View Full Version : Who's got a tactical light on their AR?
Right now I have a M3 mounted on my Bushmaster Sport Utility Rifle, but I'm looking at adding a Surefire eventually. I have an Advanced Armament rail bolted to the handguard, so it's a matter of finding something that goes on a rail. The M3's a great light, but a little small and weak for a rifle.
What does everyone else have?

I've got a Tac-Star mounted on the flutes of my AR pistol.
It's more for a forward handgrip, but it makes a bright light if needed.
I have a surefire m500 on one of my ar15's. Its a pretty nice setup to keep ready for in the home use if need be.

Surefire M900a as of now. Two words describe it all -- IT ROCKS !

I have the M3 light mounted at the 1030ish position on mine.
I have a Surefire forend on one of my 20" HBARs, and I just ordered another one for my M4 carbine. Here's the Surefire on the HBAR:

I'm one of those dysfunctional shooters who can't shoot worth a damn with a vertical foregrip. I wish I could-I'd love to have a 900 series Surefire. Their quick detach throw lever is pretty slick :)
How much did you pay for the M900?

CJan -- kinda curious here...
Mind me asking why you have a "tactical" light on a 20" rifle with a scope on top of the carry handle?
hey bonk, just wondering if atlas joe will let you carry that in your detective mobile?

This rifle is used to dispatch skunks in my wife's tomato garden. The rifle was born out of necessity in 1991. Back then flattops weren't available so I went with an ARMS mount on an A2.
The Surefire was mounted in 1999 or so.
I works so well I don't want to change it :)
At the height of tomato growing season I shoot three or four skunks per month from a distance of 90 meters (+/-). Since I'm shooting skunks they have all been taken at night.

I'm planning on putting a SureFire M500A on my rifle; haven't scraped up the dough yet, though.

Although I'd never admit it in front of my wife....it is ;f
When I shine the light on a skunk they spin around and present their rearend in "spraying" position. The base of the tail makes a perfect point of aim.
Skunks don't stand a chance against Lake City M193 ball. Some of the hits are pretty spectacular.
Over the years we have tried everything to keep them out. The little striped bastards will even dig under the fence that we have buried.

I think I may have to ditch the foregrip etc to go with one. That's for the big lens one with LED's right?
throw the M6 on the side of the rail, and that would be slick.
Where'd ya get it?

I'm cheaper than the rest.;f I only sprung for a barrel mount light as I couldn't justify the cost of a SIR or Surefire foreend. I'd rather buy another AR for that much money. I have a simple Surefire 660 that I bought new for $160 or so. Simple, functional, and upgradeable to a better lamp assy if needed. Mine is for in the house use so the standard lamp assy works just great for me. I love the size and price of this unit. I positioned it the same as the integrated foreends would and seems to work.

Dude, I don't even remember.
Keep an eye on AR-15.com; I've seen them there, off and on, for about $400.
This is what I want

I have the original version Surefire M500A on my Bushmaster 16" flattop. This is the original original ... before navigational LEDs and before the new heat-resistant gray/black plastic. Purchased new in 1998 for $260 ... too good of a deal to pass up.
poor man's set up!

Do they spray at all when hit? I know they stink up the road pretty good when hit by a car.
I've had to take out racoons at night, but never a skunk.

That is the setup that I was looking at, given my lack of funding at the moment.

I'm not sure if they actually spray when they die, but they sure do stink.
I have a bunch of holes just beyond a compost pile near the edge of our property. I bury the dead skunks as soon as possible to keep the smell down.

General rule of thumb around here is that you shoot a skunk twice. Once to break its back, second in the head. works every time. We get them in our coyote traps all the time.
Here is sort of an oddball, an old (circa 1998) Surefire 8X series weaponlight on my Colt M4 carbine:

This one is pretty slick because it can run on lithium batteries or with a rechargeable battery stick. I ran it for years on my Benelli M3 shotgun, but it seems right at home on a carbine :)

What exactly do you have there? Being a "poor man", I'm interested to know what you did.
Viewing the pics did give me some ideas though:cool:

I got a 7 dollars maglite on 2 AA battery duct-taped to my A4 handguard. I like my setup a lot.

I think i've got $85 into this or so. It could be around $60 if you don't use the Z32 Shock-isolated bezel.
http://www.hunt101.com/img/097874.jpg
Parts used:
1. MOUNT: Streamlight M3 mount, mounted thru the handguard. If i had to do this again, i'd go with GG&G's mount, because it's metal. The Streamlight one seems like nylon or plastic, and i suspect might not stand up to multiple removals of the light. ($17; GGG is $25, and found here: http://gggaz.com/products/m3illumrifle.php)
2. RING: 1" weaver ring. I have heard of this done for surefires, but i suspect the Nitrolon bodies are a tad larger than the standard metal ones. I had to use slightly longer screws to get the mount on the flashlight. ($11 at Walmart for 2 rings).
3. Surefire G2 Nitrolon flashlight. ($28 for light; i think another $19 for the shock proof Z32 bezel, and some more $ for the constant on/off tailcap clicker http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=142&t=142231
I highly recommend dealer BrightFlashlights on ar15.com. I've completed 2 deals with him, and he's been very fast, polite, and professional. I bought the above set up initially, was happy with him, and then bought the YHM 4 way rail and a Surefire M962SU06 9v ARMS set up (for SUBSTANTIALLY MORE than my first set up!). I anticipate using the YHM offset mount to bring the light closer to the front grip. I got the new Z48 tailcap, which is pretty cool--light touch, momentary on/off, or a more solid push for the constant on/off.

I use black tape. The color blends itself with the handguard nicely. I like maglight better. I have a much bigger 6 batteries one that I drop from the 4th floor townhome once. The bulb went dead, but the rest was fine. Maglight is considered AK of flashlight.
My cousin has a smaller maglight that takes 2 AA battery welded into his machete blade end near the handle. He uses it for hunting, hiking, or just cleaning the yard. It has been at least 4 years since he did it and the thing is still fine. He can still change the bulb and battery on it because only the midsection of the maglight is welded to the blade.
When you weren't born rich and you got a lot of diffrent hobbies, you'd think up things too.

I have a Surefire M500B on my 16" carbine right now. It is very bright and 100% reliable with either lamp (225 lumen or 500 lumen).
Thinking about buying the 500A assembly to screw in for something lighter and smaller, though. Depends how much it costs.
Two pieces of advice if you're looking to buy something:
1. If you go with Surefire, and you piece it together yourself, make sure the light you get is shock resistant/shock isolated. Their handhelds are not and will not stand up to repeated recoil.
2. Do not waste money on the TACM III. I had one for less than 2 years and it crapped out, despite spending most of its time in the safe. It is a total POS in my not so humble opinion. Surefire is a lot more $$$, but you get what you pay for.
glock-37 GAP, that is frickin' funny as heck! Is that you, or...?
I'll also chime in for the M900a!;f It the one weaponlight that does everything I want.
