Don't know where you can see articles now, but it was big news about 2 months ago. He was a big bear rights advocate who lived in a tent with his girlfriend in the alaskan wilderness filming the bears and his CLOSE interaction with them. Apparently one got hungry one night and ate the two of them. The video was running and the whole thing was caught on tape (sound only). They found him because he missed his scheduled pickup time. The pilot decided to fly over his mapped campsight and saw what looked to be a big alaskan Brown Bear feeding on the remains of "something" next to the tent. The Alaskan DNR was notifified and a few agents went out armed with 870 12 ga. shotguns. the bear took 28 shots of mixed slugs and 00 to go down. The man and his girlfriend were found in the bear and scattered around the campsight.

The man had always said to interviewers that nobody should attempt to do what he does because most people don't understand bear behavior and could get hurt. WHoops! Guess he forgot to take his own advice.

Alaskan big bear - read the article

ALL,The pictures are of a huge bear killed in Alaska. The
last picture is of a person partially eaten by the bear- have
no doubt the last picture is of a partially eaten human- you
have been warned.

The following pictures (at bottom) are of a guy who works for
the Forest Service in Alaska. He was out deer hunting. A
large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away. The
guy unloaded his 7mm Mag Semi-automatic rifle into the bear
and it dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was
still alive so he reloaded and capped it in the head. The bear
was over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6"
high at the shoulder, 14' to the top of his head. It's the
largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course,
the game department did not let him keep it. It will
be mounted and put on display at the Anchorage airport (to
remind tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild).
Think about this - you would be level with the bear's belly
button when he stood upright, the bear would look you in the
eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional
perspective, consider that this bear, standing on its hind
legs, could walk up to an average single story house and look
over the roof. The bear had killed at least two people. His
last meal was the unlucky nature buff in the third picture
below. The Forest Service found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol
emptied. Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to
hit the grizzly with four shots (they ultimately found four 38
caliber slugs along with seven 7mm slugs inside the bear's
dead body) it only wounded the bear - and probably angered
it. The bear killed the hiker an estimated three days prior
to the bear's own death by the gun of the Forest Service

To the best of my knowledge, some/all of that post is at best questionable.

I have never heard of any semi-auto firearm chambered in 7mm Mag. For that matter I don't know of any semi firing a belted mag cartridge aside from .300WM--and that one is NOT a general sales/hunting rifle mind you. The first 3 or 4 times the photos went around, there were no "remains" photos attached.
I've seen posts on hunting forums claiming to once and for all clairy the events surrounding the photos of that big bastid griz, but I've seen no real verification. Maybe when this "largest record bear" finally makes it into Guiness or the BC Trophy book we'll know...

This reminds me of another post regarding a large snake cut open with (supposedly) a human inside; anyone with a a knowledge of snakes and geography can poke a dozen holes in the Net drivel surrounding those faked pics.

Big bear? You betcha....but I think the story behind it has, at best, been embellished as the photos circulated the Internet.

Don't know about the story etc. but the Browning BAR was and is chambered for that round.

12-16-2003, 11:12
If that's the case, then I stand corrected regarding the 7Mag semi.

Still a rotten caliber for Br'er Bear if ya ask me ;)

Bar is chambered in 7 mag and it may not be the best bear round but thats ok as he was hunting DEER

id like a link please gotta bring it to work i work in a hunting store

That bear story has circulated widely by email. Most of it is BS.

It was a conglomerate of several loose facts twisted together into one tale that lost any basis on reality.

(some very graphic pictures here, beware)

The BAR is also chambered in .300 Win. Mag. and .338 Win. Mag.
