Very nice DJ. Your AR looks just like mine does in my head. I want to get that ACE stock. I'm still stuck trying to decide if I want the EOTech or Aimpoint. I'm going to pick up a hogue grip...is that what's on yours? And the TangoDown vertical grip is on my list.
What kind of RAS is that? I think I'm going to get the YHM rail system....it fits my budget.
And what is the plaque looking thing on the right side of the magwell?
DJ Niner
01-28-2004, 04:31
Mine started out as a Bushmaster 25th Anniversary Carbine (that's what the logo on the side of the magwell says). I took off most of the shiny nickel/chrome-plated parts and replaced them with standard stuff. The pistol grip that comes on it is an Ergo grip. Very comfortable, thinner than a normal grip (side-to-side), and it places your hand a bit farther to the rear to improve your finger placement on the trigger.
The free-float-rail tube that is standard on it (and Bushmaster's new Modular Carbine) IS the YHM, I believe. I added a Bushmaster folding vertical grip, low-profile rail covers (top and sides), a Sure-Fire G2 in a Leupold QRW ring, and the Aimpoint Comp ML2 in a single, vertical-split ring on a Bushmaster Mini-riser.
Here's a "before" picture...

Here is a buddy of mine with one of my ARs.
I took this pic last spring, shortly after he enlisted in the US Army. He went into Basic last July or August, and is being shipped to Iraq in March. He said he loves the M4, but he said he qualified relatively poorly. He scored well (expert?) with the M9, but said he would prefer to carry his G22 (which he purchased from me) if it were allowed.

Beautiful! I really want to get a can. Hopefully after september I can put one on my post ban(fingers crossed).

Nice set-up! That's similar to one I've seen in one of the mail-order catalogs; can't remember which one right now, though. How do you like that handguard-replacement rail system? Does the sight hold zero well when mounted on it?

Thanks DJ Niner, I'm happy with the rail (Knights Arm. RAS), along with the vert. grip. It's not rock solid, but it works. I get alot more control during rapid fire over the stock handguards. I've also been trying to find someone to make some clamps to mount to the side rails so that I could mount some extra mags on the gun as well if I wanted to. I think a LEO that carries a 9mm carbine on duty could benefit from this as you could have up to 128 rounds (4 mags) of 9mm with the gun at all times in this configuration.
In the original configuration with 16" barrel and the RAS, never had a problem holding a zero, dead on. The aimpoint right now is zeroed for the DOE upper @15yrds, so POI is about 3"high @ 15yrds using the 10 1/2"er in current config. BTW, I just got the 10.5" upper back last week. Had it chopped, so Friday was its first workout.
Also I must say, nice hardware everyone, even the red AR. Looken sharp!!

The picture quality isn't that great because it was taken with a disposable camera. It is a RRA A4 20” varmint rifle, with an Armalite 1 piece scope mount and Harris bipod. The sling is now gone. ;f The scope is an 8.5x-25x 40mm Leupold Vari-X 3 with sunshade and Butler Creek end caps. I installed an extended charging handle latch because of the position of the scope. The lower has a 2-stage Jewell trigger. E-mail me if you have any questions.

Very nice. I think a RRA varminter will probably be my next rifle. What kind of grouping do you get and what distances do you shoot at? I can't decide if the 20" is sufficient or if I want to go with the 24".
That's a gorgeous rifle Chris  Wise move going with a Rock River.

Mindonmatter, an RRA varminter is my next project too. Maybe we should do a group buy ;f

I've had the rifle since August and have only put 40 rounds of win white box (55 gr) through it. That was for barrel break in. In TN, the weather has been bad the last few months, with my studies and work, I haven't had time to test any of my reloads in it. With all case prep and other voodoo magic I put into my rifle ammunition, it should shoot very well once I finish breaking in the barrel and get it on paper at 100 yards. That will also be good practice for me, since it has been a long time since I've shot for groups. The longest distance I will be shooting is 200 yards, but mostly at 100 and 150. I too was debating on which barrel length to get. I decided on the 20" because it will be stiffer, easier to carry, and will put less stress on the upper. If getting the 24" is what will make you happy, then that is the right choice. I bought the lower first. I shopped around and found the exact upper I wanted. I installed a Jewell trigger, which is perfect. Get the rifle that is exactly the one you want. I have spring break during the first week of March. Hopefully then I will be able to do some serious shooting and see exactly what it will do with the different loads I have worked up. I am using the 69 gr matchking made by Sierra bullets. I'll keep you guys up to date on the results when I get time to put my best effort into shooting it. I shoot 5 groups with 5 shots in each. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments. Thank you for taking the time to view my rifle.

That's great BoogerSnax(okay, the names going to take some getting used to ;)). Like you said in another thread....it's pointless, waste of money, and I'd absolutely love to shoot it :) Actually, I don't think it's useless or pointless. Just not very practical I guess. I have "compressed" my trigger spring, which makes it lighter and easier to bump.

