I know this is not a "Glock" i am asking about... but i would appreciate any and all input on your likes and dislikes, from those of you who 'own' or 'have owned' a Sig P220 .45 acp.

i am very interested in the purchase of this gun, and would like to know what yor experiences have been.

Thanks in advance!

Have only had mine for about 3-4 weeks. I absolutely love it. Pretty accurate. I've tried it with the following ammo, none of which gave me so much as a hiccup.

230gr Federal Hydra Shok JHP
230gr Speer Gold Dot JHP
230gr Winchester White Box JHP
230gr Sellier and Belliot FMJ
230gr Winchester White Box FMJ
230gr UMC FMJ

I've had no failures of any kind, and gun is a very sweet shooter. I'm gonna pick up some Blazer, and run a few boxes of it, and see how it goes. All of the JHP's FUNCTIONED fine, and just for pure economics, I'm carrying the Winchester White Box JHP.

Only thing I'd pay attention to, is I would try to get one in Stainless. Everything I read on Sig boards, and even here on GT, suggested the Sig finish just wasn't very rust protective. If you can't find one in Stainless, I think Tripp does his coatings for a reasonable price.

Other than that, I love mine...

Good luck

I cannot say enough positive things about the 220. Indy brought up a good point regarding the finish. I have a robar coat on the slide so rust is not an issue. However, I also have a 228 that will rust badly; especially with a leather IWB holser in the summer (phoenix). I would go with the 220 in stainless finish it is worth every penny.

The 220ST is the finest fightin' .45 available at any price! The ST is a stainless frame & slide 220. They are a class above the standard 220. Mine has never had one single malfunction in several thousand rds, feeds any ammo, and shoots under 2in groups at 25yds like a target pistol. You'll never shoot a smoother pistol in your life. There is no recoil. You won't believe it when you shoot it! This stainless masterpiece is the ultimate .45 pistol!!!!;)

The only problem I remember hearing about P220's is an old slide breakage issue. Otherwise thay are reliable, accurate, etc...

I basically replaced my P220 with a G30: standard mags are ten rounds, G21 mags may be available; accurate; reliable; very easy to maintain and repair; same operating system as my other Glock, and so on....

I sure do like mine.

I can only think of one negative thing...

As a reloader, I can't get it to function very well (if at all) with my stubby, little 185 grain wadcutter bullets. Other than that, it runs great!

Other than the fact that the damn pistol rusts on me at the drop of a hat, I have no complaints. No inaccuracy problems. No reliability problems. A trip to Arizona Response Systems solved the corrosion problems with a coat of METACOL III.

I don't own a 220, but one of my shooting buddies does, and I've shot his on occasion. I personally don't like true double-action pistols, so that's my bias against the 220. I don't like the long first trigger pull. Also don't like the high bore axis, relative to my G21, nor the paucity of the mag capacity of the 220.

Other than those caveats, I found the 220 to be well-made and accurate. I thought I was going to get a deal on one at one time, but the deal fell through. ($350 for a state trooper's issue weapon)

I think I could learn to appreciate the 220, but would probably be never motivated to spend the bucks to buy one.

Keep those cards and letters coming boys... i'm listening!

i appreciate all so far. Just want to get all the responce i can here.
Got i gun show this weekend, and don't want to go all the way there before i get a few facts and then make up my mind...

I'm sorta where ..."WalterGA,".... is in his post. I believe i could learn to appreciate or like the gun, and the SS model although heavier than the blued.. the blue 27 oz. the ss...39 oz.
i think "IF" i do this, i will go ahead with the SS model.

Just want to hear some more pro's/con's before i make a decision.

I too am trying to save for and obtain a P220. Of all the guns i've shot or fondled, the Sig 220 is THE most comfy in my hand. The 226 and XD coming in 2nd place as a tie (the 226 has a slightly fatter grip, so it's a little less comfy)

Glocks used to be real comfy, but after you've held an XD, a Sig, or a Walther P99, the Glocks aren't quite as comfy. I really like the interchangable backstrap on the P99. It's a very comfy gun for me, I just wish it was slightly larger overall.

