said....save your money and buy Ruger!

Take a look on PerfectUnion.com
From my past experience, all aftermarket mags were complete garbage.

Don't buy the promags they suck, only Ruger 20 - 30 mags work.

I'd listin to what there saying about the Ruger mags. Yes they might be more expensive but I can tell you from first hand experience they work every time. Two mags you should never buy is aftermarket mags for the Mini 14 and plastic lipped mags for a Ruger 10/22. There Junk.

When Ruger wouldn't sell to normal folks, the only decent choice was PMI. PMI is NOT ProMag. My PMI mags look identical to Ruger and work great. I do not believe they are still in business, though.

Ruger & PMI mags are the best but I also have the following non Ruger mags that work fine:
2 steel 30 rnd Promags.
2 steel unknown mfr. 30 rnd mags.
4 steel unknown mfr. 20 rnd mags I bought from CDNN
many years ago.
Many Ram-Line 30 rnd polymer mags that work in the Mini 14 & AR-15

TURDS: 2 U.S.A 20 rnd mags. The rear locking lugs are located too low to properly lock the mags into the rifle at the right height resulting in failures to feed.

I've have had PMI Stainless mag for my Mini-14. They were the best of the aftermarket mag available.