I have to ask. I see MagPuls on a lot of rifles. How much advantage do they actually give? I've thought about getting a few just to protect the bottom of my mags while shooting, but I can't see how they improve ablitiy to change mags. Isn't it fastest to just let the mag drop out of the rifle? Or am I missing the point.
MStarmer
02-06-2004, 11:25
Good question. Their primary use is pulling them out of the pouch, as it gives you something to grab onto. In the instructions that come with them (a small book) they get into numerous reloading techniques using them, letting a spare hang from a finger when firing so it is ready, etc... They have quite a few uses. I must admit I bought them more for the mag protection when I let them drop, and the way they look. They also come in colors so you can code for different types of ammo.

I've been kicking around the idea of building a couple of Colt uppers like yours for my build projects. Since you have a plain muzzle it would be pretty easy to add an A2 hider in September.
Do you mind answering a couple of questions about yoru rig? Like all new Colts it as a standard front pushpin, right? Also, is the barrel 1/7ROT or 1/9ROT? The ROT isn't critical to me either way, I'm mainly curious.
Thanks in advance :) It's always nice to see a fellow Colt owner.

VTDefender,
Nice "kit". :)
How many times would you say you've loaded and fired a complete mag-load of ammo through that Beta C-Mag? What's the reliability record with yours?
Glocknroll9,
Who makes that free-floating handguard that's on your AR? What's it made of, aluminum?
Thanks in advance for info, both of ya...

I've dumped the beta about a dozen times. Half through my AR and half through a select fire FN FNC. It's functioned perfectly but either mine was a factory defect or they just aren't that strong.
Mine fell off a counter about 3' onto thin carpeting and broke in half..cost me $100 to have the body replaced :(

It's by far the most fun to shoot of my AR's. I'm heading down to MA in a couple weeks to try it out on a full-auto lower ;a

I'm afraid you can't legally do that.
It sounds like fun, so it must be banned.

I'm only going to bring 200 rounds or so. I've put about 1000 rounds through the upper at this point so I have piles of brass waiting to be tumbled. GOtta get my act together and get a press ASAP if I'm going to keep shooting this sucker a lot.

LToled,
If you want a bit more detail in your pictures, put the rifle on a darker background so the camera won't pick up so much light from the white wall; or lock your flash in the "on" position so it forces the the camera to use it even though the camera doesn't "think" it should.
Or if you have really understanding neighbors, take an outdoor pic; indirect (not full sunlight) natural light is best.
From what I can see, looks cool, though...
Here is the front sight off one of mine and a little Colt 9mm SBR.

It’s a cute, fun little thing to shoot. The only reason I bought it was so I’d have something to mount Gentech’s TALON SD (http://www.gem-tech.com/TALON.html) on to. Still don’t have the Talon but I love the little arf all the same.

Very nice! Is that one of those desert-type-camo-from-the-factory Bushy carbines, or did you have that done later?
If it's the factory job, how durable does the camo finish seem to be? Does it chip/peel/rub off at all?
I'm thinking about adding a set of camo furniture to one of mine; just trying to get some first-hand input...
Thanks!
Nope, it is all from the factory and so far (knock on wood!) it will stay that way.

Why is it that most people remove their AR15 carrying handle? Isn't suppose to be the signature feature of AR15/M16 family? I keep mine on even though I have a scope. It is very nice looking and easier to aim that way; I don't have to lower my head as much to look through the scope.

You could give me the KAC Monday through Wednesday, and you can have the ACOG on Friday and the weekend.
We could alternate Thursdays just to make it fair...
Although, removing your forend is a tad more complex than removing my ACOG ;g

I can only speak for myself, but for me having an optic directly on the receiver is easier to use than an optic on the carry handle. The exception to this rule (for me) is the carry handle mounted ACOG on one of my Rock River A2 CARs. That setup is truly a joy to shoot, and I have instant access to the iron sights too.
Everything has tradeoffs though. Consider the following three setups:
Trijicon ACOG TA11D flattop mounting:
http://home.comcast.net/~cjan99999/M4_acog2.JPG
Advantages:
-Optic close to bore
-No cheekpiece required
-Can co-witness to irons with the proper optic (like Yojimbo's EOTech for example). My magnified optic will not co-witness.
Disadvantages:
-Optic must be removed to use backup irons (unless you use an unmagnified optic like an EOTech or Aimpoint).
Trijicon TA11 carry handle mounting:
http://home.comcast.net/~cjan99999/Rra_acog1.JPG
Advantages:
-Instant transition from optic to irons
Disadvantages:
-Increased height over bore
-If cheekpiece is required iron sights may not be useable
Leupold 3-9x40 carry handle mounted picatinny rail mounting:
http://home.comcast.net/~cjan99999/HBAR_leupold.JPG
Advantages:
-Easy removal
-Retain carry handle
Disadvantages:
-Extreme height over bore
-Cheekpiece required for proper cheek weld
-Cheekpiece makes using iron sights impossible
Obviously what works for me isn't the answer for everyone else, and everyone's weapons are setup differently. My observations are purely my own, and based only on my experience with my own equipment.
I'm not trying to knock one method or another-I'm simply trying to highlight some of the tradeoffs :)

