View Full Version : New Used M30 (need help)
Well I am now a proud owner of a Model 30. I went ahead and bought the used one with the nightsights, that I mention in the thread "M30 for under $500". I took it to the range and fired 190 rounds through it last night. Everything went perfect, except for a few piss poor 185gr reloads I got from the range. I shot 30 Winchester WB, 10 Left over Wolf Ammo, 100 reloaded 230gr (supplied by the range), and 50 185gr (supplied by the range). Get this The 185gr reloads had a larger muzzle flash than the 230gr. I know the grain of the bullet has nothing to do with that, but I think that the person reloading their shell didn't put enough powder in the 185gr. I had 2 miss fires. I removed the bullet and the primer hold a dent where the fire pin hit. I rechambered the round and it fired. The second time this happened, I took the round up to the guy at the counter and complained. He had me to shoot it through thier model 30, and of course it fire just like mine earlier. I bought a another box of 230gr reloads and all 50 went smooth. I think that it is a problem with their reloads, If anyone has an opinion or have a suggestion I would appreciate hearing it. Thanks
I think from no one I will go to Wal-Mart and buy the 100 count box of Winchesters for $20.

Ammo is available on the internet cheaper.
I noticed my last range session, where I had the chance to fire several different rounds, that the 185gr HydraShocks I was shooting had a noticeable flash. None of the others did, including the 230gr HydraShocks. Strange.
Two misfires in the same session would certainly be the reloads. I've fired several thousand through mine since I've had it and never one FTF, all factory loads.
Thanks Harlequin. I guess nobody else has any thoughts on this topic. I am going to the range tonight and fire some factory WWB. I must say that I have enjoyed my 30. I haven't recieved My carry Permit yet, it should only take a few more weeks. A lot of people here in Tennessee have been receiving their permit in 3 to 6 weeks instead of the 90 days that the state has. I hope to get mine soone. I will post how the range goes tonight.
it is the weight of the bullet that gives the flash.... esp if it was from the same manufacturer.
the heavier bullet has more complete combustion grain for grain of powder.
5.6gn of 231 behind a 200gn flashs more than
a 230 gn with the same charge weight and the 230 is actually faster...
but in the end powder does have a bigger affect on flash.
Thank you. I didn't know that. I probably sound like an idiot. This is my first handgun purchase. I have also been a rifle and shotgun man, and that is because I was to young to buy a handgun. But now I am reading and listening to everything I can that will further my knowledge. I really appreciate this forum, it has helped me a great deal.
Well I shot 95 rounds of the "Winchester 100 count Value Pack" that you get at Wal-Mart for $20. Is that what everybody refers to as WWB (Winchester White Box)? Anyways, needless to say it was Glock Perfection. I really love the controlled recoil of the 30, it is a pleasure to shoot. I also shot my friend Beretta 9mm and the recoil isn't a lot different than the 30. I am very pleased.
I called Glock and they ran my SN and told me that the gun was made in November of 1998. I was wondering if it is about time for my night sights to start going out? I was told by my local gun store that the usually last around 6 years, if that is the case then this November with be it 6th birthday. They are the Trijicon Night Sights. I am fixing to do a search of GT for the topic of Trijicon Night Sights and see if this question has already been answered.
Sorry to take up so much space but I wanted to report on my New Used 30.

Yes, WWB is Winchester White Box, from Wal Mart.
Trijicons should last about twice that long. Use them until they go out.
You would only be an idiot for not asking questions. That's how you learn. Now that you've made a gun purchase you aren't swimming with the kiddies anymore. Just remember that the search function is your friend. You'll learn a lot here!

most of the cheaper boxes only hold 50 rounds.
AND there is no shipping or handling at Wmart.
Jason,
I would think that you probably did have a few hard primers in those gun store reloads. Personally, I would never shoot someone else's reloads. You don't know how carefully they were loaded, how old the brass is, etc. That's just asking for trouble.
That being said, it's also possible that your striker (firing pin) channel is a little gummed up since you bought the gun used. It may be in need of a detail strip and cleaning. With the gun unloaded and the trigger pulled, if you shake the gun backwards and forwards you should hear the striker "rattling" inside the striker channel. If your channel is gummed up with oil reside and burnt powder, the striker likely will not be free to move. This can lead to light strikes. Just a thought.
If you haven't done so before, you might want to go ahead and detail strip your slide and clean everything out real well. You can find illustrated instructions on how to do so under the Free Tech Info section here:

Remember not to leave any oil in the striker channel, you want it to be completely degreased and dry. Good luck with your 30. It's a great gun.

I would stick with the walmart white box 45acp, not very expensive and never had a problem. I got lazy and stopped reloading, if I did not reload it myself I would not feel comfortable shooting it, just my .02.
Jason,
I too picked up a used G30 and love it! I reload .45 for competitive shooting but the $20 Winchester box of 100 is what I shoot to goof off and to increse my brass collection. The range where I shoot sells Atlanta Arms reloads but it is more exepensive even with my discount than the Walmart stuff.
I reloaded about 50 rounds with Winchester primers and of the 50 about 10 failed to fire. Of those 10, 3 or so fired on the 2nd try. On a second visit to the range I had 4 or 5 more fail so I ran them through my Colt and they worked fine. The key lesson here is to never carry reloaded ammo in you gun for protection purposes!
I am going to replace the firing pin spring in my G30 and see if that helps but I have also switched to Federal primers (which most of the people I have spoken with prefer over Winchester). The downside is that the Federals are much softer and I had one go off in my press which made one heck of a mess (blew the entire primer tray to shreds).
As for your Trijicons, I have a set on another gun that were installed in 1990 or so and they are still bright and work well.
Enjoy the G30!
