View Full Version : D.C. councilmember wants Redskins to change name

A group of Native Americans has launched a new court battle to deny the team federal trademark protection, which would essentially force a name change.
http://hamptonroads.com/2013/04/dc-councilmember-wants-redskins-change-name

The Redskins maintain the name honors Native Americans and that they don't mean to offend anybody, but two of the judges questioned that line of thinking.

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III appeared to criticize the move on Twitter, writing, “In a land of freedom we are held hostage by the tyranny of political correctness.”

There was an American Indian community college out here (MT? ND? SD?) and their basketball team was called, "The Whites." Their mascot was a guy wearing a business suit holding a briefcase. Bloody brilliant. HH

Thinking more about this, it's funny.

They play and practice in Landover, MD.
Their corporate HQ is in Ashburn, Va.

Other than the Washington part of the name, what the heck does the DC council have to do with the Redskins?

I saw a discussion on this years ago on some debate show. When the question came up as to what to change the name to, the person who debated for the change said that as the "offended group", they get to decide what the new moniker would be.

I think it's great. I hope there are a lot of liberal Redskins fans who are upset over it.

"Fighting Whities?" I'm willing to bet that's not their team name any more. And though I'm a diehard Redskins fan, I fail to see how such a pejorative team name "honors Native Americans." How long do you think a team name would last if it similarly "honored" African Americans??

As an Eastern Cherokee I fail to see any issue with the Washington Redskin's name. Find something else to be sensitive about.

Yet, Caucasians have proved to be remarkably resistant to offense. Quite the opposite, many agree with the e-mailer who saw the new team name as an honor to white Americans, who apparently don't get enough credit for their many contributions to history.

"Help me out here," asked one e-mail to the Greeley Tribune, "why am I supposed to be offended?"

Within days the newspaper, the college and Little Owl's office had received so many requests for team T-shirts that the Fightin' Whities now sell their own line of sportswear at their own Web site with all proceeds going to the Fighting Whites Scholarship Fund Inc.

and from another poll:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/magazine/08/17/indian.wars030402/
Indeed, a recent SI poll suggests that although Native American activists are virtually united in opposition to the use of Indian nicknames and mascots, the Native American population sees the issue far differently. Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81% of Native American respondents said no. As for pro sports, 83% of Native American respondents said teams should not stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters and symbols. Opinion is far more divided on reservations, yet a majority (67%) there said the usage by pro teams should not cease, while 32% said it should.

We in Washington will consider changing the name of our beloved Redskins right after Atlanta changes the name of the Braves and stops doing that annoying tomahawk chop nonsense.

Additionally, on behalf of all animal lovers, we insist that the Dolphins, Lions, Tigers, Seahawks, Orioles, Falcons, Colts, Bluejays, Broncos, and Bears stop disparaging our mammalian cousins and that those religious fanatics in San Diego become the Wiccans.

I have noticed for a long time that developers will cut down every tree in a given area to build houses and then name every street after the trees that were cut down. Seems to be the same pattern with the Native American sports teams. I'm sure there are other examples of this happening but these two came to mind.

The DC council should worry about the bigger problems in the city, but I can see why some people of Native American descent are offended.

Here's what I can't understand:

This is still okay:
http://www.disruptivepublishers.com/products/X360/MLB/Cleveland-Indians.png

But the University of Illinois's "Chief Illiniwek" was too offensive, was banned from performing at road games, and as of 2007, had to stop entirely. Yes, the dance was made up and wasn't historically accurate, but it was a much better tribute to Native tribes than a bright red grinning face with buck teeth and a feather in his hair.

Strange bedfellows indeed. :cheerleader::wave:

In spite of the political correctness whiners taking to the warpath on this issue, 425 of 435 members of congress refused to sign on to the silly request to change the sacred, hallowed, revered and respected name of the Washington Redskins.

A few years ago someone sued the University of Utah on behalf of the Ute nation. They wanted the U of U to stop using the phrase " The Running Utes". The tribe was pissed. Pfft' That would be like hiring Rosy O Donnell for the NRA spokesperson. Most simply don't know anything about us and will glad recite some guy who states his big toe is 1/64s Cherokee and "He says he not offended."
Just like we don't like the 2nd Amendment "defined" for us by some one who has never held a firearm in their life, just by what they see on "TV,", we don't like these Caricatures defined and accepted by someone who has no Idea what it means to be a 'Indin.

It may not matter to some. But 2nd Amendment doesn't to others as well. Does that mean it doesn't matter?
It's really about dignity, which also means that a person and/or peoples matter. When I hear people talk smack about 'Indin people, such as the "Redskins" I hear them talking smack about these guys, one of my Grandpas being one of them;
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k298/chewybaca67/Code3.jpg (http://s91.photobucket.com/user/chewybaca67/media/Code3.jpg.html)
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k298/chewybaca67/Code2.jpg (http://s91.photobucket.com/user/chewybaca67/media/Code2.jpg.html)

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k298/chewybaca67/code4.jpg (http://s91.photobucket.com/user/chewybaca67/media/code4.jpg.html)

They used our "Redskin" language, which used to be illegal by the way, to save thousands of fighting White men. In
fact, if any of y'all had grandparents that fought in the Pacific theater in WWII, YOU may not even ever have existed if my Grandpa wasn't there as a Navajo Code Talker. On Iwo Jima alone over 600 coded messages were transmitted with not a single one being decoded. America could not have won with out that, or at least with out the sacrifice of thousands of more lives, like your Grandpas'.
To me. That does matter. A lot in fact. But no, folks gotta sit in their chair like some fat arrogant white kid playing video games all day blinded by immediate gratification and always having to be right to think for once about others who sacrificed so you could talk smack.
Oh by the way, I think I hear my Grandpa's spirit saying
"Your welcome."
No honor man. No honor or dignity at all.
