View Full Version : Ruger 96/44
What is everyone's thoughts on this handy little rifle? I may be acquiring one in the next few days and was wondering if anyone had experience with them and what their capabilities are? This will be my first .44mag and just wanted other peoples opinions. Thanks!
I haven't heard any negatives about the Ruger. I picked up a Winchester trapper and love it. The .44 mag seems "at home" in a little lever action carbine. "Warning: if you don't reload already a .44 carbine will create the desire to start. " If you don't now, save all your brass anyway.
Pretty handy little carbines for hunting deer in woods and brush. I've never owned one, but a friend had one he hunted with for years. I remember him taking several deer over the years with it.
Its a Ruger so I'd be surprised if it wont handle some hot rounds. .44 mag has alot of versatility and there is alot of different loadings for it.
The 16 inch barrel will give you some nice velocity with the 44 mag. I've heard they're good rifles but haven't handled one.
It is quite light and it KICKS LIKE A MULE with full .44 magnum loads.
Trust me.. I know.
A nice gun. I think you'll wonder why you hadn't got one sooner.
Thanks for the replies. One more question; is it ok to shoot .44spl out of it?
I have the 96/22magnum and love it. I bet the 44 is just like it :)
As to specials, I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to shoot them. As long as they feed good, should work fine. Not saying they won't feed good, but it is always possible that a lever might not like a particular bullet or overall cartridge length.
I've never had any trouble feeding any 22 magnum into my 96.
I'd buy a 96/44, it'd go nice with my 44 magnum revolver :)
I joined the NRA, have you yet?
I have one, haven't shot it much, put a 4x scope on it, sight it in and shot a wild boar with it, its a perfect light carbine for the woods, don't remember kicking that much.
