I asked once before about Bushmaster M4 style rifles on GT and was told to not get the ones with a Y-comp or AK break. If I get a AR15-E2 with a heavy 16 in. barrel and no break can I legally put a fixed position M4 carbine stock on it? Was wanting a M4 style but do not know how much velocity I would loose with a 14.5 in. barrel. Or would you guys say just get the 14.5 in. barrel M4 style with the break but with the stock I want and live with the break and lower velocity? I will not be using this weapon for long range shooting but would like to be able to engage paper plate size targets out to 250 meters. I also would be putting a ACOG or Leupold VX III 1.5 X 5 scope on it. Are there any thoughts on my concerns?.....Trapfan

Yes. It doesn't matter what barrel you have. You can put a FIXED stock on any rifle.

Not enough to worry about.

I would go without the break. You don't need recoil reduction on an AR, and the increased noise is a pain I'm sure, and you lose a tiny bit of accuracy with a muzzle device.

I'm not positive, but it seems you think that the stock has something to do with the barrel length, sorry if I misunderstood. You can get any stock you want on any rifle, as long as it's fixed. The barrel has to be an overall lenght of 16" on any rifle, no matter what stock you have. Build it how you want, with the break, without the break, standard stock, fixed M4 stock. Mix and match.

With one of those fine optics you listed, you won't have a problem. :)

A safe figure is you lose about 100 FPS per inch of barrel you cut from the 20 inch platform. So 150 FPS will be neglible from 16 to 14.5, until you go out past 300 meters. i have a 20 inch Armalite and a preban shorty 16 inch, and out to 400 I can not tell any difference from POA to POI. At 500 I can tell a huge differnce (both are zeroed with M855 using standard Army 300 meter zero. For what it is worth I find that I shoot the 20 a heckuva lot more since I got it!
Hope this helps

You might even want to check out a snubby stock from bushmaster.Often refered to as a entry stock.

If you want the rifle for "social purposes", get a threaded barrel and have competent 'smith install a cavalry arms brake-silver soldered in place. When the AWB expires, same 'smith can yank it off and install your choice of GI, smith or phantom flash suppresor or your threads. For just plain making noise, the M4 profile barrels handle much better than the HBAR barrels, BUT the HBAR will be a better target barrel because of the weight. It seems that you want a middle to light weight rifle, take a look at the pencil profile barrels, go to ar15.com, look at the equipment exchange link, lots of vendors and deals to be had. The M4 is cut to take a M203, the pencil profile is not stepped, is light all the way forward of the chamber.
