I have been working on first responder training for alternative fuel vehicles lately, and I must admit, that I'm paying more attention to fuel economy.

I like my SUVs, but I almost feel guilty when window shopping vehicles with lousy MPG. I actually drove a Nissan Leaf and a Volt. I liked the Leaf much better.

I have taken the gas hogs off our potential lists. Our next vehicle will be a fuel efficient one.

Not at all....I enjoy Jeep Wranglers and or "High performance" sports cars... "SUVs"...etc...Anything that burns real gas...no half and half stuff either.

I cannot stand any Progressive *induced "Green" machines... as long as I can pay for it whether new or used I will get it...will not be molded into a cube.

Actually I love my 2002 Toyota Prius so much that I got rid of my BMW 7 series. Just Friday I found out how bad everyone has it with gas when I fueled it up AND filled two 5 gallon gas cans and the bill came to like $58. I average 45- 47 mpg.

I had an 03 Silverado...then bought an 07 Honda Fit.

Both vehicles mine. When the wife and I split up I sold the truck to pay off the car.

I liked the truck but as much as I drive I had to go with the car.

Elio is supposed to be out next year I think. 84mpg, goes over 100mph, and only costs 6.8k.

I plan to pick one up.

Of course it does. It blows my mind when people say they spend $600 or more every month on gas.

I'd love to go buy a Jeep Wrangler tomorrow but I don't want to get 15MPG.

I just bought a 2006 prius because of the mpg, among other features. I enjoy cars too, so I have a 68 caddy project car. But for a daily driver I needed something good on gas if I was going to have to be making payments again. The prius uses maybe 1/3 the gas my current car does. If I could have found a 1950 buick in daily driver shape that I could make payments on I would have bought it, but in the real world sometimes you can't drive your dream car.

Earlier this week I filled up the short bus at work. 112 dollars. 33 odd gallons. Glad it was on their dime and not mine.

Yes. I don't think I'll ever go 'green', but fuel consumption is way up there for me. I think I save myself about 1/3 of what the average guy burns per week because of what and how I drive.

If they really can deliver what they say they can, I'd be interested in one as a strictly commuter vehicle. Then have my truck at home ready to work if I need it.

I'd pay cash for it and it'd have itself paid for in 2 years in gas savings alone.

I buy vehicles with its use in mind. I buy big pickup trucks for work, mini van (21mph) for the family. When we got into RV-type camping, we bought a travel trailer camper. So I bought a truck I could use for work and family - 4 door F250 pickup truck (9mpg towing). Then to replace the minivan, we bought a Ford Focus wagon (31mpg), since with the truck we didn't need anything much larger than that. When the wagon got hit in an accident, we bought a Nissan Rogue for the all wheel drive and four doors. I was not aware that it gets 28mph on the highway, that was a nice bonus.

All our vehicles were really bought with their use as #1, and them mpg and other options as #2.

Factors such as comfort and features play a huge role. I have a 2012 Ford Fusion that averages 32-34mpg.

I get 42mpg on my way to work, and 26mpg on the way back(going from 5500' to 1100' above sea level).

It is a nice balance between style, comfort, and economy. I have the Microsoft Sync system, SiriusXM radio, and power everything to keep me comfy. Plus, I think it's kinda' cool looking for a 4-door sedan commuter machine...

Yup. I got a Charger with a Hemi for just that reason.

It's fun as all hell but also gets 22 MPG-ish on the road. :)

I might get another with a V6 just for the 33-35 MPG on the highway and keep this one to play.

I'm more concerned about my style of driving.
My car average fuel consumption (according to the official data) is about 20 MPG, yet I'm usually getting 25 MPG, just by driving a bit slower.

Are you just reading the MPG from the computer or doing the math? In my experience the computers are NEVER accurate.

Just curious if the Fusion MPG is actually that high. Good looking car BTW!

I was very impressed with the Leaf. The owner was extremely knowledgable and insisted that I drive it. It's a comfortable car.