I like the SW99 series too. I'm not a fan, however, of 1911 style guns, I don't like S&W autos (save for the SW99), and I don't like revolvers.

CZ75's and IMI Baby Eagles are great. Nothing tho, compares to the feel of the 220. I just wish they didn't cost $800 for a new gun.

I've been extremely happy with mine, it's got about 1000rds thru it and hasn't jammed yet. It fits my hand "just right", and is very accurate. Recoil isn't an issue, to me, with the standard aluminum frame.

I say go for it; sell it if it's not your cup of tea. I bet you will keep it ;)

The P245 offers other options. It is smaller and lighter. I think the magazine capacity is different though not sure. The trigger I tried was very nice as usual. The double action weight must be trained with. When taken to the range, the shooter must practice in the double action! This is not fun and almost always does not produce attractive groups at first. Trigger jobs are available but I do not suggest having the DA weight reduced , rather have the opposing metal surfaces polished to a very smooth surface that provides a consistent pull. That is how mine is. Be careful who you have do this. They could screw it up;) . Having a full stainles pistol would be nice, but I do not think it is needed. The alloy frame, to the best of my knowledge, has not had problems. Two tone models would be the best of both worlds.

The Sig P220 is a great shooter!

Opinions differ and choices vary.

I own the Sig P220, G21 and G30.

Although I enjoy shooting the P220 (and it isn't for sale), I prefer to carry the Glocks and really shoot both much more than the P220 . . . that's just me, I may be too much of a quai-perfectionist for an unbiased opinion!

My suggestion . . . If you can rent one, do so, try it and if you really like it, why not?, . . . just strongly re-consider before you trade your Glock(s) . . . . don't do anyting to later regret!

Best Regards,
Glockguy

I really don't have anyway to rent one, but i have owned a couple of other sigs over the years, (not the p220), they worked great for me, i just wondered about the accuracy, of the P220, (which some here have already addressed), and if it was a "jamomatic" or not.

I'm still listening guys, if anyone else has any input.

Thanks to all so far who have relpied!

In both accuracy and functioning the Sig is one of the best. Almost everyone I have spoken with has said that the accuracy is the best out of the box/production combat firearm. Sure, pistols made for target shooting may have tighter groups. Others on this post have made claims of having 2" groups at 25yds. I cannot confirm or deny this; I only shoot mine off-hand. I have not held any 2" groups at 25yds. Besides, a defensive pistol is not intended to be a shooter. They need to function as flawlessly as possible. I have never had any problem with mine.

The only complaints I can think of are:

finnish- some of the blued finishes may rust
mag capacity- only 7+1 (if you need more) but fits well in the hand
weight- not the best but far from some
cost- again not the best but still reasonable
DA/SA trigger- requires some training to get used to

Some consider the size too large. It is smaller than a 1911 and a full size glock. The barrel length will take advantage of the 230 grain .45 ACP.

Recoil is not bad, maybe better than most .45s. Recoil is a subjective assessment however.

I agree with what .45kevin said earlier.

Well, my son-in-law, has now went out and bought a P220, so i guess i will have some way now to try it out. I feels great in my hands, and recoil, (although i've not shot it yet), recoil, is just not an issue with me, not in a 45acp. I don't get to hurting till i start in on some of my very hot 44 mag loads, which i have tammed way down over the years for the sake of my always hurting hands.

But the gun looks really nice, smooth clean lines, i really like the decocker, so you don't blow your backside off if you got one in the pipe, and carry mex style... i guess i just need to take it away from him for a while and go shoot it....

Thanks!

My P220 is the most accurate .45 in my collection. I have the blued version. It is slim, and light, so good for CCW. But make sure you keep it oiled regularly to prevent rusting.

