Yesterday, I sent an email to Steyr Mannlicher asking about when the M-A1 will hitting the US, and this is what I got back.

Dear Sir,
thank you for your interest in our new pistol;
it will be available in the US after ATF importation approval, that will
take approx another month and another 6 to 8 weeks to get the appropriate
import license issued.
Thus the M-A1 should be available around mid April.
For priceing information please contact our US operation

Steyr Mannlicher USA, Inc.
311 South Hwy 45 Alt.
West Point, MS 39773
Telephone (662) 492-8924
Fax (662) 492-8996

I called the number and spoke to a gentleman, Mr. Rosetti, (forgive any spelling error) about the pricing. He told me that they just took over the importation from Dynamit-Nobel and do not have pricing established as of yet, as they are still gearing up. He was very helpful and offered to email the pricing information once it becomes available. If my conversation with him was any indication of how the customer service will be, the new Steyr is going to do VERY well. They seemed like great guys to do business with. I'll post the info as soon as he sends it.

Did you get anymore details on available calibers and models? I assume they will have the three primary calibers......9mm, .40S&W, .357sig, but I was hoping they would offer a .45acp and 10mm lineup.

Here's the pic from the website "new Steyr"

and here is the link to Steyr's website (http://www.steyr-mannlicher.com/index.php?id=99) and you should beable to find the answers there. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like there will be a 10mm or a .45.

Man, I'd love to try one out in .45!!!

I sure hope they market it better than they did the M series. I loved mine, but getting it worked on or finding accessories for it was close to impossible.

Is it supposed to be much different than the M's? It looks very similar.

I sure hope they market it better than they did the M series.

Steyr lost their factory (they were renting space from BMW and BMW decided they wanted the facility so Steyr had to find a new place to make their pistols). Then the relationship with GSI ended (I have no idea why) so they had to find a new importer.

Since they have all those problems solved I imagine they will kick into high gear with their marketing plan for the US.

I really wish they would consider a 10mm (which would be easier for them to do then a .45 ... just reem the chamber of the .40 and maybe modify the magazine for the longer cartridge and you have a 10mm ... I've kicked around the idea of doing a conversion myself)

Does anyone know if this pistol will use the same triangular-type sights as were on the M-series pistols? I found those difficult to use very well.

The only difference between the M and the M-A1 is the grip frame, the slide (including the sights) are the same.

The new models will have the triangle/trap sights, but the optiona; night sights are standard notch/post.

Zundfolge, have you had you hands on one of these yet? I'd love to know how they compare to the original.

Awesome! It looks like they fixed the two features I hated about the M series, the grip and they useless light rails. I'll have to see one before I can say if it will replace a Glock 17 on my list though.

I know next to nothing about the subject, however I thought Steyr lost its U.S. distributership and was having difficulty acquiring another. Has this all been worked out? Can someone fill me in?

No, I haven't ... but I'm dieing to :) A local gun shop I frequent expects to get a couple in and they are supposed to call me when they do.

GSI used to be Steyr's importer and distributor for the US. The are no longer (I don't know why ... I have heard complaints about customer service from GSI, but I never had any problems with them and I don't know if it was Steyr or GSI that ended the distributorship).

Their new importer is Dynamit-Noble ( http://www.dnrws.com/index2.html although they don't have any handgun info on their site) and their factory autorized service guys are Diamond Trail Shooter's Supply ( www.usasteyr.com ).

I don't know a lot about Dynamit-Noble, but when I contacted them about their new status as Steyr importer the said they weren't going to import the handguns (they acted like either they didn't want to get into the evil handgun business, or handguns where benieth them) ... I think Steyr made it a requirement and I get the impression that Dynamit-Noble are one of those companies that believes the 2nd Amendment is about trapshooting and deer hunting and not about self defense or the "refreshment of the tree of liberty".

At any rate, my assessment of Dynamit-Noble is based on one email exchange, so I may have misjudged them. I don't care ... as long as they keep importing these great little handguns I'll be happy :)

They're a buncha hypocrites.......Dynamit-Nobel is one of the world's largest makers of explosives, gunpowder, etc (Mr. Nobel of the Peace Prize invented Dynamite...lost a couple family members in construction to nitroglycerin getting a little unstable and BOOM).