Leupold 3-9x40 carry handle mounted picatinny rail mounting:
http://home.comcast.net/~cjan99999/HBAR_leupold.JPG
This is my setup for A3 with 24-inches barrel. I keep it just like that and remove the entire top receiver when I use my other top receiver with a 20-inches barrel. The only different is that I have a Bushnell scope that is super good for long range shooting. I usually shoot 300 to 400 yards with my 24-inches barrel setup. As for the 20-inches barrel setup, I use it for 100 to 150 yards, which is about as far as I can see clearly without any optical help.
Trijicon TA11 carry handle mounting:
http://home.comcast.net/~cjan99999/Rra_acog1.JPG
I would like to get this setup too.
For me, it is super easy to just lower my head a little bit to use the scope. I have a friend who got a setup where he can shoot his FAL without even lowering his head in standing position. The guy is only 5'6" and he doesn't like to look like a crouching midget shooting a giant gun.

Thank brother.
What do you mean when you said that the ironsight can't be use if the cheekpiece is require? Are you talking about the front sight or the rear sight. I like the Fulton and Les Baer front sight because it can be flipped up and down. My A3 can't do that. I am happy with my setup because I don't like to tinker with it much. These are my good shooting guns. I may get a Eagle Arm receiver and start doing stuffs to do for a showgun. Of course, few people have respect for EA because it does look cheap. I figure as much aftermarket parts will be on the gun, people won't even notice the receiver.

On my Leupold rig both the front and rear sights are blocked because of the cheekpiece. The cheekpiece raises my head up, so I can't get it low enough to access them.

Quantico Arms sells Eagle Arms and Armalite. The price is a lot diffrent. The finish on Eagle Arms seems to be very plain. Actually, it looks more like an Airsoft AR than a real AR. I don't know about quality because I do not own one. Yes, Armalite do own Eagle Arms. The price for Eagle Arms AR is about 600 dollars whereas Bushmaster is about 1000 at gun shop. I am not even going to talk about Colt because I don't do guns that aren't compatible with other brands.

Eagle Arms is a division of Armalite. Quantico sells both because they are essentually the same company. Kind of a high end/low end type of thing. I don't own a complete Eagle Arms but I did buy 3 stipped lowers and they are just as nice as some of my other "respected" brands. If their uppers are any thing like their lowers then they too are just as nice as your "respected" brands.

I am going to get the complete Eagle Arms lower receiver and a stripped upper receiver. Then I'll get all the flashy gears. Can anyone point me out to a good source of aftermarket kits such as rail, lighting, stock, etc. A good site with good pictorial description would make it very easier to decide. I know tire.com has this customize section where customers can customize their car tires and wheels using the exact make and model of their car. Something like that on a gun accessary site wouldn't be a bad idea.

There is actually a pretty funny story behind that AR (at least I think that's the one) :)
It belongs to to a forum regular named DevL over at AR15.com. DevL is extremely knowledgeable about ARs, and frequently helps people out when they are having problems.
That gun is his response to all of the "gear mongers" who trick out their weapons to the max. He wanted to see just how much crap he could bolt on ;f
If you take a look closely at that rig, you will see literally thousands of dollars worth of accessories. A Surefire laser for example retails for about $800.
He has more stuff on that one weapon than most of us have on five.

Hey apxpred,
How did you paint your gun? You must be loaded with money to have guns to paint like that. Too rich for me.
He He Ya it took a little while to get the courage to do it. I spend time over @ ar15.com, Hawkeye & NewARguy did a thread where they painted their rifles up using Krylon paint & they came out great. So a buddy & I painted up our AR's one day. We de-greased, taped off everything we didn't want painted (blue masking tape is the best IMO, ear plug cut in 1/2 in barrel) & then soaked the paint cans in hot tap water until they were nice & warm, layed them out on some cardboard & started the painting our pattern, I didn't lay any borders between colors but decided to let them blend.Patience in letting it dry is needed. The painting of my EOtech caused me some pause, but I got over it. FWIW my buddy later decided to do some upgrades to his AR (GG&G handguard ect.) so he stripped it all off using laquer thinner, I heard that brake fluid works pretty good too. Here are the pics of the AR's that Hawkeye & NewARguy posted.