.45Kevin and Screaming357G talked me into the P220ST instead of the standard P220. I will always be thankful to them. Very, very nice shooter and not heavy at all. One of my best gun purchases. Thanks guys!

Actually Kevin, if you tried carrying the Desert Eagle 44 mag. or S&W Model 29-2 w/ 6 1/2" bbl. 44 mag. around every once in a while, that P220 feels downright small! Bwahahahahahaha!;f ;f ;f

Exactly. Not only that, but no ones saying that Glocks aren't fine handguns. Just that a Sig P220 brings an awful lot to the table also. You'd be hard pressed to find better handguns anywhere for self defense than those two venerable handguns.

I love my G30 as much as my P220 (okay it's because it will take the 13rd G21 mags)
I have to think the P220 is the only double action 45acp I will ever own.

Both have reps as good pistols. And the old P220 mags hold seven rounds, with a conversion follower available. I switched all my old P220 7 round mags to eight rounds, bought three of the new eight round factory mags, and five of the new ACT eight rounders. The new mags seat much easier than the converted old mags. Again, the P220 isn't bad, and I just really prefer the G30: more accurate for me personally, more compact, and ten round standard mags.;c ;c ;c

The P-220 is more accurate, and more compact. (I measure how compact a gun is in how flat it is). The 10-round mags are the only thing the G30 has going for it over the P-220.

pistolero6869,... and , all the rest of you as well, agaain, many thanks.

I have still not gotten the chance to try out my son-in-law's P220.
All i have done is look at it.

I am hearing nothing but "good" on here so far about the gun.

Let's narrow this down for me a littl please.

some of you guys seem to favor the P220ST, while other like the regular alloy frame. I know the stainless is about 10oz or so heaiver, but for those of you who have one of these... do you carry it? or just use it at home or in the truck type thing?

Do you find it is a bit to heavy for "mex style carry?"

And is there any real accuracy, or function difference, between the two?

Thanks!

I carried the P220, and enjoyed it as a good pistol. But the long grip is harder for me to conceal; it's pokey and sticks out. Long pokey butts are more difficult to conceal, because they pokey out more than shorter butts. When I bend over at all, that pokeyness really stands out and people look at my pokey-out cover garment. ;)

Same reason my G24 grip is harder to conceal than the G23, which in turn is harder than the G27.

So, in .45 ACP, my G30-having a shorter butt, has a big advantage for me in concealability. It's also more accurate for me for some reason. And Glocks are a breeze to maintain & strip. ;c

The holster can remedy the long butt problem, but can do nothing for the thickness of the grip.

I'm a 240lb grown man...Mex carry is no problem with the ST. Just shoot a ST before you decide. The ST is way up the ladder compared to the 220. 220 is a nice pistol. 220ST is the ULTIMATE!!!;)

I've owned several P-220's over the years. Currently I've got a P-220 with a stainless slide and a hard chromed frame. It's gorgious!
Seriously, with all the thousands of rounds sent downrange with my P-220's I don't ever recall a malfunction of anykind. These P-220's are so reliable it verges of the supernatual.
If it were me I'd go with the 30oz alloy frame P-220. The all stainless P-220 is just to damn heavy. There's a big difference between 30oz and 38oz when you start packin' it around. Forget the cracked frame mullarkey stuff. That's ancient history.
You'll never wear out an alloy framed P-220 unless you shoot +P ammo constantly which you won't do anyway. Just my thoughts, John

Yeah, on the ranch, carrying the 44 vaquero around in a cross draw cowboy rig is no problem for me at all, but after picking up the P220st, (NICE GUN), but i ain't so sure that mex carry for a long period of time would be a wise choice for me with the heavier weight than the standard P220. It sure looks like a fine piece though.

I like what i am hearing so far on this post about the reliability of the P220, this sounds very good so far.

Thanks again...

P.S... Poohgyrr,... your right! "Long pokey butts," are always hard to conceal! :) LOL