Same here. 99.9% of my driving is alone or possibly with one passenger. So the two-seater thing isnt an issue.

I might sell my Honda and get a truck again as well as the Elio. I miss my Silverado.

Its also nice that its being built in Shreveport. They bought the old GM plant that shut down. I plan to apply when they start production in the spring if I havent found anything better by then.

I love my Diesels, I own 3, 2000 Ford F350 PSD, 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 CTD and a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500. But if I had to commute like Vart did I think I would have to look at the Focus, Sharp car Vart. I have toys, a Boat, a Camper and Motorcycles, over the summer the trucks are pretty much parked unless its towing something.

Most people have more car then they need. I have a ranger that gets mid 20s and has seen 27 mpg hwy. It does everything that the average person needs with a truck. Ford has convinced everyone that you need a diesel f250 to haul Sheetrock from Lowes or pull a landscaping trailer.

Diesel and CNG/LNG are the real green fuels. Wait till u gotta replace the batteries on a hybrid. Also look at the lawsuits against the prius due to drastic drops in mpg as batteries wear down. 29mpg hybrid. EPA killed hybrids cuz diesel electric hybrids would do 60-80mpg easy. Tier 4 emissions killed that. ****ing guberment bureacracy

A. Acceleration

B. Handling

C. Braking

D. Comfort

E. Prestige of ownership.

Out of curiosity, why do you commute so far? That's roughly 1/2 year extra days of work in just driving, not to mention the transportation cost.

I drive a gasoline powered Corolla - I get ~38mph. Right where EPA puts it. Every single consumer test I've ever seen on a TDI is about where the EPA put it too - 38-40 city/hwy.

With diesel about 16-25% higher than gas and the price of a TDI so much more than a comparable gas vehicle, I'm sticking with small gas vehicles. It's a wash - My cheaper fuel vs. your higher mileage. A TDI has no advantage. Damned nice vehicle, but no advantage.

I paid $6000 for for my Corolla 145K miles ago. I've replace a $45 MAS (used). When it goes, I'll get another one - for $6K. I wonder what kind of TDI I could buy for $6K?

depends on why I'm buying. For a car to go to work in an office, MPG is a factor in my choice. The family car, MPG is a very small factor, the truck non-existent.

Your corolla, isn't equivalent of a TDI jetta.

The Jetta has all that.

There is no trim package, or enough options to choose from, to make the Rolla equal to a Jetta. You'd have to step up to a Avalon, or maybe the topped out Camry, to get the "standard" features in a TDI Jetta.

My speedometer is off by about 2-3 mph based on radar and it shows me going 80mph when I'm actually going 77-78... Probably explains why the computer MPG is fairly accurate...:dunno::dunno:

I'll also add that I agree that most folks have too much car or truck. Does everyone really need a SUV? Even though we have 2, a Tahoe and a CRV, we made it fine with an Accord, a Camry, and an Impala, with 2 adults, 2 kids growing up, and vacations.

I've been in insurance auto claims for 6 years and there are no suitable jobs closer to me.

I finally decided I had had enough a few months ago and was about to quit and go work for Ruger about 10 miles away when my wife got ill; we are still trying to get her diagnosed. Don't want to change insurance carriers at this time.

Hopefully, in another few months I will be commuting to work on my DR650 motorcycle...:cool:

I generally like diesels, but the extra cost of it around here negates the mileage gains...

At $3.50 a gallon today for gas, my daily commute costs me $15.90 at 33mpg.

I talked to a local guy that says his TDI gets 42mpg the same trip.

With diesel here at $4.10 a gallon, if I had a TDI, I would be paying $14.60 a day, or $30 less a month in gas...

Since Ford charges me $40 for an oil change using synthetic-blend oil, and VW charges $75 for their oil changes, it really is a wash...

