hey academy ahs a bushnell 3x9x40 scope for 34.99. would that be a good buy for a 30-30 marlin? i've read other posts for scopes on 30-30's and know some people don't like that but i'm not a good shot with an open sight @ 100yds. how far can a 30-30 shoot accuratley and powerfully?

i wouldnt buy that scope...

if you are going to get a bushnell for a highpower rifle get one in the elite series.

ive got a elite 4200 and it is a fine scope and can hold its zero indefinately from what i have experienced shooting several hundred rounds of .308 through it since my last sight in.

the lower end bushnells, like the lower end tascos and simmons will wander off their zero when using highpowered ammo

I have an old winchester 30-30 saddle rifle with a side mounted scope. I only have a 4x scope on the rifle. I honestly wouldn't try a shot over 100yds with a 30-30 so a 4x scope is sufficient for me. Mine is a redfield scope.

You will lose too much of the great handling qualities of the lever-rifle by mounting a scope.

My advice is to get the Williams peep sights. These are much better than the factory open sights on your thutty-thutty.

I don't use it much,

But my own Marlin 30-30 has a Redfield 1-4x on it.

I consider 150-175 yards about max for a 30-30 on deer. Not much use for a 3-9 at that range.

I set my father-in-law's Marlin 30-30 up with a 4 MOA Red-Dot scope... his 'old eyes' like it & the gun does well at the 100 yard mark... the gun is also fast to shoot like that, even in the thicker stuff up close.

A 3x9 would work fine on a 30-30… I’d only question the quality of that unit though, both for optics & strength. I go no lower then Leupold now.

Well, at this stage of my life I would opt for Leupold as well. But, when I was younger I shot many a rifle with Tasco and Bushnell scopes and I never, ever had a problem. Get what you can afford. Even the cheapest scopes of today rival the Redfield and Leupolds of yesteryear. There is nothing wrong with the Academy offering and I would use it with confidencce.

While I agree that mounting a scope on a levergun kinda messes up the handling qualities of the gun I actually have one that is scoped.
I have a Marlin 30-30 with a Leupold one piece base and Leupold low mount rings holding a Leupold VXII 2x7 and couldn't be happier with it! At 50 yards it's one ragged hole accurate. At 100 yards I can consistently get 2" groups!
For PA I don't need anything else.
I do have a Winchester .375 Big Bore that I hope to someday put a Lyman or Williams receiver sight on. It's a light, sweet handling rifle that I will never spoil with a scope.
To each his own!

Get the scope, not a lot of money and it should work fine. My 30-30 is a 45 year old savage bolt action with an equally old tasco 3-9X scope on it. The gun is very well cared for and I can routinely get 1.5 to 2 inch groups at 200 yards! This is my maximum range for the 30-30.

A lot of cheap scopes out there aren’t made as well as they used to be… Tasco used to be not too bad, but their current stuff is… well, not so good.

Cheap scopes (a lot of the time they mean cheap in strength design too) mean cheap optics… cheap optics hinder low light shooting… if you’re going to be using a scope for hunting (where most shots are taken in the low light of dawn or dusk) you’ll be wanting good or higher optics. In low light you should NEVER be able to see better with your own eyes then you can when you look through your scope. Remember, looking through different scopes in a nicely lit store will almost always tell you nothing… the REAL test is in low light.

My 30-30 Marlin has had a 3-9x40mm Tasco world class scope on it for 15 years. I don't think it had any ill effects on the handling, and has taken 20+ whitetails, 2 elk, and countless coyotes out to 200 yards. In all honesty, it's probably my favorite gun....

Some folks really like the scout scope set up. XS Sights (old Ashley Outdoors) for the mounts, Burris or Leupold for the scope. ;c

I agree. XS ghost ring sights on the reciever, get the Scout Scope mount they make and stick a fixed 2.5X on it scout style. Good handling, fast sighting.
