View Full Version : Best way to install taclight/laser on AR
Great forum. I thought it was for black powder enthusiast.
Anyway, I have a pre-stupidban Olympic CAR Commando (I think) model with an Aimpoint sight on it. I haven't shot this thing in years and took it out to our range the other day and fell in love with it again. I must have got a good one cause it shoots like a dream.
I was thinking of mounting a M6 to it and was wondering about the best way to do so. That is, if the M6 is rugged enough to withstand that kind of recoil.
Am I looking at replacing the forearm with one that accepts rail attatchements and if so, where is the best place on-line to get such equipment? Low prices appeal to me big time but quality is a must.
Thanks in advance.

I'm with you. I can't imagine spending $300+ for a rail system. Don't get me wrong, if I had the money, I would love one of the ARMS or KAS systems, but until I hit the lotto the cheaper stuff will have to do.
Yankee Hill Machine has a couple of good quality RAS forearms that won't break the bank. One model is a 2 piece system, which means you can just pop off your old handguard and install this one. The others are 1 piece free float, which takes more effort to install. I believe you either have to remove the front sight/gas block or the barrel to install one of these.
Check the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th models on this page: https://secure.valinet.com/~yankeeh/cgi-bin/web_store/web_store.cgi?page=forearms.html&&cart_id=3130795_29709

I all you're doing is mounting an M3 or M6, I'd go with the Fobus/First Samco handguards for about $90.

Here ya go... cheap, easy, works.

I agree. The Fobus handguard set for an M6 is cheap, well made and with a light/laser you're not really worried about absolute zero. They lock in pretty solid too.
You can also mount a vertical foregrip.
Thanks to all. This was just what I was looking for. ;c

This is what I did with one of my earlier ARs -- http://gggaz.com/images/M3Light/M3LightOff.jpg
Worked quite well to be honest. I also had the remote pressure switch for my M3 which eased things a bit. I think a M3 on top or on bottom just looks super cheap and/or tacky; kinda like you are using a "poor man's rifle".
Here's what I did. Less than $20 and solid once I had it bolted on and loc-tite'd.

Go to Brownells (http://www.brownells.com) and punch in item # 276-000-003 .

Yep, the little one is what I used. I mounted it at about the 10 o'clock position so it would be neither on top nor on the bottom.

You could always look at Sidearmor's offering in this area as well. I would think it would maintain zero better than removable handgaurds.

Check it out.
Has anyone tried using the DPMS carry handle tri-mount? I'm looking for an inexpensive way to mount an optic & taclight on a fixed handle AR.

I did what USMSilver did, but mounted it at the 1:00 position. Since I am right-handed, this allows me to keep most of my body behind hard cover and still use the light when shooting from my strong side, which of course I prefer to do if possible.
I don't really care for the forend mounted rail systems, nor do I care for vertical foregrips. I am sometimes forced to work in very close proximity to others, which means I need to keep my muzzle oriented downwards. I use Position Sul for this, and find it difficult to maintain a grip on the vertical foregrip when I do this. Of course, your mileage may vary.

As another possible alternative www.rbprecision.com makes a small dual rail that bolts to the front sight base HERE (http://www.rbprecision.com/id14.htm):

I bought one recently to mount a taclight and sling swivel on my M4 carbine:

The sling swivel came from Sidearmor HERE (http://www.sidearmor.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=12&cat=9&page=1&xid=a570b83eb440ff46ecf4cfe71f4c5b4b)