I'm younger, and mileage doesn't really matter to me too much, since I don't drive very far to work or school. I figure once I get a degree, and a real job, and have a decent commute, then mileage might matter to me more. But right now, mileage doesn't matter, I drive whatever I think is fun and looks good.

OTOH, an Avalon or Camry both have a lot more people room than a Jetta. I looked at a Jetta Sportwagon around a year ago (and had a 6yo with me) and even for very small children, the back seat / leg room was cramped. We decided that with our kids only getting bigger, the Jetta was just too small. If they'd just stretch the thing a little, it could work.

I've driven a diesel before, and though it's still inconvenient to find diesel, I'd buy one again if any of the cars I was interested in were imported (most are made for other markets, but not brought to the US). Pretty much all we get here are some high priced Mercedes, too small VW, and giant sized trucks. Give me a mid-sized sedan or small to mid sized SUV in diesel getting at least high 20s (city) to high 30s (highway) MPG, and I'll buy it.

And you don't NEED a pistol or a black rifle. A single-shot 22mag is all you NEED to hunt varmints...

Sometimes it isn't about need. It's about want or filling a desire.

In reference to the OP:

Yup. I traded my 34mpg Mini Cooper S with 172 HP for a 15mpg Mustang GT with 420. I'll call the milage loss a straight swap for HP. :)

Gas mileage is a secondary concern. Yes, it matters to some point, but I'm not going to buy an econobox just to get the least gas used possible. My car gets 27 MPG highway but still has a supercharged 6 with 333 HP under the hood that can provide fun on demand. Sure, I could have gone with more economy but this is much more fun.

Wow. I just couldn't imagine commuting 60,000 miles a year. I guess you gotta do what you gotta do though.

I miss my bikes. When I lived in CA, I commuted 95 miles each way, KZ1000police then a Honda Pacific Coast and finally a Honda ST1100.. the weather and not being able to split lanes kinda kills the fun of biking in CO

Yep. My truck gets 11mpg on a good day. My daily driver gets 33. I drive the truck when I need it or at least once a week. I won't even consider a daily driver that is rated at less than 30mpg.

I just got a 2011 BMW 335d turbo-diesel.

24 mpg in town and 36-38 mpg on highway.
265 HP and 425 ft. lbs. of torque in a comfortable, great handling, car with all the bells and whistles and with all that torque, a rocket ship.

I'm happy with my choice.

I thought you would approve. I own the RS6 outright so I think I want to have a broker keep an eye out for a clean 04 Turbo or if I can find one an 06 Turbo S but I'll have to swallow a payment for a while.

Run down to the BMW dealer and get yourself a am X3 335d.

Haven't driven an ecoboost. But Its not really the same league of handling. It's a truck. And the biggest problem with an ecoboost is it not a raptor. I like raptors. I could see having one of them

Something to think about with TS. It has bigger brakes and the price of rotors is very high (these are wear out items). Also with brakes you cannot run the 18inch wheels. There is a much better selection of 18" inch snow tires and general grabber AT also is made in an 18" that fits.

Power department the "only" two changes is larger intercoolers and software. Look at upsolute for the power that you can get with just software. They will sell TS program for a T they just will tell you no extended (very) high speed driving as the intercoolers will heat soak.

Now if you are willing to have new turbochargers, 750hp is easy (just write a check). Look at EVOMS as an example.

Really for what the vehicle does i am happy with the fuel consumption. I have a grand average of high 16s. It is premium fuel. But life is too short to worry about spending extra money on gas. There are "car guys" and they understand this. Then there are passengers on the road of life and they don't understand why someone would burn excess amounts of fuel.

This just got me thinking. Cars and coffee is next Saturday. Some neat cars there. It is really an interesting mix. My FIL seems to get as much attention with his FJ40s as the new ferarris get. And the old guys really like his nomad. That car gets a lot people drooling on it. I (hopefully) fly home Friday (I have a ticket but that doesn't really mean the plane flys). If kid doesn't have soccer game, I will try and go to cars and coffee.

