View Full Version : Lookin' for a .45 & the G30 seems the best choice
I know I'm preachin' to the choir here, but I'm looking for my first .45 pistol.
Some say go 1911. That's cool - I like the way they look and feel, but I can't get over the fact that so many people talk about having the 1911s "tuned" and "fitted" and needing Wilson mags before they are reliable for carry. That bothers me. I've "tuned" and "fitted" muscle cars, and the things can be money pits. I don't want that in a carry gun.
Some say Sig or H&K. That seems fine, too. However, I can't get over the reliability and simplicity of my G19 (not to mention bang for the buck), and so a G30 seems like the natural progression.
Somebody please tell me why I shouldn't get a G30 before it's too late! ;G
Sorry, I think it IS too late at this point. Besides night sights, what are the other indispensible upgrades? By way of comparison, all I did to my G19 is Meps, a bit of sandpaper tape in a few key places, two preban FML full capacity mags, and a Galco IWB holster.
I'm thinking Win Ranger Ts, too, for ammo.
Cheers! ;c

Mine's stock, out of the box. Shoots great, accurate, reliable, easy to point, good trigger, no bells or whistles. Have shot it in steel plate competition and it's a winner. Just add a good holster and you're ready to go.

I'm a 1911 guy, but the G30 gets my nod as the best compact .45ACP CCW gun on the market. You may find a .45 that's small, one that's lightweight, one that holds a lot of rounds, one that's reliable as a stone axe, or one that is tough as nails, but you won't find all of those attributes in one gun until you pick up a G30.
The HK USP Compact is a fine gun as well, but it has a different manual of arms. It's sort of like the Glock 30 for people who like external safeties and/or cocked-and-locked carry.
SIGs are great, too...utterly reliable and very accurate. The Glock has the edge in simplicity and toughness/finish durability, though.
1911s these days are generally very reliable. My last three Kimbers and Springfields have had exactly zero failures between them, feeding ball or hollowpoints of any shape. The 1911 has a history second to none, and unbeatable trigger and ergonomics.
You can always get both. I happily alternate between my Springfield and the Glock 30, and they get along well.

It's too late. Get a 30.
A search on mods will get you tons of advice. Some people stay stock, some go all out, some only use what they think is necessary. I suggest you try some different mods after doing a search and see what you like.
It is possible of course that you will modify your setup many times (and possibly waste some money) before you get what you like. I'll be trying some new things out this weekend that I didn't think I'd like. Still might not. Only one way to find out.

My G30 has AO Big Dot Express Sights, JHPs and a Comp-Tac Gurkha IWB holster. Aside from that it's stock, and I'm perfectly happy, nearly five years later. :)
So aside from sights and ammo, you really don't need anything. Plugs, new guide rods, etc....... fine if you want them, but it comes ready to go out of the box.

I'm in Kansas.
I was thinking I'd only get one .45.
I was thinking I'd like to have a .45 for fun, and for MAYBE CCW, if Ks. ever gets it.
I've considered getting another .45.
A bigger frame, just for the range.
BUT DAMMIT, THE G30 IS GOOD FOR ALL MY USES THAT I JUST CAN'T JUSTIFY SPENDING MORE MONEY ON A DIFFERENT GUN RIGHT NOW!.
Eh, it's all around good.
I can get a G30 for $545 out the door. That works out to $509.35 plus tax.
TopGlock is $509 plus shipping and any FFL fees. Glockmeister is $512 plus shipping and any FFL fees.
Anybody got a less expensive source (although my local guy is great to deal with)?
Thanks!

My first .45 was a G30 - NUFF SAID. However, my next .45 will be a Springfield Armory GI model 1911. Again, NUFF SAID...
The G-19 barks like my mother-in-laws "maltese" ...
The G-30 "woofs" like a full throated Carolina blue-tick on a moonless night.
That (perceived) difference - ALONE - is why I love (and carry) the "big-dawg".
That being said, the 19 will always have a place in my safe.
-wordless poets club - :-)
My first 45 was the Glock-21. My second was the Springfield WWII Mil Spec 1911 A1. I'm happy with both those guns and the order I got them. One thing I can say about the 1911 is that it has improved my shooting ability with my glocks. From my practice with the 1911 I have overcome anticipating recoil and too much trigger. For a while I was consistantly hitting low and left with my G-21 (too much trigger). I would overcompensate and hit high and right. I put my 21 down when I got the 1911 and put about 1000 rounds through it. When I started shooting the 21 again I was consistantly printing 2 " groups. Anyway I just put my 3rd 45 on layaway, A Kimber Ultra Carry. I've fallen for the 45 acp and I want a good carry gun that's as easy to conceal as my glock 26. My next 45 will be the Glock 30 or 36. I'll let you know this spring.
But to address your post, Go with the Glock first. I'm glad I did. The 30 is very popular but I found the 21 fit me better at the time. I wanted a full size 45 first. Now that I have the fullsize 21 and 1911 I'm going for the ultra compact . I wish Glock made a true ultra compact 45 but they don't. Next for me will be the compact size 30 or 36.
I think you won't go wrong with either choice.

I say go for that one that's $545 out the door. TopGlock may be $509, but they'll charge $15 for shipping and tack on anywhere from $30-50 for the FFL fees. That brings you to at least $555 with TopGlock.
