View Full Version : My G30 guide rod broke...who else?
I was at an IDPA match today and got to fire only 2 rounds and the recoil spring/guide rod assembly fell apart. What a pain.
I realize that all things mechanical can and eventually will fail but Geez. Less that 2000 rounds, and only about 50-75 +p rounds in the total. /Every thing else was standard power Winchester White Box or Blazer.
I am not sure I was ever thouroughly conviced about the "perfection" part but I did expect longer service from such a vital part. My confidence is not broken but it is a bit wobbly at this point.
I am calling Glock tomorrow to get a new one and will probably buy one locally if I can find one and use one for a spare. Didn't think I would have to have spare parts so soon.
Bah Humbug!

Get a steel one from Wolff. If you're shooting matches get two. They are non-captured so that if one part fails you can replace just that part and not the whole assembly.
cwood.
hope i caught you in time before you call glock. they are usually really great with customer service. they might want you to send the gun in. try to avoid it. tell them /ask them if they can send you one and youll send your broke one upon reciept. (ive done with other parts.)
and ask ifyou can have 2 in case of happening again. (i bet a $100 they will give you 2)
no need to buy any parts.
in fact i called and talked to them. i thought it was my guide rod giving me probs. they just sent me one.....

Plumbum, thanks for the advice. I called them first thing Monday morning and they never asked to see the gun and offered to have one in the mail right out. I asked ifthey could send a second one "if these things are going to be breaking like this" and he said "it really shouldn't be an ongoing problem, just be sure you seat the rod down all they way on the barrel when you reassemble...but I'll send two out for you"
I am pleased with the service attitude. I'll post back to inform all of how fast the parts arrived. THANKS ALL
plumbum, I don't know about the $100 but if you get to Austin I would be happy to stand you to a meal or adult beverage.

Harlequin, Thanks for your response. As you see from my posting just above, Glock is seneding me two guide rod/spring assemblies at no charge. If this problem reoccurs, I think I may do as you suggest and get the Wolff springs, but, for now, I'll stay stock and see how they hold up.
Even with a spare, I do not wish to have this problem as the G30 is my main carry weapon. That is why I use it in IDPA, part fun, mostly to keep skills honed. I'll just have to use my daughters Ruger KP95C until the parts arrive and then it is off to the range for some confidence rebuilding. Thanks
cwood, your basically in the same vote as me with using your gun for comp. but its your main weapon right now.
i shoot p.p.c. and cause i shoot lighter loads i bought the wolff guide rod assembly and the stock spring kit and the lower spring kit. i would strongly suggest getting one even with the stock spring if you dont want to put the extended wear on your gun. the sad thing is the gun feels like it cycles/runs a million times better with the wolff.(all metal) but its one of those things i wouldnt want to take the chance of carrying it as a "modified" part ect. (for me,you may vary) when the stock one works also.
i was just messin with ya about the $100...hehehehe just glad to help. ill tell ya what since this is the first gun company ive had to deal with i hope im not disapointed if i have to call some other comp. some time. the bar is set pretty high right now.

Cwood, my G30 still has the original stock guide rod. Over 5,000, probably about 7,000+ rounds through mine. Never a problem.
I'm down in San Antonio, come on down for the Texas Tactical IDPA match Feb.1 huh? 001010, GlockBlocker, some other guys will probably be there.

Uhhh, no i don't...?
What I tried to send yo in a message was that I have been to your fine facilities several times. In fact I joined Texas Tactical several months ago (I just posted a review of my experiences in General Competition Shooting & Events under the heading of "My first try at IDPA) I really like the improved berms and enjoyed meeting the Peterson brothers. I don't recall anyone named Murphy.
Duane Hemphill was at the Austin match which is where my G30 broke (which I now think is my fault because on wrong guide rod assembly position). He is a great guy. I am sure you know "Wild" Bill Callahan. He was up here Sunday too.
I hope you can make it to the night/lowlight shoot this coming Saturday. I hope to have my new parts by then. I hope to meet you sometime. I am Carl Wood.
This is what I tried to send you in the message.
Regards, Carl
I called Glock on Monday and requested 2 recoil springs. On Friday, I received 2 recoil springs in the mail.
I'M IMPRESSED!!!PROBLEM RESOLVED---I HAVE MY G-30 BACK!!

Good. Now be sure to have the new one set in the half moon cutout.

Not to be overly sarcastic, ;), but if you're ever in a REAL bind and not some shoot 'em-up game, be sure and call Glock to send you a new, flimsyass guide rod, should yours break!
You'll find quite a few posts of the two-pc. Glock guide rods' breaking. You won't find too many posts about Wolff steel guide rods' breaking.

I didn't know that you could get the two piece guide rods that were non-captured. I thought that they came as an assembly.

Yeah, I've been pondering getting a Wolf Guiderod set up. I have more than 5000 but less than 10,000 rounds through my G 30. It still works great, but I keep hearing about the problems some of you guys have experienced.
I did replace the firing pin spring with a more powerful one from Glockmeister. It has been 100% reliable ever since. I'm still not sure if the spring was tired out or the firing pin assembly just needed cleaning. I'd never torn the G30 down that far before. Lots of gunk around the extractor and some on the firing pin works.
I had problems before shooting some old WWII surplus ammo. The primers still worked, but I had to strike some of them 3 times to get them to fire. The new spring should take care of that problem.

Not to be overly sensitive, but it did kinda sound overly sarcastic. It is not a problem but when someone says :
Well, to tell the truth....or
To be perfectly honest....or
I'm not one to tell tales, but....or
I'n not trying to make you mad, but...or
Not to be overly sarcastic, but...
It is not unreasonable to expect the exact opposite of that with which they prefaced their comment.
I'm from the gov't and I'm here to help you
No offense taken or intended.