OTOH, an Avalon or Camry both have a lot more people room than a Jetta. I looked at a Jetta Sportwagon around a year ago (and had a 6yo with me) and even for very small children, the back seat / leg room was cramped. We decided that with our kids only getting bigger, the Jetta was just too small. If they'd just stretch the thing a little, it could work.

I've driven a diesel before, and though it's still inconvenient to find diesel, I'd buy one again if any of the cars I was interested in were imported (most are made for other markets, but not brought to the US). Pretty much all we get here are some high priced Mercedes, too small VW, and giant sized trucks. Give me a mid-sized sedan or small to mid sized SUV in diesel getting at least high 20s (city) to high 30s (highway) MPG, and I'll buy it.

In general a "sports car" is small and light and therefore have decent fuel consumption.

Of course there are, for lack of a better term, super cars. These also have high power. I wouldn't say a 911 or corvette are really "sports cars" anymore...they are different than say miata or Elise. It's a different philosophy. I am not saying that i wouldn't take a 911 gt3 RSR any day over an Elise, I just wouldn't call them the same type of car.

There is no trim package, or enough options to choose from, to make the Rolla equal to a Jetta. You'd have to step up to a Avalon, or maybe the topped out Camry, to get the "standard" features in a TDI Jetta.

I was just saying that with the 'premium' that you pay for diesel fuel, the TDI and Corolla are a wash. This winter I saw gas at $3 and diesel at $4 - same station. You have to get 33% better mileage with a TDI to come out over a gas car. Ex: I get 38 (with my Corolla) * 1.33 = 50 (what you need to get with a TDI) just to be even.

As I said, the TDI is a nice idea - but not the most efficient commuter car out there. I'm not kidding myself - I think the Corolla (Civic, etc) are more cost effective as commuters.

Diesels also have more torque.. I have a hitch in mine and regually pull a 4x 8 trailer. Even loaded to the tune of about #1500lbs I still got 37mpg with it and have no prob maintaining 75+mph while towing ... having 2 kids, I basically use it as a 4 door pickup. When the trailer is attached. The 2" receiver is custom built by me and it has ride rite airbags on it. BTW about 1/2 the vehicles on the road in Europe are diesels.

True and true - diesels (generally) have higher resale and more torque.

But higher resale means you can buy a used gas commuter for (your numbers) almost half of the TDI. Ex: I bought my Corolla, with 70K miles on it, for $6K. I now have 215K miles. It runs perfectly. It would not have served me better if I had paid $12K for it.

I don't tow with it - my boat/trailer is probably 2000#. That's too much for my car or yours. I have a 2008 truck with only 30K - tow, plow, haul, etc. This thread is about mileage for vehicle choice - yes for commuting, not so much for my truck.

Yes - diesel engines typically last longer than gas. But most cars I've seen with 300K+ miles are pretty well shot in other areas - suspension, interior, rust, etc.

I know that there are a lot of diesels in Europe - Isuzu used to make a 1.3L diesel that was rated at 55mpg. I'm sure there were competitors - wish they were here.

A good example is the Smartfor2. U will not find a gas version of that car anywhere in Europe. The diesel they use produces a 75mpg car. But USA. EPA forced them to use a far less efficient gas engine that gets half that MPG. BTW the Jetta has a 3000lb towing capacity in Europe and sell it with an in frame hitch design (similar to what I built on mine). I have owned a couple of old corollas and they are one of the best, most reliable and economic cars ever made. Toss a Sentra into that mix too

On another note, wife just got a new CRV. She averages 27 around town. Our 1 long trip in it so far netted over 31mpg. For the size I am very impressed with the fuel effiency of the 13' model CRV. Might even get one myself.

We have a 2006 Tundra for towing trailers that carry cows, large water tanks, cars, whatever. It gets about 14mpg towing heavy stuff. We also have a 2010 Yaris that gets 31/38. I think it is smart to have one of each for the required situation.