Yeah, we don't want to sell those evil pistols.....we'll just blow you up with some nice safe Semtex.

Is that MSRP? If so, then subtract $50-$100 off of that for a realistic price.

Just for all of your info... the new pistols in 9mm have fixed the ejector problem :p

Which means the old M_Series should be able to order new Ejectors :)

The ejector on the old M9 is my only complaint... other than that the pistol is incredible.

I will be keeping my M9 (waiting for a fix) and getting a new one in .40 (or.45acp if they ever come out hehehe) :D

I assume the mention of pistol without safety is the internal lock?

striderglock

Why does the mag look like it has a finger extension on it? Is that the mag, or part of the frame?

tggt04
04-07-2004, 11:41
It is part of the frame... ergonomics? No idea why, the magazines drop free very easily.

The safety that is now "optional" is the trigger drop down... its just physically blocks the trigger from moving.

Internal safety is similar to glock (as I am sure you are aware)... you rack the slide and the pistol rests in a half-cocked mode until you pull the trigger which completes the move rearward and releases the firing pin.

It's really nice actually... I have owned a G17... and from my memory the M9 is much more refined and solid in construction; but definitely not as easy to dissasemble (there is one spring that is a real pain to put back.)

tggt, thanks. I wish they had brought that grip panel all the way down, it looks bad and bugs me. Although, I will probably still get one. :)

That's good news that sill arse internal lock is optional.

I assume they are still tennifer treated?

AMX
04-07-2004, 13:13
It's NOT the internal lock that's optional, it's the manual safety.

The integrated lock is misleading in name... it's not really locked at all.

A wedge of metal, the 'catch' will in no way allow the half-cocked 'lever' to move forward... that is until the trigger bar is pushed rearward by your finger. Only then will the catch slip under the lever and allow the firing pin to release.

It hard to visualize, I didn't understand it from the diagrams... but when I got to take mine apart it all made sense. These parts are polished metal and very solid (unbreakable and big... not little notches or tabs.)

I will post some pics this weekend... when you see how it works first hand you will say "Wow!"

If I were allowed, I'd feel 100% comfortable with that being carried concealed with a round chambered; if I were allowed. ;u

The integrated lock is the little piece at the right side of the gun that can be turned with a special key; it blocks the trigger and prevents disassembly of the gun.

Are these guns double action like the Glock, or are they single action? Before reading this thread, I was lead to believe the pistol was single action.

tggt04
04-08-2004, 23:09
Yes, I was describing the wrong thing I guess... hehehe

I never use that integrated lock. I can't see how it would ever cause problems... plastic knob under spring pressure... it won't accidently "lock you out" if that was a concern.

litework: they are like the glock, double action.

Scroll down a bit, until you find the Steyr M9 at the left, and check out the price.
688.80 Euros.
That's about 826$ - actually a bit more.
In the country where these things are made.

For some reason, I feel that I hate someone.

BTW, on page 3, they offer a Steyr S9 for the same price, and on page 1, a Glock 17L for 750 Euro (900$).

I am gonna bump this.

Anyone have or seen an A1 model yet?

The redesign has addressed all my misgivings about the pistol (maybe mostly aesthetic).

Love to hear…

The Steyr action is very similar to the Glock action (which many will argue isn't really double action ... and they have a point).

The Steyr and Glock are "Double Action" according to the BATFe but in reality they are sort of a "one and a half" action ... the slide moving to the rear "half cocks" the gun so it not purely double action in the traditional sense. But in the sense that the trigger performs more then one action, that would technically make them "double action" (so when you run into one of those "Glocks is single action" guys ... don't buy their hype either).

Unbeknown to me I purchased one of the first M40 A1 new model Steyrs, got it at a gun show in Midland, Texas for 425.00 new, with hard case and 2 10 rounders, posted pics under thread "cheated on glock" in this forum.
didn't know it was new, however, I did keep thinking that the gun had an external safety, other than the trigger :)