Heres my pre-ban 20in with a vortex flash hider on it. I havent had a chance to shoot it yet. Maybe later this week. The photos I took for some reason the upper came out looking darker then the lower.

I think I have built enough 223. I am concentrating on 308 and 300 whisper. I am getting ready for my Mill and lathe so I can do some Zero forgings. I am also going to start FAL's they seem like fun.
The only other I might buy built is a Accuracy International, but I am debating on building that one also......$$$$$$$$$$$$$ will tell

All I want for Christmas is a 6.8...
GizDog, is that a Harris bipod adapter on the bottom rig?
If so, what brand is it and how do you like it?
Thanks in advance, and thanks for posting those pics :)
It's an FA, from Brownell's. Actually, it sucks. It only works on my, out of spec, FA handguard rail. If I were to do it again I would get the Yankee Hill for about $10 more.
I don't like the idea of dedicating a bipod for the ARMS mount but that's probably the slickest one I've seen. But for $80 it better be.

I just don't see the point of lugging around a longer and heavier barrel for a 223. I get MOA out to 250 or so with my 16" ARs. For longer shots I'll grab my 308.

WTF, it's got a little EBR in it somewhere.
Just figured I would give this thread a bump with my new addition.
Great looking rig Britt! What are the specs? Is the upper an LMT? How do you like the RASII?
Etc ;f
Two AR's, two FALs and a Mossberg 590:

Thanks! :)
No not a LMT, although I would love to have one. It is:
-Bushmaster preban lower
-Bushmaster M4 14.5" upper with 5 slot phantom FS
-RAS II
-ARMS #40
-Finished by Walter Birdsong in his Black T
I like the RAS II so far but I haven't had a chance to shoot it. I just got it together on Tuesday. Very very sturdy though.
I got the Lower from my uncle which was pretty scratched up along with a well used RAS II from his friend. I then bought a new lower parts kit and new BM upper and send the whole thing to walter to be refinished. The action is so smooth you would have to feel it to believe it. Plus it looks better than a brand new rifle. I put my #40 on it off another rifle so I can shoot it this weekend. I also have a NIB #40A that come a couple days ago. I am going to sell the new one and purchase a LMT rear BUIS and have it finished by Walter along with a old sig p225 I just bought.
I am still trying to decide between a aimpoint and a eotech. I already had one aimpoint so I think I will try the Eotech. I blew my acog budget on this rifle and the p225.
James
Well, it came out freaking gorgeous my friend!
From here it looks like Walter did one heck of a nice job, and it's also apparent that you did your part as well with the setup.
I was thinking LMT because they're known for their deep, perfect finishes. Every LMT upper I've ever touched was flawless-much like your rifle.
I predict a whole lot of enjoyment ahead for you. I'm still struggling to make a decision on how to freefloat my newest upper, a 16" A3 6721 Colt. Your new rig just made my decision a little easier I think.
Thank you for that! ^c
Congratulations again-I'd be very proud to have that rifle in my collection.
Edited to add: Sarge and KY23-between your pics and Britt's I have an acute case of rifle envy. Sadly, there is no known cure (that doesn't involve melting my Visa card) ;f
AR envy? That is why I don't have any credit cards, I wouldn't be able to control myself.
I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend Walter to do any refinish work on any firearms you might have. I have never seen anyone in the firearm industry take such painstaking care and pride in their work. Not to mention he is one super nice guy. Everytime I have called the shop he has answered and talked to me for at least 10 min. It is such a pleasure calling someone without having them act like you are bothering them because you want to spend money with them.
Best $210 dollars I have EVER spent.
Best thing about the finish? It doesn't pick up lint from your cleaning cloth:)

Here's a new picture of my wifes after a paint job. It started life as a RRA Tactical Entry Carbine. It now sports Cav Arms furniture, Arms#40 (with AO same plane rear) and an EOTECH. The Cav Arms furniture ended up being more of a Salmon Pink than red. VERY unhappy with the color.
Painted two days ago with the new Krylon Fusion spray paint for plastics. I washed the surfaces with hot water and Castrol Super Clean about 3 time. I think it turned out pretty good for a $4 can of spray paint. I wish I would have done that in the first place instead of buying the Cav Arms crap...
If you scroll back I posted a pic of both our AR's in here and you can see just how "Pink" hers used to be. She was looking more of a candy apple red.

RRA, chrome lined barrel, muzzle brake. I now have an arms #40 flip up rear sight and a sling for it. Shot it today actually. Only put about 300 rounds through it but not one malfunction so far. My wife shot it today, she loved it.

Jene,
Great pic. Although I found something I thought was funny. With the sling angled down and to the right that goes "off picture" and with the wall socket, with a plug in it, where the cord angles in proximity, it looks like you've got the words first Electric AR-15 and I wanted to ask, is it "Energy Effecient (tm)"? ;)