I like my SUVs, but I almost feel guilty when window shopping vehicles with lousy MPG. I actually drove a Nissan Leaf and a Volt. I liked the Leaf much better.

I have taken the gas hogs off our potential lists. Our next vehicle will be a fuel efficient one.

No, I got your point, but pure mileage, isn't the only consideration. If it was, everyone would drive 10-12 year old cars like the Camry and the Civic.

The Camry is a nice car. But bought new, it can't really compete.

I don't really consider it. I would like to but alp of my needs lead me to a 4x4 pickup anyway.

Mainly, because I'm 6'10" tall. The only things I can fit in and get out of comfortably are trucks and SUVs. Cars sit way to low to the ground even if they are roomy on The inside.

I also need 4x4 for the winter and to get to my fishing and shooting spots.

It hasn't yet as we've pretty much always bought what we needed for our situation at the time. I have been looking at new cars lately though and I have been thinking about it. I'm sure I'll just end up buying what I like though and let the mileage be dammed.

My commute is 30 miles round trip and I almost exclusely ride one of my MC's and my wife works from home so mileage isn't a super important concern.

When I was driving an F250 diesel, and paying $5 a gallon and getting 13 miles a gallon, I found myself not going to places I wanted to go, and not doing the things I wanted to do, because of prohibitive fuel expenses.

So now I have a 30MPG Vibe. If I want to run up to Canada for a day of pike fishing, I go. If I want to run up to Michigan for some mushroom hunting....it's mushrooms for dinner!

If I had a 50 MPG Prius, I would probably not hesitate to run up to Alaska just for the drive.

If you want to have your cake and eat it too, you could buy a car like that to save you time (time is money right?), and keep a couple gas cans in the back, fill them up and burn the fuel outright, either at home or somewhere to keep Americans at work.

When shopping for a commuter car, yes, mpg is important.

I've got 4 vehicles that are in my driveway.
One gets pretty decent mileage. That's our commuter car.
28-30 in town. 34-36 mpg highway. ('11 Camry.)

I've got an old Lexus ('93) that gets 'decent' mileage at 139,000 miles on the clock. 22-24 in town. 28-30 highway.
The old truck. . . . well. . . . it's a 16-17 mpg highway truck, period. 14 mpg in town.
My wife mini-van. . . . 18 mpg city. 25 TOPS highway. (Usually 22-23 with her driving.)

So while id love a 4 Door Jeep Wrangler or a CJ Cruiser it would have to get a minimum of 25+ MPG highway....or near 20 combined..and they dont come close.


So I will end up with some snooZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzer of a vehicle like some AWD Subaru that you see 3 trillion of on the road :( .....Sux that they cant make a nice looking 4X4 that gets good MPG to boot...I am waiting on a SLIGHT glimmer of hope though in Chevys new smaller trucks of 2014 that have the V6 in them..ive heard the MPG on those even in 4X4 models is supposed to be decent(25+)

I don't own a hybrid and I only know one person that does. But, I think your 50K battery replacement talk is just that - talk.

What is the life expectancy for hybrid battery packs? I don't recall anyone every replacing them...

Still has the original batteries in it.

I can vouch for this. I bought a '12 leftover Prius new in January and love it. I did a ton of research and it showed that I should expect 200k+ miles easily on this car without a problem (taxi companies, people with extreme commutes etc). I've been averaging 48.9 mpg over the last 4900 miles. Having owned a dozen cars so far and this is by far my favorite. Great transportation, $15 a week for gas, push to start, push to stop...I could go on forever. I went from a Wrangler to this...:wavey:

Depending on your price range you can get a powerful, nice car that can go in the snow and dry and still get decent mileage. I have an Audi S5- manual transmission, AWD, 333HP with a bunch of torque (supercharged), still gets 27 MPG highway. Stick some winter tires on it and it drives awesome in the snow. Put the summer tires back on and it accelerates and corners quite well. Comfy, too. :)

It did but I drive a motorcycle now pretty much everywhere.

Up until 4/12 I drove a Jeep wrangler. I filled that up 3 times every 2 weeks, at 45$ a pop.

So about 275$ a month on fuel.

Then I got a Subaru and was filling that up once a week at 40$ a fill, spending 160$ a month.

Now I drive a KLR 650. I fill my bike once a week at 15$, so I spend like 60$ on gas for the bike a month, and I fill the subaru up once a month for 30-40.

So I might spend 100 a month on gas when it's warm out, so from March-November, nine month out of the year(I have heated grips and a heated vest)

So annually w/o motorcycle I would spend
Jeep-3300
Subaru-1920

Annually w/ motorcycle
Jeep-1950
Subaru-1380

So switching to a Subaru and driving my motorcycle will save me about 2k dollars this year. But this is a false economy as I spent 6.5k on the bike, then 1k on farkles and 400 annually on insurance, a couple hundred more on some new gear.

I see many people driving too much car. 80% of the time it's just me, another 15% or so it's just my girlfriend and I. I don't need a big ass suburban assault vehicle to carry one or two people.

I might start shopping for a truck soon, but it will be a smaller truck like a Ranger or Tacoma or Colorado or something. 2k a year seems like a reasonable amount for gas.

1380 annually breaks down to 26.5$ a week, which is pretty reasonable I think.

For now. When gas goes up the bike will be invaluable. Even if gas hits 6$ a gallon I could still drive all month for just 120$ at 50mpg. For that much I've got rain gear and pelican cases, I can suck it up....

Most of the people I know who drive big vehicles, do so for a reason (or reasons). They have kids, haul stuff a lot, go off road, use it for work, whatever.

Speaking of trucks, once you own a pickup truck, it is very, very hard not to always own one. They are darn nice to have. I know more than a few very wealthy people who have old, beater pickup trucks around behind their McMansions. As they say, their BMW or Mercedes is useless for actual work, lol.

I am always somewhat embarassed to admit driving a '12 suburban, but with 5 children 8-11 years old my choice was heavy suv or mini-van and I just can't embrace the van.

I bought Honda odyssey 2 years ago. Most useful vehicle I've ever owned for day to day driving.

I bought MPG right out of hospital. Small econo box. Got hit head on, died,opps he is not dead/cut him out of that car. Spent two months in hospital, 4 in wheel chair, crutches, cane, constant pain... Hundreds of thousands in medical. (thankfully I have good insurance that I direct paid long before that was popular) The ins tried to get out of it. Lost my info..... I had bank records showing yrs of direct payments.
My car gets 28 hwy mpg summer, 22 most winter (shorter trips, snow,slush, cold...
I also buy for what is needed. If I am pulling 18k load I don't want a eco boost pickup. I use a turbo dsl that has power to safely pull it.
Driver can increase/decrease milage 10% easy. If I want to get 29mpg I can't drive 75mph. Take it down to just hair under 70 and I hit +29 on long trips. When I get to exit I take it out of cruise early and coast. (that car does coast like there is no friction)
Drivers who's foot is firmly on brake, go pedal, brake, go.... wear out brake,car and fuel pump. :0

I want a "new to me" car. Just spring I guess. It does have to have rated epa 25mpg but more important how it feels, visibility, trunk,etc..

I recently picked up a 2013 Volt. I really don't care about the environmental issues too much. I would club a baby seal if the money was right. But in the month I have had it I have never filled it's 9 gallon tank. I bought it because the price was right, the features were great, and it is actually pretty quick when it's in sport mode. Those electric motors really do put out some torque.

Saving money on fuel is great. But I like the stability of it too. If things with North Korea or Iran heat up fuel prices can spike, which would blow. Also the ability to have a portable generator is great. One guy on the Volt forums used it to generate power during one of the last huge storms on the east coast.

For me cars like the Nissan Leaf are out of the question. I like the ability to drive 200 miles at the drop of a hat. In the Volt you can do that, and rather comfortably as well.

DSL WAS cheaper then gas. It was always cheaper. Then they decided to make it low sulfer, low this/that... Increased production costs, and engine wear. decreased MPG and cold gel point...
So they had to play with additives to make things work. (added costs)
Neighbor had a VW Rabbit dsl (1980?) that got 50mpg She loved it. Now new engines (dsl) almost have to have Urea tanks...

Have you guys ever thought to put your car on diet? (remove A/C, carpets, chairs, panels, and convert your window to manual roller, etc) (straight pipe, remove the spare tire, etc) You could increase your MPG by 33% easily.

Weight has the effect on the MPG. If Pirus had removed all the "safety" features then it could be 60+ MPG easily. It applies to the TDI cars as well.

Yeah that is the reason why I couldn't buy a diesel car. It seems the Gov't wants us to buy new car for every five to seven years.

I love me some muscle cars and trucks (I've owned 3 mustangs and an F150 Lightning). When going back to school meant I would be in a long distance relationship I quickly realized that 15MPG on the highway + 650mile travel distance would not work with a student's budget. I bought a 2009 Camry for my daily driver, and rejoiced in my new 30+ MPG highway capability. When I went to grad school I sold my '03 F150 Lightning, and my '93 Cobra to help cover expenses. In a couple of years when I'm done with grad school I'll buy some more toys, but until then I'll have to live the life of practicality. That means that I need a car that can get 30+MPG on the highway, and I don't have room in my life for multiple cars at the moment. So yes, fuel economy does influence my car decision. But I can't wait until I'm driving a truck again :cool:

I have been working on first responder training for alternative fuel vehicles lately, and I must admit, that I'm paying more attention to fuel economy.

I like my SUVs, but I almost feel guilty when window shopping vehicles with lousy MPG. I actually drove a Nissan Leaf and a Volt. I liked the Leaf much better.

I have taken the gas hogs off our potential lists. Our next vehicle will be a fuel efficient one.

In order of importance-
High speed handling
High speed repeated braking (rejected several otherwise nice cars for failing this test.)
OEM Tire ratings
On-ramp acceleration
Cost vs warranty time and coverage
Required Maintenance
Color
Gas Mileage

Why? I have found gas mileage is a figment of imagination on the paperwork. It relates to how you drive and what you ask of your car. I ask to much to even consider trying to 'save gas'

BTW, when you get your gas miser, don't get in the left lane and then try to 'save gas'. You'll be in my way.

Not too bad actually. Public charging is $1 an hour, 4 hours to full, maybe twice a week. I get about 40 miles a full charge. When charging at home the car is programmed to only charge on off-peak energy. Maybe $15 a month about. Only had it a month so no telling on the long term cost. Right now, per the display I am getting 170 mpg.

Depending on your price range you can get a powerful, nice car that can go in the snow and dry and still get decent mileage. I have an Audi S5- manual transmission, AWD, 333HP with a bunch of torque (supercharged), still gets 27 MPG highway. Stick some winter tires on it and it drives awesome in the snow. Put the summer tires back on and it accelerates and corners quite well. Comfy, too. :)

I know I loved Audis also till I found out how much they cost to FIX :) . I could afford the car, the gas, would love the AWD and power, id never be able to afford to repair it :) . I was looking at a few year(2010 or so) S4....then I came upon a thread on a Audi forum about a guy that had his tranny go out..$11,000 later...I stopped reading and said screw that lol

lol, I have a well paid job and yet I do this. I just toss the stuff I don't need in my commuter car. Less weight more faster and better MPG. :)

I plan to get an used M3 for my pleasure ride. :)

I commute 60 miles round trip to work. Plus most of my friends live pretty far away. About a year ago I bought a used 01 Silverado. 15mpg. I could drive something more economic, but I feel that the experience and the joy of driving something I love outweighs the cost of gas.
